Matt Doherty backed for Wolves return

Even though Wolves’ technical director Scott Sellars recently played down the prospect of major spending from the Midlands club during the current January transfer window, one potential deal that they could realistically pull off in the coming weeks would be to bring Matt Doherty back to Molineux from fellow Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.

Earlier this month, it was reported by Football Insider that Wolves had expressed an interest to Spurs that they would like to sign the Irishman this month.

Since then, journalist Pete O’Rourke has said that Doherty “would seriously consider” joining Bruno Lage’s squad and leaving the north London club.

Since joining Spurs back in the 2020 summer transfer window in a deal worth a reported fee of £14.7m, Doherty has made 41 appearances across all competitions with only 21 of them coming in the Premier League, suggesting that he has not been a first-choice player for the Lilywhites, especially with just four appearances and no starts in the league this season.

During his time as a Wolves player in which he said he felt “privileged” by, loving life at Molineux, the 29-year-old racked up a total of 302 appearances across all competitions, with an impressive return of 28 goals and 41 assists along the way.

Wolves’ current right-wing back Nelson Semedo has been in impressive form in the Premier League so far this season, earning himself an overall performance rating of 6.77/10, making him their fifth-highest rated outfield player according to WhoScored.

That said, Lage could still strike gold by luring Doherty back to Wolves this month to give some competition to the Portuguese international in that position and depth for Lage in case of any potential injuries.

It would also presumably please plenty of Wolves fans to see Doherty back at Molineux given his experience of playing for them and helping them come up from the Championship to the Premier League.

Labelled as a “superb” player for his previous efforts in a Wolves shirt by Danny Mills, the £10.8m-rated defender could potentially receive a hero’s welcome this month if he were to move back to Molineux.

Wolves and Lage should definitely approach Tottenham in the coming weeks to see if they would be willing to let Doherty go for a reasonable fee. After all, the idea of him returning to the Midlands is a sweat one.

Spurs handed Andrea Belotti transfer boost

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a massive boost in their pursuit of mooted transfer target Andrea Belotti this week…

What’s the word?

During the summer transfer window, the north London outfit were reportedly ‘observing’ the 27-year-old’s situation as he entered the final year of his current contract at Serie A outfit Torino, as per Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness).

They were once again linked ahead of January and now it seems as if they have been gifted their biggest boost yet, should sporting director Fabio Paratici still retain such interest.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Bulls have offered him a new deal but nothing has been agreed, as he also relayed comments from club president Urbano Cairo, who said: “I don’t see big chances to extend his contract, but we’ll see.”

Should they swoop?

It would not be a surprise to see Spurs make a move for a striker in the near future, considering an out-of-form Harry Kane is their only senior option. He’s scored just once in the Premier League all season and that has to be a cause for concern to manager Antonio Conte.

Belotti is increasingly likely to be available for nothing in the summer, and that means foreign clubs like Tottenham can submit pre-contract offers to the Torino talisman as early as January.

Valued at a whopping £31.5m by Transfermarkt, the Italy international would be quite the steal, especially fresh off the back of winning Euro 2020. He has proven to be a very prolific goalscorer over recent times.

The forward has bagged double figures in every season since 2015/16, including a career-best tally of 28 goals in the 2016/17 campaign, via Transfermarkt.

Ex-Spurs shot-stopper Joe Hart briefly played with Belotti at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino and described the frontman as a unique talent, different to the big names we usually see mentioned across Europe.

“Andrea is similar to all the great strikers, English and not. It’s hard to compare him to someone else because he’s special,” he lauded to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. “He’s Belotti and that’s it. He has [an] instinct for goals, personality and he’s a team player: he’s always focused on his team and plays hard to help it.”

Things have not gone to plan for him this campaign, managing only two goals and five starts, but injuries have somewhat hampered his season so far and that doesn’t take away from his impressive and consistent goalscoring record over the years; not to mention his role as captain, either.

It’s evident that Spurs are in desperate need of alternatives to the misfiring Kane and Belotti could be a bargain solution, even more so after the door has seemingly opened for them to strike a deal at the turn of the year.

Paratici and Conte should act after this latest development from Romano. They have been gifted a massive boost, so it would be foolish to not at least try and lure the Italian to north London.

Journalist plays down interest in Ait-Nouri

Crystal Palace will not attempt to sign Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

The Lowdown: Ait-Nouri impresses for Wolves

Wanderers are enjoying a good start to life under Bruno Lage, with Sunday’s 0-0 draw at home to Chelsea their latest positive result. A number of Wolves players have shone this season and one such example is Ait-Nouri, who has produced a string of good performances at left-back.

The 20-year-old has started eight Premier League games and was excellent up against Mohamed Salah in the last-gasp defeat to Liverpool earlier this month. Indeed, his 7.12 WhoScored average rating over the course of the campaign is the best in Lage’s squad, so that performance against the Reds was no one-off.

The Latest: Palace won’t be signing Ait-Nouri

Despite Ait-Nouri being linked with a move to Palace, Barclay has told GIVEMESPORT that the Frenchman will not be moving to Selhurst Park in the January transfer window, news which will surely come as a big boost for Wolves given the youngster’s performances in recent months.

