BCB puts its constitution reform committee on ice

Decision comes in the face of Dhaka clubs protesting an unconfirmed move by the committee to reduce the number of board directors nominated by the Dhaka league

Mohammad Isam25-Jan-2025The BCB has put its constitution reform committee on ice in the face of an ongoing boycott by the Dhaka clubs. The city’s second-tier competition, the Dhaka First Division Cricket League, has been suspended since January 14 with the clubs refusing to play.Their protests stem from reports that the BCB’s constitution reform committee submitted a resolution to reduce the number of BCB directors nominated by the Dhaka league from 12 to four. There has been no formal announcement, by the BCB or the committee in question, of such a move. It would require a change in the BCB’s constitution to do this, and it would need to be approved at the board’s annual general meeting.Either way, the BCB announced on Saturday that it is going to take a look at the committee’s scope of work and terms of reference.”The board decided to postpone the constitution review committee’s activities,” BCB director Mahbubul Anam said. “This committee could be changed or expanded at a later time. The rest of the activities will take place only after their scope of work and terms of reference are prepared. The terms of reference will be on how they will make the necessary changes to the constitution, how they will do it by involving stakeholders.”Anam said that the reports of the committee submitting any resolution were unsubstantiated. “They never submitted any proposed changes to the board president or anyone in the board. We have also heard that they didn’t submit anything to the National Sports Council. Many of the changes spoken about isn’t also correct. However, he said, the BCB wants the whole process to be more transparent. “The BCB directors feel that the process has to be clearer. There’s no secrecy about the constitution. It is a public information. We want to suspend their activities to stop such discussions. The board feels that stakeholders must be involved so we need change and expansion.”The BCB also announced the names of the board directors who will lead 21 out of its 23 standing committees.Nazmul Abedin Fahim was announced as the head of the men’s cricket operations committee and the women’s wing. Fahim had threatened to resign from the BCB’s board of directors after a rift with BCB president Faruque Ahmed, centred around Nazmul wanting to head these two committees.Faruque himself has been named chair of the board’s marketing committee. Akram Khan, Mahbubul Anam and Fahim Sinha have also got roles as chair of various committees. The BCB has instructed the various newly appointed chairs to form full committees for each of their posts over the next two weeks. The heads of the BCB’s working committee and security committee will be named later.

Cummins 'heavily unlikely' for Champions Trophy, Smith or Head to lead Australia

Coach Andrew McDonald says Josh Hazlewood is also struggling to be fit for the tournament

Alex Malcolm05-Feb-2025Australia captain Pat Cummins is “heavily unlikely” for the Champions Trophy because of his ankle issue. Steven Smith and Travis Head are in the frame to captain, while Josh Hazlewood is also battling to make it on time, according to coach Andrew McDonald.Cummins missed the Test tour of Sri Lanka due to the birth of his second child, but he has also been nursing the ankle issue that had flared up after a heavy workload in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Australia’s ODI players, who are not on the Test tour, are due to fly out to Sri Lanka on Thursday but McDonald revealed on Wednesday morning that Cummins was unlikely to be among them.Related

  • Cummins, Hazlewood included for Champions Trophy

  • Mitchell Marsh out of Champions Trophy with back injury

“Pat Cummins hasn’t been able to resume any type of bowling so he’s heavily unlikely, so that would mean that we do need a captain,” McDonald told . “Steve Smith and Travis Head are the two that we’ve been having conversations with while we’ve been building out that Champions Trophy team along with Pat back home. They’ll be the two that we look at for that leadership post.”They’re the two obvious ones. Steve has done a great job here in the [first] Test match. He’s done some good work in one-day international cricket across the journey as well. So it’s between those two.”But, as I said, Patty is hugely unlikely, which is a bit of shame, and we’ve also got Josh Hazlewood, who is battling [to be fit] at the moment. So that medical information will land over the next couple of days and we’ll be able to shore that up and let everyone know the direction.”Hazlewood is understood to be dealing with a hip issue after recovering from the side and calf injuries that saw him miss three of the five Tests against India and the Test tour of Sri Lanka.Mitchell Marsh has already been ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to a back injury. He is unlikely to play the remainder of the domestic season but there is a possibility he could still play in the IPL for Lucknow Super Giants.Australia have yet to name a replacement for Marsh for the Champions Trophy. McDonald confirmed on Sunday after the Test win in Galle that Beau Webster was a chance to be called into the ODI squad despite not yet having played ODI cricket for Australia, given the desire to add another seam-bowling allrounder in the mix. Australia have Aaron Hardie and Marcus Stoinis in the squad already but both have injury concerns. Hardie has only just returned to bowling after a summer plagued by quad problems while Stoinis suffered some hamstring tightness recently while playing in the SA20 and did not bowl in his last match for Durban’s Super Giants.Beau Webster made a memorable Test debut recently, and could get into the ODI squad as well•Getty Images

