The Blaze boss powerplays to end Surrey's unbeaten start

Cassidy McCarthy, Kirstie Gordon douse flames of a previously unstoppable host batting line-up

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay11-Jun-2025The Blaze 169 for 9 (Elwiss 61, Kelly 46) beat Surrey 152 (Wyatt-Hodge 60, Gordon 3-35) by 17 runsPowerplay heroics with bat and ball from The Blaze helped end host Surrey’s unbeaten start to the 2025 Vitality Blast women’s competition.Cassidy McCarthy and Kirstie Gordon doused the flames of the previous unstoppable host batting line-up, reducing them to 1 for 3 in pursuit of 170 to win.Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s blistering 60 from 33 balls, including three sixes and seven fours, briefly raised home hopes but they were bowled out in the last over 17 runs short.Earlier, Georgia Elwiss (61 from 46) and Marie Kelly (46 from 29) shared an opening stand of 92 in 57 balls and despite a collapse in which Tash Farrant and Grace Harris got two wickets apiece, their total of 169 proved more than enough.Ryana MacDonald-Gay’s five wides in the opening over gave The Blaze early impetus on which they were quick to build.Kelly was the first aggressor, clearing the ropes off first Farrant and then Tilly Corteen-Coleman. Elwiss then drove and swept Kalea Moore for three successive fours as the visitors reached 63 for nought at the end of the powerplay.A lofted drive and a streaky edge for four by Kelly kept up the pressure, but with a 50 in sight, poor calling left her stranded at the same end as Elwiss. From there, wickets tumbled. In-form Kathryn Brice lofted Corteen-Coleman to Harris at mid-off, the first time she’d been dismissed in the tournament, and her sister Sarah made only 1 before nicking MacDonald-Gay through to Kira Chathli.A suicidal second run saw the end of Heather Graham and neither Ella Claridge or Michaela Kirk stayed long.Elwiss, who’d surveyed the slide from the other end, reached 50 from 40 balls, but after she lobbed a catch to short third, only a few late blows from Josie Groves got The Blaze to 169.Surrey made the worst possible start losing skipper Bryony Smith for nought, part of a wicket-maiden for McCarthy.Chathli also went without scoring courtesy of a fabulous running catch by Kirk and when in-form Paige Schofield was bowled first ball for nought by Gordon Surrey were 1 for 3.Phoebe Franklin blocked out Gordon’s hat-trick ball, but would have been run out soon afterwards were it not for a wild throw with both batters at the same end. Reprieved, Franklin swept Gordon for six, while Wyatt-Hodge caressed one through the covers as a 50-stand came up in 39 balls. The England opener cleared the ropes at midwicket and again behind square to race to 50 in 27 balls, but Groves bowled Franklin to end the stand at 69.When Wyatt-Hodge’s bold effort was ended by McCarthy’s sharp catch at backward point, hopes rested on big-hitting Harris for a late rescue act.The powerful Australian hit Groves back over her head for six, but perished later in the over trying to repeat the shot and despite some brief fireworks from Macdonald-Gay, Surrey were destined to fall short.

Alisson, Milinkovic-Savic & 15 summer transfer targets from Serie A this summer

With the summer window set to open in just three months, Goal looks at the players presently attracting the most attention in Italy's top flight

  • Elsa

    1Alisson (Roma)

After being forced to play second fiddle to Wojciech Szczesny at Roma last season, Alisson has spent the current campaign showing just why was never usurped as Brazil's No.1 by Ederson despite the lack of game time in 2016-17.

The 25-year-old has been labelled "the Messi of goalkeepers" by former Giallorossi coach Roberto Negrisolo and there are plenty of top teams across Europe who believe Alisson to be something truly special.

Liverpool recently pulled out of a £62 million deal for the Selecao shot-stopper but, given Roma's annual need to cash in on its best players in order to meet FFP regulations, it is highly likely that Alisson will be on the move this summer regardless.

  • Getty Images

    2Felipe Anderson (Lazio)

A former target for Manchester United, Felipe Anderson was regarded as one of the best players in Serie A after an excellent second season at the Stadio Olimpico. Three years on, though, the Brazilian is struggling for consistency.

However, he has not been helped by playing in a variety of roles, including wing-back, while he missed the start of the current campaign with a torn abductor muscle.

There have been encouraging signs of late, though, and Lazio would certainly be open to offers for a player who is not a guaranteed starter and has also recently clashed with coach Simone Inzaghi.

  • Getty Images

    3Andrea Belotti (Torino)

After a sensational 2016-17 season, Andrea Belotti looked certain to leave Torino last summer. However, Granata president Urbano Cairo insisted that the striker would only depart if a foreign club met the €100 million buy-out clause in his contract.

