CAMPANHA NO RETURNO DO BRASILEIRÃO

Ainda sim, a equipe paranaense venceu duas partidas no segundo turno.

ENVELHECIMENTO DO ELENCO

Man Utd's "homegrown Osimhen" at Carrington looks like their new Rashford

Spending big money in the transfer market is one way to bring about success in the modern game, but it’s not a guaranteed marker that trophies will follow.

Manchester United have spent upwards of £800m in the last three years alone, but they are currently on a 12-month drought without any form of silverware under Ruben Amorim.

Another option football clubs desperately rely on is their youth systems, with the use of top-level academies often presenting a constant conveyor belt of talent for the future.

The Red Devils have been known for their success in producing elite-level stars, with the Class of ’92’ arguably one of the most iconic groups of prospects to make the jump into the professional game.

One other player has also successfully made the jump and impressed at Old Trafford in recent seasons, after massively impressing through the ranks as a youngster.

Marcus Rashford’s youth record at Man Utd

Many of United’s young prospects join the club at a young age and spend the majority of their youth years as part of the Red Devils’ infamous academy system.

Attacker Marcus Rashford was no different after joining the club at the age of seven and enduring a remarkable rise and progression through the ranks as a youngster.

It’s unclear how many goals he scored before reaching the U18 age group, but he did make himself a household name as he edged towards the end of his scholarship.

The Englishman scored 13 goals for the U18s during the 2015/16 season – sitting at the top of their goalscoring charts until he was handed his first-team debut.

At 18 years and 113 days, Rashford was handed his first start against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League – subsequently taking advantage of the opportunity handed his way.

Despite being a teenager, he netted twice against the Danish outfit in February 2016, which made him an instant hit with the Red Devils’ supporters at Old Trafford.

He’s since racked up over 450 appearances for his boyhood club, but has had to move away on a temporary basis to gain regular football after falling down Amorim’s pecking order.

The United gem who could be their next Rashford

The decision to offload Rashford by Amorim has been one that has been called into question over recent weeks, amid his form on loan at Barcelona from United.

He scored within the first few minutes of the Amorim tenure against Ipswich Town, but it would be one of the few highlights for the forward after a fallout with the 40-year-old.

The 27-year-old has since joined Hansi Flick’s side on loan for the 2025/26 campaign, scoring five times and registering four assists in his 12 outings for the LaLiga outfit.

However, he still has the chance to resurrect his career in the near future, but he could find it tricky to secure his place in the first-team if Chido Obi is handed a chance to thrive.

The 17-year-old generated huge excitement last season with his phenomenal goalscoring record at youth level – with the Dane thriving with valuable minutes at Carrington.

He scored 17 times in just 20 appearances, often featuring for the club’s U18 and U21 sides and helping the former finish second in the youth Premier League.

As a result, he was handed multiple substitute appearances in the first-team setup, registering seven league outings, but only appearing for a total of 160 minutes.

Despite not scoring, Obi was highly praised by many for his performances – leading to one analyst labelling him as a “homegrown Oshimen” – a huge compliment given the Nigerian’s record of 37 goals in 41 appearances throughout 2024/25.

At just 17, it’s crucial that Amorim and various other staff behind the scenes manage the youngster in the right way to help him reach his full potential at the Theatre of Dreams.

However, the similarities to Rashford are there for all to see, given his time in the youth system, but he’s yet to score as early as the Englishman did in the first-team.

At present, the Dane is still 12 months younger than the former academy graduate when he made his first-team bow, showcasing how much time he has to make an impact under Amorim.

However, if Obi can replicate Rashford’s form with the Red Devils, he may have a huge bearing on any success the side manages to achieve in the near future.

Amorim has unlocked the new Bruno Fernandes in "world-class" Man Utd star

Manchester United already have a player on the books who can emulate Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford.

James Bracey leads recovery as battle hangs in the balance

Colin Ingram, Ben Kellaway score unbeaten fifties as Glamorgan look to reel in Gloucestershire