The absence of Cummins and Hazlewood will open the door for Sean Abbott to return to the ODI frame after missing selection for the final Champions Trophy squad due to his recent ODI form. Spencer Johnson will also come into the mix as he was set to fly to Sri Lanka as cover for the ODI squad.Legspinner Tanveer Sangha has been flown to Sri Lanka ahead of the second Test for development purposes but McDonald confirmed he could play a part in the two ODIs in Colombo before the team flies to the Champions Trophy. Sangha appears likely to be a reserve player in Pakistan, as he was for the ODI World Cup in India in 2023, given Australia only have one specialist spinner in Adam Zampa in their 15.Australia’s selectors will have a challenge cobbling an XI together for the first ODI against Sri Lanka on February 12 given there is only one travel day scheduled between the fifth day of the second Test and the first ODI, with ODI squad members Head, Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc all set to play in the Test match. But there may be extra days to recover if the Test ends quickly on a surface that already appears much drier than the previous one.

Kusal, Nissanka easily dispatch Bangladesh in T20I series opener

But it was the SL bowling that laid the groundwork with Shanaka and Vandersay applying the squeeze

Andrew Fidel Fernando10-Jul-2025Sri Lanka 159 for 3 (Kusal 73, Nissanka 42) beat Bangladesh 154 for 5 (Emon 38, Theekshana 2-37) by seven wicketsKusal Mendis smote another half century, Pathum Nissanka crashed a 16-ball 42, and Sri Lanka made light work of a target of 155, strolling home at the end of the 19th over.It was the Sri Lanka bowling that laid the groundwork though, with Dasun Shanaka plying shorter lengths to concede only 22 from his four overs, while Jeffrey Vandersay also kept a lid on the scoring. Bangladesh might wonder if they were not ambitious enough, having lost only five wickets in their innings.Their total always seemed light, but when Sri Lanka thumped 78 runs in the first five overs, losing only a wicket in that period, it felt even more meagre. With Kusal and Nissanka having provided that early explosion, the other batters did not have to strain themselves to prod Sri Lnaka home.

Six boundaries in a row

That entire Kusal-Nissanka opening stand was box office, as they ransacked 78 runs off 28 balls together. But there was one sequence that was utterly unmissable, as they racked up 30 off six balls, between overs 2.4 and 3.3.The first three balls were Tanzim Hasan bowling to Nissanka, who smoked the bowler over cow corner, spanked him over cover, and got a lucky inside edge past the stumps in between. The next three balls were Taskin Ahmed to Mendis, who launched him over the cover boundary, slapped a four behind square on the offside, then in perhaps the shot of the tour, slog-swept Taskin over deep square leg for six. There were other spectacular bursts of hitting in that partnership too – Nissanka starting the chase off with three consecutive fours was especially memorable. At the end of this stand, Nissanka had struck at 263, and Mendis at 233.

Bangladesh slow through the middle overs

At the end of the seventh over Bangladesh were 57 for 1. At the end of the 17th, they were 122 for 4. Which means that in 60-ball stretch they scored only 65 runs, despite their batters being at the crease throughout. This is perhaps where that innings lost its way, with captain Litton Das making six from 11, and Towhid Hridoy hitting 10 off 13.No. 5 batter Mohammad Naim also struggled, despite being at the crease for more than 11 overs and finishing not out. He made 32 off 29.