Milan did their best to land Belotti but they were, unsurprisingly, unable to reach an agreement with Cairo, who was dead against selling his most prized possession to a Serie A rival. Torino's stance has softened, and the asking price fallen, given Belotti has netted just five times in Serie A this season.

Indeed, the 24-year-old remains an attractive proposition for any top side looking for an all-round attacker, as his struggles this season have more to do with a minor but nagging knee injury and Torino's poor form, rather than a lack of talent on his part.

    4Stefan de Vrij (Lazio)

The biggest bargain of the summer, Stefan de Vrij is available on a free transfer as his contract with Lazio expires at the end of June. The Dutch defender has been brilliant for the Biancocelesti since arriving from Feyenoord in the 2014 for approximately €7m.

In the current climate, he is now worth at least six times that amount, having established himself as one of the best centre-halves in Serie A. Lazio fought desperately to persuade him to stay at the Stadio Olimpico – or at the very least agree to a new contract with a low buy-out clause – but the two parties were unable to broker a deal.

As a result, De Vrij is now set to depart, with Inter his most likely destination, though several other clubs, including Juventus, are interested.

Salah, Aubameyang and Premier League Team of the Season so far

As the Premier League enters the busy Christmas period, we take a look at the best individual performers during the first half of the season

  • Alisson | Liverpool

The most commanding goalkeeper in the Premier League this season and one of the best impact signings made in Premier League history. It’s a close-run thing between Alisson and his Brazilian colleague Ederson at Manchester City. They are practically neck-and-neck in terms of their out-and-out goalkeeping skills as well as having the ball at their feet. However Alisson shines when it comes to clean sheets and goals conceded. He may have been expensive but is one of the big reasons behind Liverpool’s surge to the top of the table.

  • Getty Images

    Cesar Azpilicueta | Chelsea

His standout performance of the campaign came against Manchester City, when Chelsea snapped Pep Guardiola’s long unbeaten run. He is a long-time Stamford Bridge favourite and has made the switch back to right-back with minimal fuss under Maurizio Sarri having played centre-back under Antonio Conte. Azpilicueta is one of only 10 outfield players to have featured in every minute of this Premier League campaign so far.

  • Getty Images

    Virgil van Dijk | Liverpool

Last season Jurgen Klopp opted to take no signings over the wrong one, delaying Liverpool’s pursuit for a centre-back until January when they knew they’d have another chance at making Virgil van Dijk the world’s most expensive defender. It’s paid off in a big way. Van Dijk has along the way become arguably the best defender in the world on form this year, helping Liverpool to the top of the league with his command of the back four.

    Aymeric Laporte | Manchester City

Like Van Dijk, Laporte is another January recruit who has become absolutely integral in the way that his side plays. Guardiola’s preference for a left-footed centre-back has seen Laporte deployed as a key component in how Manchester City set about creating chances. He is ready-made for English football due to his strength and physique. Furthermore, no player in the Premier League has won more matches or played more passes to this point than the French centre-back.

'The one and only Joel Matip!' – Why Liverpool loves its goalscoring, dribbling, social-media superstar

In six years at Anfield, Matip has won everything there is to win – including the hearts of Reds fans and teammates

There could hardly have been a more popular match-winner. As the Kop roared and as Jurgen Klopp punched the air on the sideline, Liverpool’s players mobbed their hero.

“The one and only Joel Matip!” as Virgil van Dijk put it afterwards.

He’s already a firm favourite with supporters, and even more so now, after his 89th-minute header secured a tense, hard-fought 2-1 win over Ajax in the Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Given the way the Reds’ season has started, it could well prove to be the most important goal Matip has scored for the club.

In any case, it all adds to the legend. Teammates and fans love him, and no wonder.

They have plenty of reasons to…

  • Getty

He was Klopp's first major signing…

Klopp had only been at Anfield a couple of months when he instructed the club’s recruitment team to go after Matip, who was coming to the end of his contract with Schalke.

Liverpool’s defence at that point was built around inconsistent and/or ageing performers such as Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure, but Klopp knew that Matip, whom he had come up against plenty of times while manager of Borussia Dortmund, would bring poise and class, and that his presence would help imprint the manager’s style on the team.

    He wasn’t wrong.

  • Getty

    He didn't cost a penny…

What makes the Matip deal even better is that it didn’t cost Liverpool a penny, in terms of a transfer fee.

The Reds saw off plenty of competition to land their man, Matip signing a four-year deal in February 2016 before arriving on Merseyside that summer.

He would make 32 appearances in his first season at Anfield, and has since racked up a total of 171.

    Decent value, you’d say.

  • Getty

    He scores goals…

Matip’s header against Ajax took him into double figures in terms of goals scored for Liverpool, and means he has scored at least once in each of his seven seasons with the club. Only Roberto Firmino, of the current team, has matched him.