Glamorgan 228 for 4 (Kellaway 55*, Ingram 52*) trail Gloucestershire 380 (Bracey 133, van der Gugten 4-61, Crane 4-89) by 152 runsA day of recoveries, led by James Bracey and later by Glamorgan’s middle order left the Severnside derby in the balance in Cardiff. The Gloucestershire vice-captain continued his brilliant season-turning 57 overnight to 133, passing 6,000 First-Class runs in the process thanks to a 89-run final-wicket partnership with Archie Bailey, rescuing the visitors to 380 after an early morning wobble.A Bailey double-wicket spell restricted Glamorgan after their earlier woes of missing three chances to reduce Gloucestershire’s total before Colin Ingram and Ben Kellaway both passed 50 late in the day to combine for an unbeaten 107-run partnership to close out the day on 228 for 4.After a day of divide on day one, Gloucestershire resumed 279 for 7, Glamorgan having ended the evening breaking the biggest partnership of the innings (96) between Bracey and Zaman Akhter after a period of acceleration.Glamorgan thought they would’ve had the bat in hand within the first half-an-hour of the morning session, Timm van der Gugten dismissing Todd Murphy and Ajeet Singh Dale within the first five overs of the morning. The frustration that followed from Bracey reaching his century, together with Bailey scoring his first runs in First Class cricket in the 20-year-old’s fifth match, brought Gloucestershire to a fighting total despite fears on the previous afternoon of not taking advantage of the Kookaburra ball.A morning spent toiling in the field by a lacklustre Glamorgan can only have blame on themselves. Andy Gorvin dropping Bracey on 87, denying van der Gugten a five-for. James Harris missed a run-out from a scampering two, attempting to protect strike and Chris Cooke missed stumping Bailey in his valuable 56-ball knock. While Glamorgan failed to take their chances, their rivals controlled, the final-wicket partnership bringing back fond memories of a year prior in a last-ball thriller between these two sides at Cheltenham College. Bracey scored a double hundred on that occasion and a final-wicket partnership of 75 made Glamorgan’s pursuit of a target in excess of 500 more improbable. Today, they broke the record for the last wicket against Glamorgan once again. After negating one over before lunch from Singh Dale, the hosts resumed cautiously; battling the early pace and carry in the wicket with the new ball from a formidable England Lions opening pair. While Akhter struggled to hit his mark, Singh Dale was the opposite, bowling with sharp pace, generating more out of the harder ball than any of the Glamorgan bowlers could manage. An opening spell of 1 for 11 from seven overs, including the wicket of an unsettled Zain Ul Hassan piled pressure on after a dominating first session.Asa Tribe got in and looked as though he would continue his strong all-format form with pleasant drives and casual leg glances before fiddling at a ball outside off stump from a second Bailey spell. The youngster’s memorable day continued when Kiran Carlson flicked off his hip directly to fine-leg.Sam Northeast showed typical grit before a bizarre dismissal saw him bowled by van Buuren, taking leg-stump’s bail with a ball turning past his outside edge onto off-stump. Another bowling change working in Cameron Bancroft’s favour. With Glamorgan in bother at 121 for 4 and two relatively new batters at tea, the conditions naturally became easier in the sweltering sunshine. The aging Kookaburra had very few demons allowing for patience to prevail with some destruction and fluent driving later on to give the visitors their turn to toil in the field.

Everton flop "failed a succession of managers", now he's saving Moyes

Everton have enjoyed a solid start to the campaign. Negativity has wended its way in over recent weeks – and understandably so – but few expect the 14th-place Premier League side to slump into the drop zone and remain there.

Of course, neither are David Moyes’ team firing on all cylinders, and after a hard-fought draw at high-flying Sunderland on Monday evening, the issues relating to goals and strikers remained at the forefront.

Perhaps more concerning was the way the Toffees tapered off after the interval, almost knocked out of kilter by Granit Xhaka’s deflected howitzer moments into the second half; the Black Cats were on the hunt for much of the affair thereafter.

Moyes needs to fix these problems and ensure Everton push for an elusive place in the top half. But, in order to do this, he must find solutions to the current problems.

How Moyes can solve Everton's problems

Not to be unduly pragmatic, but the data suggests Everton are headed for a mid-table Premier League finish, settled somewhere on the bottom half of the ladder.

How to dissect the glaring conundrum on Moyes’ desk? Between them, Beto and Thierno Barry have scored one goal in the league this season, and the slew of missed chances are piling up.

Barry will be desperate to break his duck after moving to the Hill Dickinson from Villarreal for a £27m fee in July. A smart deal for a promising attacking talent wrapped up nice and early.

Things need to improve in the final third, with Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish keeping things afloat.

However, Moyes’ job would be a whole lot more unstable were the defenders not playing their part. James Tarkowski has not looked his sharpest so far this term, though Jordan Pickford is as important as ever. An issue down the defensive flanks is as noisy a talking point as the one at number nine.

With Jarrad Branthwaite yet to make his seasonal bow as he recovers from a hamstring injury, the Blues’ secure defence could have crumbled over the past few months, but there’s been an unlikely hero who is keeping Everton away from the maw of the relegation zone.

The Everton flop saving Moyes' skin

Toward the end of the 2024/25 campaign, it looked nailed on that Michael Keane would close the door on his Everton career, drawing to a close a career on Merseyside with many ups and downs.

Keane, 32, penned a new deal at the start of the summer, and that’s a move which has proved incredibly shrewd, for he has started all ten Premier League fixtures so far as Branthwaite recovers.

Once said to have “failed a succession of managers” at Goodison Park by writer Jim Keoghan, Keane looks as sharp and cultured as he ever has, really making a positive impression as the protective tissue in front of Pickford’s goal. Against Sunderland, for example, Liverpool World handed him a 9/10 match rating for his defensive contribution.

Looking at how Keane has fared alongside Tarkowski, you might argue he has been the superior man. Certainly, he has been less error-strewn in his efforts than the vice-captain.

The significance of Keane’s fine form in the rearguard cannot be understated. Branthwaite is indeed sidelined and may yet be uncleared for several months.

Imagine a world in which the Friedkin Group had opted against renewing Keane’s deal, content with the options at hand. It would have been disastrous and to the detriment of Moyes’ first full season back in charge.

Just look at the England international’s display at the Stadium of Light. His fearlessness to make one near-the-line clearance showcased his determination and spirit, and he has been a credit to Moyes’ team this year.

Issues persist at right-back, and while he’s imperfect in the role, Jake O’Brien has proved largely effective in an unnatural berth. Recalling him to central defence alongside Tarkowski might have had an adverse effect on the squad’s fluency, not least because of the lack of options in the position.

Would it be too much to claim Keane has been the signing of the summer for the Toffees? Perhaps not, considering the circumstances. His steely displays in front of Pickford’s goal might even be keeping Moyes in a job as he looks to find a successful formula to stave off any worries of yet another relegation-threatened campaign.

Embora a campanha do São Paulo seja ‘mediana’ no Campeonato Brasileiro, Dorival Júnior levou o Tricolor à conquista inédita da Copa do Brasil.