Emon, Shamim try to shock Bangladesh to life

The only batters who brought serious urgency to the innings were Parvez Hossain Emon and Shamim Hossain. Emon crashed five fours and a six over midwicket in his 38 off 22 balls, even as opening partner Tanzid Hasan was struggling at the other end.Later, Shamim hit two sixes in his five-ball stay, the reverse-swept six off Theekshana in the 19th over a particular highlight. He also took an outstanding overhead catch running back from short cover, to end Kusal’s innings.

Cummins to sit out white-ball matches against South Africa

Hazlewood and Johnson to miss T20Is against West Indies; Bartlett and Fraser-McGurk named replacements

Andrew McGlashan12-Jul-2025Pat Cummins is set to sit out the white-ball matches against South Africa next month as part of his build-up towards the Ashes later in the year.Cummins had already been rested for the five-match T20I series against West Indies along with Mitchell Starc and Travis Head. Now Josh Hazlewood has been added to those returning home after the Test series, having originally been included in the squad, with Xavier Bartlett named his replacement. While Hazlewood will feature against South Africa in the Top End during August – a tour which includes three T20Is and three ODIs across Darwin, Cairns and Mackay – Cummins will move into a period of fitness work ahead of the home summer.Related

He is eyeing being involved in a short T20I tour to New Zealand in early October and some of the limited-overs matches against India ahead of the Ashes in late November. There is also the potential of a Sheffield Shield match for New South Wales, which he didn’t do last season before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.”I’ll have a good training block for the next couple of months, six weeks or so,” Cummins told reporters at Sabina Park. “Probably not bowling, but lots of gym work. [My] body feels pretty good, but there’s always little bits and pieces you’re always trying to get right and then build up for the summer. So it’ll probably look like white-ball [cricket]…we’ve got some [matches against] New Zealand, India, potentially a Shield game and then into the home summer.”Cummins remains Australia’s ODI captain but has only led them twice in the format since the 2023 World Cup final. He missed the Champions Trophy earlier this year due to an ankle problem he managed during the Tests series against India. The early stages of next season’s Sheffield Shield are shaping as key for Australia’s Ashes plans amid the continued search for a settled top order. Sam Konstas will have two more innings to make a mark in the West Indies and Usman Khawaja two more to settle the talk around his form. Cameron Green, meanwhile, will be looking to build on the second-innings half-century in Grenada.Attention will then turn to how those players perform ahead of England’s arrival. Green is part of the T20I squad in the West Indies and will likely feature against South Africa before focus shifts to a potential return to bowling. Konstas is expected to be part of the four-day matches on the Australia A tour of India in September, but Khawaja is unlikely to play again until the domestic season starts for Queensland.”There’s a lot of Shield cricket to come and some Aussie A stuff as well,” Cummins said on the significance of the final Test in the West Indies. “I think [if] you do well at Test level, any time it’s going to kind of make your case more compelling. I think there’s a bit of a connection to the summer, but it feels a long way away at the moment.”Xavier Bartlett picked up 18 wickets in 11 innings in MLC•MLC

Meanwhile, Bartlett, who holds a Cricket Australia contract, will get the opportunity to build on his impressive early T20I record of 11 wickets at 14.72 from seven matches. He will arrive in the Caribbean after a productive MLC campaign for San Francisco Unicorns which, as of Friday, put him as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.He has been joined as a late call-up by Jake Fraser-McGurk, who has replaced left-arm quick Spencer Johnson with the selectors altering the balance of the squad. Johnson is nursing back soreness that he picked up during the IPL. Fraser-McGurk, who played alongside Bartlett at Unicorns in MLC, started the tournament strongly but finished with four single-figure scores in five innings. He has made 113 runs in seven T20Is with a top score of 50 against Scotland last year. He was dropped by Delhi Capitals during this year’s IPL where he averaged 9.16, which came after a lean BBL for Melbourne Renegades that produced 188 runs at 18.80, 95 of which came in the last match of the season against Brisbane Heat. The T20I series against West Indies starts on July 20 with two matches at Sabina Park before the final three are played in St Kitts.