His first Reds strike came in a 4-2 win at Crystal Palace in October 2016, a trademark header from a Philippe Coutinho corner.

But he scores with his feet too, evidenced at West Ham in 2017, or in wins against Leeds and Aston Villa last season.

  • Getty

    He assists them too…

Officially, Matip has registered six assists for Liverpool, but it’s his first one that will always live longest in the memory.

You know which one we’re talking about, right? Divock Origi may be the hero of the Reds’ 2019 Champions League triumph, but it was Matip who laid the ball off for the Belgian to secure victory over Tottenham at Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

    'More Women in Football'.

It's a simple message that we can all get behind – and it was little surprise when our first run of these tote bags sold in double-quick time. They're back in stock – for now – though, with all profits in March going to support Her Game Too, who are working to stamp out sexism in football.

Fortunately, we've got another batch in, and that's the only thing you can find on the INDIVISA store. We're also stocking the away shirt of Victoria Park Vixens – your new favourite grassroots team.

Watch this space. There's more to come, don't worry.

  • Covering everything from GRASSROOTS to the ELITE game

INDIVISA has a wholly-democratic approach to the beautiful game. As much as we love huge players, historic clubs and showpiece tournaments, we also recognise importance of the grassroots game.

As well as supporting the Vixens, the site is also committed to bringing you stories from the bottom of the footballing pyramid.

This week grassroots legend and football writer Emma Tobiasson explained how Tumblr – commiserations if you're too young to remember that corner of the internet – helped satisfy her women's football obsession at a time when the sport received minimal coverage.

And this month, we've focussed on Central Africa, telling the tale of La Ligue D'Egalite. 'The equality league' was set up in Cameroon back in 2017 and is supported by La Liga. It has been a roaring success so far, having a dramatic effect on women's football participation in the country.

Barcelona ratings: Frenkie de Jong masterclass helps Xavi's side beat Real Madrid to all-but seal La Liga title

Barcelona came from behind to beat Real Madrid 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday, likely sealing a first league title under Xavi.

Barcelona probably only needed one point here. Instead, they got three. Sergi Roberto grabbed the first goal, and Franck Kessie slotted home a late winner to see off Real Madrid and establish a 12-point lead atop La Liga.

Real Madrid went ahead much against the run of play, with Vinicius Jr's speculative cross deflecting into the net off Ronald Araujo's head.

Barcelona grabbed an equaliser on the stroke of half-time, with Sergi Roberto capitalising on a series of deflections before curling the ball home from ten yards out.

And they found a late winner, with Alejandro Balde feeding Kessie at the far post for an easy finish in second-half stoppage time.

GOAL rates Barcelona's players from Camp Nou…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Marc-Andre ter Stegen (6/10):

Entirely wrong-footed by Madrid's opener after a nasty deflection.

    Ronald Araujo (6/10):

Unfortunate to concede an own goal. Was otherwise reliable against Vinicius.

    Jules Kounde (7/10):

Defended Benzema well and offered valuable cover for Araujo.

    Andreas Christensen (7/10):

Put a free header off target. Help dig in to prevent a late winner from Los Blancos.

    Alejandro Balde (7/10):

Loads of running and ever-improving in his defensive positioning. Nice assist late on.

    Midfield

    Sergi Roberto (7/10):

A surprise inclusion in the XI. Rewarded his manager's faith with the equaliser.

    Sergio Busquets (7/10):

Made the standard range of tackles. Was worryingly slow to recover on a couple of occasions.

    Frenkie de Jong (8/10):

Created five chances, completed most of his passes, relieved pressure with some wonderful dribbles. A lovely showing.

  • Getty

    Attack

    Gavi (7/10):

Scrappy, energetic, reliable on the ball. Lucky not to get a red card for barging Dani Ceballos over off the ball. Seems to lose his head a bit in the big games.

    Robert Lewandowski (7/10):

Forced some good saves out of Courtois, blasted a scissor kick over the bar. Unlucky not to find the net.

    Raphinha (7/10):

Dangerous in his running, regularly cutting onto his left foot. Fired in four shots on goal.

    Subs & Manager

    Franck Kessie (8/10):

A bit of a surprise that he didn't start. Grabbed the winner in stoppage time.

    Ferran Torres (6/10):

Stretched the game with some neat runs.

    Ansu Fati (N/A):

Almost started a fight after tripping Ceballos off the ball. Booked

    Xavi (9/10):

Went for his usual 4-2-3-1 formation, and it all worked out for him rather well. Selecting Roberto over Kessie seemed a big call, but the surprise inclusion grabbed a goal. Title sewn up?

Is Barcelona really Lionel Messi's only European option if he leaves PSG?