Motie, Hope and Pretorius combine to keep Royals winless

The win helped Amazon Warriors get their campaign back on track after two losses in a row

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Sep-2025Barbados Royals continued their winless run in CPL 2025, sliding to their fourth defeat in five games thanks to Shai Hope and Dwaine Pretorius in the main, as Guyana Amazon Warriors bounced back from successive losses to register their third win in five games in a rain-hit contest in Bridgetown.Asked to bat at home, Royals didn’t have a great start, losing Quinton de Kock in the fourth over and Kadeem Alleyne in the seventh, but Brandon King ensured they had a decent powerplay on the whole, reaching 43. But he was gone by the eighth over for a 27-ball 39, and then it was over to Rassie van der Dussen to keep things on course with Eathan Bosch and Sherfane Rutherford following King back to the dugout quickly.Royals needed a partnership, and got it from van der Dussen and captain Rovman Powell.

Van der Dussen, unfortunately, could never quite speed up, finishing with a 37-ball 45, but Powell did, smashing an unbeaten 28-ball 50 with six sixes, which pushed Royals to a competitive 165. Gudakesh Motie, with the wickets of Alleyne and Bosch, was the standout Amazon Warriors bowler, returning 2 for 16 from his four overs.Amazon Warriors’ chase started terribly, raising fears of a third successive loss, as they slid to 30 for 4 inside the fifth over. Ben McDermott, Moeen Ali, Shimron Hetmyer and Hassan Khan were all gone, Bosch and Ramon Simmonds picking up two wickets apiece at the start. But that’s where Royals’ fight ended. Hope, who had opened the innings, was still there, and Pretorius joined ranks with him from No. 6, and the two put on an 89-run stand in 60 balls amid the rain – which was a near-constant presence – to put Amazon Warriors on top. They were separated when Pretorius fell for a 34-ball 53 to Chris Green, and the target was still some distance away with the scoreboard reading 119 for 5. Hope and Quentin Sampson ensured that there were no further hiccups, getting to the target with a six and with two balls remaining.

Perry, Schutt inspire Birmingham Phoenix in low-scoring grind

Manchester Originals miss chance to close gap on table-toppers as they slump to 16-run loss

ECB Media24-Aug-2025Manchester Originals missed the chance to take a big leap towards qualifying for The Hundred Eliminator next Saturday after falling to a 16-run defeat to lowly Birmingham Phoenix at Emirates Old Trafford and slipping out of the top three. The Originals, who have never progressed beyond the group phase of the women’s competition, looked strong favourites after restricting the visitors to 111 for 3 but Aussie seamer Megan Schutt (3 for 14) spearheaded an inspired performance with the ball after Ellyse Perry’s second successive half-century and a sparky knock from Sterre Kalis had given them something to defend. Both Originals openers were dismissed for ducks, Kathyrn Bryce run out by Emma Lamb and Beth Mooney falling to a superb running catch by Marie Kelly off Schutt, before Em Arlott snared Alice Monaghan to leave the hosts 14 for 3.That became 14 for 4 two balls later when 19-year-old off-spinner Phoebe Brett had Amelia Kerr caught at mid-on by Arlott. Deandra Dottin and Seren Smale steadied the ship somewhat before Hannah Baker snared the former, caught at long-off as she tried to up the ante.Smale dug deep for her 34-ball 29, eventually caught at short fine-leg by Brett to give Schutt her third wicket, and Lauren Filer struck three boundaries in her unbeaten 19, but the Originals were eventually dismissed for 95 from the final ball of their innings.Earlier, Phoenix skipper Perry had chosen to bat after winning the toss but her team were soon in trouble, Georgia Voll falling for a four-ball duck after picking out Monaghan at deep square-leg off Mahika Gaur. The Originals’ high-class bowling attack was relentless, the visitors crawling to 15 in 24 balls when Lamb offered a simple chance to Dottin off Sophie Ecclestone before Amy Jones succumbed to Dottin to leave the score 17 for 3.Perry (55 not out from 48) and Kalis mounted a rescue operation, the Aussie legend reaching her half-century by dispatching Bryce for six over mid-wicket and Kalis unbeaten on 43 from 39 when the innings concluded on 111 for 3.It didn’t look like being enough against an Originals side which had won their three previous matches but Phoenix prevailed to move up to seventh in the table and push their opponents down to fourth, behind London Spirit on net run rate. The Originals now face a crucial final group match against Northern Superchargers on Tuesday, with the Spirit visiting Oval Invincibles tomorrow.Kalis, the Meerkat Match Hero, said: “It was obviously a tough start; the pitch was doing quite a bit. When I got in, it was a tough situation because we’d lost some early wickets. But Perry and I rebuilt, and I thought it was a good score on that pitch. It was definitely the kind of surface where, once you got in, it became a bit easier to score.”In the end, it was a brilliant win. We had to play really good cricket to defend a low-ish total, and we knew early wickets were going to be key and we got them. Obviously it’s been a bit of a tough campaign for us but what we can do now is play our best cricket and today, we showed what kind of team we are. It was a brilliant effort.”

Liverpool youngster Chirivella shipped out on loan

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool youngster Pedro Chirivella has completed a loan move to Spanish club Extremadura UD, per the club’s official website.

What’s the word?

Chirivella, a central midfielder, has been a key part of Liverpool’s Under-23 side this season, making 14 appearances in Premier League 2. He has scored one goal and provided two assists across those games.

The 21-year-old has made five appearances for the Reds’ senior squad, once in 2015 – in a Europa League game against Bordeaux – and four times in 2016, against Swansea in the Premier League and Exeter City (twice) and West Ham in the FA Cup.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

He has failed to play for Jurgen Klopp’s team in the past two seasons, however, and will spend the rest of this term in Spain’s second-tier.

Not good enough

It does not appear that Chirivella is good enough to play for Liverpool. He will be heading back to Spain after initially moving to the Reds from Valencia in 2013.

The midfielder has taken in loan spells at Go Ahead Eagles and Willem in the Netherlands, and has won nine caps for Spain at Under-17 level.

However, he has failed to kick on and, at the age of 21, it appears that time is running out for him to make a good on the potential the Reds initially saw in him.

The loan move though, should at least help raise the youngster’s value. With his contract due to expire in 18 months, the ideal scenario would surely be for Chirivella to impress enough at Extremadura to attract a permanent bid during the next transfer window.

Leeds fans are unhappy with Barry Douglas form

[ad_pod ]

Barry Douglas was outstanding for Wolverhampton Wanderers last season and there was a lot of excitement when Leeds United were able to sign him in the summer.

The 29-year-old has found it difficult to show his best form for the Whites this season, however, and the Leeds fans have decided to let him know about it.

Douglas did register his fourth Championship assist of the season against Norwich City at the weekend, but could not prevent his side from suffering a 3-1 loss.

The 5ft 10in ace was actually a half-time substitute against the Canaries, having been on the sidelines in recent weeks through injury.

On Monday, Leeds’ official Twitter account drew attention to the fact that Douglas had contributed an assist against Norwich.

However, it would be fair to say that the social media post did not go down very well with United fans, who have criticised the Scot.

Indeed, a number have claimed that they have been disappointed with what they have seen from Douglas throughout the 2018-19 campaign.

Why Chelsea v Manchester United is a must-win for both as the magic of the cup takes hold

[ad_pod ]

Between them Chelsea and Manchester United have won seven of the last fifteen FA Cups, an impressive duopoly that amounts to a modern-day strangle-hold on the tournament.

It is a mutual cup pedigree made all the more astounding by the fact that every single triumph was overseen by a different manager and this suggests no matter who is in charge there is something in the psychological make-up of both clubs that highly values a trip to Wembley in May.

It shouldn’t be forgotten too that for the last two years Chelsea and United have taken it in turns to be the losing finalists and while the doom-mongers insist that the cherished competition has lost its allure among the big boys this particular duo can hold their heads up high.