With it now looking more and more likely that the Argentine will depart Parc des Princes this summer, clubs are going to begin vying for his services

For the fourth game in a row, Barcelona fans at Camp Nou stopped singing club songs in the 10th minute as their side took on Atletico Madrid on Sunday. Instead, the 90,000 supporters in Barca shirts began chanting Lionel Messi's name, a chorus calling for the Argentine's return to Catalunya.

Club officials, meanwhile, have made no secret of their shared desire to bring Messi back to Camp Nou, publicly admitting in the past few weeks that they are in active negotiations to secure a sensational homecoming for a club legend.

And with a Paris Saint-Germain exit now looking increasingly likely, the Blaugrana might just fancy their chances.

After all, it does make a lot of sense. The door has always been open to a Barcelona reunion for Messi, especially given the fact that he never really wanted to leave anyway. Add to that the fact that Barca need someone to offer creativity in the final third, and there is a meeting of tactical sensibility and football romanticism here.

But there are other clubs out there who also wouldn't mind having Messi on their payroll, though it would be a complex agreement to come to. Messi would likely command wages in the range of his current PSG deal, with the Ligue 1 leaders paying him around €37 million (£33m/$41m) per year.

He would also need to be enticed by a viable sporting project. Champions League football is a bare minimum, and Messi would likely want to be in a situation where he could compete for a league title, too. That rules out most of Europe, with only a few clubs capable of making this deal happen.

But if not Barcelona, then who will Messi play for? GOAL takes a look at some of the Argentine's options…

  • Marca

    Manchester City

If Barcelona is the top destination for the football romantics, then Manchester City is arguably a close second.

It was Pep Guardiola who truly unlocked Messi's greatness by famously deploying him in a false nine role, and a reunion with the City boss would be a tantalising prospect.

There are a few tactical questions here. Primarily, where to fit Messi in a system geared towards Erling Haaland? Guardiola has tinkered to no end this season and seems to have finally settled on a line up that gets the best out of his side. And although Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva seem likely to depart this summer, Messi isn't a like-for-like replacement for either.

Still, if there's anyone that can fit the pieces together, it's Messi's former boss. And City, financial issues due to state money notwithstanding, could certainly throw a massive salary at him.

  • Getty Images

    Manchester United

United do not need any more attacking midfielders or wingers. Erik ten Hag is already spoilt for choice at the position, and Bruno Fernandes isn't getting kicked out of the XI anytime soon — no matter who comes in.

But United have lamented their lack of goalscoring this season, despite Marcus Rashford's impressive return. And while Messi isn't the goalscorer he once was, his 800-plus career goals suggest that he can still pop up with one here and there. United also have enough defensive cover from midfield in the form of Casemiro for the Argentine to roam and create.

There is expected to be financial leverage in some form. While the Glazer family haven't been as quick to sell as previously assumed, there will undoubtedly be money for investment this summer. But they might turn to a striker, perhaps Victor Osimhen or Harry Kane, before addressing other positions.

This one is, admittedly, incredibly unlikely.

  • Getty Images

    Chelsea

The last time Chelsea tried to sign a superstar, it helped push a very good manager out of the door.

But 36-year-old Messi is a different proposition than an immobile Cristiano Ronaldo. And there is a slither of reason behind this potentially working out.

Chelsea are due for a massive summer clearout. Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, N'Golo Kante and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are all unlikely to be playing at Stamford Bridge next year. Add to that the fact that Joao Felix might not make his loan move permanent, and Chelsea do indeed have room for another creative player.

There will also be some connections here. Messi and Enzo Fernandez developed a terrific understanding for the national team, while Chelsea are expected to hire Messi's former PSG coach and fellow Argentine Mauricio Pochettino. Although the manager was let go in unspectacular terms from Parc des Princes, he has since revealed that he enjoyed working with the World Cup winner.

Chelsea, like United, need a striker. But signing Messi would be a typical move for rookie owner Todd Boehly.

    Bayern Munich

Bayern have been something of a mess under new manager Thomas Tuchel. The Bavarians have struggled for both form and results, have crashed out of the Champions League and now find themselves sat in second place in the Bundesliga.

The reasons for their poor run are many, but a lack of attacking quality certainly hasn't helped. While these problems aren't always solved by individuals, the insertion of Messi into Tuchel's 3-4-3 could certainly help.

A Tuchel system would theoretically limit Messi's defensive responsibilities, too, with a hard-working wing-back outside him to offer cover. Add to that the fact that Bayern often face sides who like to sit in, and Messi seems an interesting tactical fit.

There is, of course, the financial issue. Bayern were reluctant to shell out the necessary cash for a 21-year-old Haaland last summer, and it's hard to imagine them spending more on wages for an ageing Messi.