Of those seven gloried afternoons some were viewed as significant bonuses to round off successful seasons while others were more substantially welcomed, adding a silver gloss, even purpose to an otherwise disappointing campaign. There is no question that should either team go all of the way this time out the achievement will fall into the latter category.

It would matter greatly to Maurizio Sarri or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – to Chelsea or United – to lift the cup in three months’ time as it will potentially redeem and restore a troublesome 2018/19.  It will not have escaped their notice either that elsewhere across the ties only Manchester City remain as an intimidating obstacle.

How perfect then that the fifth round has pitted these desperate foes against one another in a fiery showdown at the Bridge this Monday and determining who needs progress more is easy at first glance but trickier when you dig a little deeper.

At face value it is Chelsea and Sarri surely who are in urgent need of a boost at present and who knows, with the right wind perhaps a trophy come the season’s end. After all it is they who were trounced beyond recognition last weekend at the Etihad Stadium, a comprehensive and mortifying loss that followed a recent 4-0 thumping at Bournemouth and with the meagre accruement of just seven league points this year, it is they who languish in genuine crisis.

Right now the implementation of Sarri-ball in England is a busted flush and worse yet it is being executed poorly by a set of players who have shown time and again that if there is an excuse to hide behind they will take it. It should be of huge concern too that the woeful performances have led to the Blues slipping outside of the top four.

What the nicotined Neapolitan wouldn’t give then for a rousing response from his side on Monday and a further three cup wins thereafter. A trophy (to possibly add to a Caribao Cup for an ultimately positive domestic double) would not only silence his critics but crucially offer him time and a summer transfer window to correct the glitches in his meticulous matrix. It would end an annus horribilis in hope.

As for the visitors the initial interpretation of how important Monday’s game is for them plays it down in comparison to their other ventures. An immediate resurgence of form and results under Solksjaer following the acrimonious sacking of Mourinho has seen the Red Devils claw back a long-standing deficit and become front-runners for a Champions League spot. It is surely that which they must maintain going forward at all costs, with a cup jaunt only proving a distraction they could well do without.

Perhaps. But then again, that ignores Tuesday’s loss to PSG which, when taken in isolation is hardly a disaster for United given the full circumstances. When coupled with a further cup defeat to Chelsea just six days later however it amounts to back-to-back failure that stymies the momentum so far accrued under the Norwegian. And it should not be under-estimated how vital a role momentum has played in turning United’s fortunes around.

Solskjaer then will be extremely keen to immediately right the wrongs that set in at Old Trafford this week and not risk losing the belief and optimism he has smiled so hard to attain. Furthermore, as an alumni of the Sir Alex Ferguson school of thinking he will view the FA Cup as a realistic route to glory, one it would be unprofessional to not go all-out for.

On a personal level the 45-year-old will be acutely aware too of the cup’s importance in helping him possibly secure his dream job on a permanent basis. Manchester United surely view a top four finish and a progression past the Champion’s League group stage as the base requirement for any given season and one has been achieved with the other now a viable target. A trophy though, won in an interim capacity after rescuing the club from calamity: how much would that assist his cause?

Determining who most needs a win this Monday night results in a score draw for both managers and both clubs. And with losing not an option you can forget about the possible upsets and fairy-tale quarter-finalists. It’s at Stamford Bridge where the real magic of the cup casts its unmissable spell.

Tottenham fans desperate for new Toby Alderweireld deal

[ad_pod ]

Toby Alderweireld’s future is an interesting one.

The centre-back is now very much back in favour at Tottenham Hotspur, having played 34 times in all competitions for the club this season.

Alderweireld’s current contract with Tottenham will expire at the end of the 2019-2020 campaign, though.

What’s more, teams will be able to sign the Belgian for £25m this summer due to a clause in his current deal.

At that price, Alderweireld – a 2015 arrival from Atletico Madrid – will not be short of suitors.

There is still obviously a chance that the defender could pen a fresh deal with Tottenham, however, which would remove the release clause.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

And that is exactly what the Spurs supporters want to happen.

Alderweireld is one of the best central defenders in European football and losing the 29-year-old in this summer’s transfer window really would be a big blow.