The journalist said of the Eagles’ links with the 20-year-old as a positional rival to Tyrick Mitchell: “They’ve already got a left-back who is young and playing really well. You can see why it doesn’t really make a lot of sense, so I’d be really surprised if that happens. From what I’m told, he’s not a target.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“375704”]

The Verdict: Big player for the future

Ait-Nouri has made such an impressive start to life at Wolves since joining from Angers and he looks a player of vast potential. For that reason, Wolves must do their utmost to keep hold of him for as long as possible, with the young Frenchman likely to keep Jonny out of the team upon the Spaniard’s return from injury.

The 20-year-old has averaged a highly impressive 3.9 tackles per game in the league this season, which is comfortably the most of any Wolves player, highlighting his tenacity.

His current deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2026, so Wolves should at least be able to demand a big fee for his services if another club were to come knocking. The good news for now is that it’s not likely to be Crystal Palace next month.

Everton transfer news on Perisic

Many Everton fans have been left fuming as some transfer news has emerged on Ivan Perisic.

According to a report from earlier in the week by L’Interista, which has since been shared by EFC DAILY on their Twitter page, the Goodison Park faithful have ‘probed the ground’ about a potential move for the Inter Milan winger, along with AC Milan and AS Roma.

Perisic is one of the most decorated players of his generation, winning the UEFA Champions League as well as several of the biggest league titles in European football with some top clubs (Transfermarkt).

However, he is 32 years of age now, certainly past his best and hardly the type of signing to take the Blues into a new era under Rafael Benitez.

Given that both Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray moved to Merseyside in the summer transfer window as well, wingers should not be a priority for the manager either when it comes to strengthening his squad in January, with right-back perhaps a much more pressing need, as well as the middle of the park.

Aston Villa: Fans erupt at Martinez save footage

Many Aston Villa fans have erupted after footage of Emiliano Martínez making an ‘incredible’ save versus Leicester City was shared on the club’s social media accounts.

Aston Villa continued their strong start under Steven Gerrard with a 2-1 win over Leicester, with defender Ezri Konsa leading the comeback after scoring twice at Villa Park.

Following the win, Villa manoeuvred above Leicester in the standings, moving up into the top-half of the table –  in 10th place.

Goalkeeper Martínez continued to be in fine-form after making 3 saves to deny the Foxes a much-needed point, boosting Gerrard’s record to three wins in four.

Having made four clean sheets in 14 appearances in the Premier League this season, Martínez has proven to be essential to Villa. Since his arrival from Arsenal in 2020, the Argentine has become a fan favourite, and with plenty of good reason.

In his debut 2020/21 season, the keeper tied Brad Friedel’s club record of 15 Premier League clean sheets in a single campaign, and so was voted Supporters’ Player of the Season – just last week he landed sixth in the yearly Yashin award.

His importance was certainly on show in the game against Leicester, where Martínez made a ‘magical’ reactionary save to keep the Villans ahead, denying a headed effort from Harvey Barnes.

Rangers fans on Aribo penalty incident

Lots of Glasgow Rangers fans have been left fuming over an incident involving Joe Aribo in their 2-0 win in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night.

The Nigeria international went down inside the box early on in the second half of their match against Brondby, but no penalty was given after a check from VAR.

It would have capped off what was a very good overall performance from Aribo, who impressed many members of the Ibrox faithful particularly for his display in the first half.

Luckily for Steven Gerrard’s team, they were already 2-0 up at that stage thanks to goals in the first half from Leon Balogun and Kemar Roofe, but if goal difference becomes a factor in terms of qualifying for the knockout phase, then Light Blues supporters will surely go back to this incident.

Conte should turn to Spurs’ U23 prodigy

Tottenham Hotspur have a major problem in attack.

Heading into the international break, Antonio Conte’s side have failed to register a shot on target in nearly four hours of Premier League football, with their last goal coming over five hours ago.

Whilst no other team in the division is averaging fewer shots per game (10.1) than Spurs. Not even rock-bottom Norwich City (10.2) or either of the other two teams in the relegation zone.

That will be something the Italian needs to work on with the players he has left at Hotspur Way over the next ten days.

Perhaps it would be a wise decision to promote the Lilywhites’ U23 goal machine Dilan Markanday to the first-team set-up as he could be a surprise fix to their woes – or at least he’ll put the pressure on the likes of Harry Kane, Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli under pressure to perform.

Earlier this week, the 20-year-old gem was nominated for the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award for the third time in seven months after continuing his fine form in the competition.

Meanwhile, last week, he bagged his tenth goal of the season – in just as many games – as Spurs’ youngsters drew with Brighton and Hove Albion’s U23 side.

Despite this form, Markanday has only been given a 15-minute cameo in the Europa Conference League but he is deserving of much more than that.

The Barnet-born youngster also became a history-maker as the first British-Asian to play for the north Londoners and he’s targeting a long and successful career at the club.

“The dream is to play for Tottenham for the next 15 years, playing every game, but obviously I know things might not work out and there are going to be ups and downs,” he told journalist Jonathan Veal.

Back in 2019, football.london reporter Alasdair Gold made a comparison to former youth product Marcus Edwards, who Mauricio Pochettino once likened to Lionel Messi.

“Markanday has looked bright today. Have always felt he has a very similar running and dribbling style to Marcus Edwards,” he tweeted.

Indeed, the youngster has been “scoring plenty” this campaign, so it’s only right to promote him into the first-team and see if he can emerge as a secret weapon in the coming weeks and months.

Spurs’ problems in the final third are evident and given the form he’s in, it’s worth a punt.

Man Utd struck gold over Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United appear to have turned a corner in terms of their recruitment since the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and one purchase stands out amongst them all.

For years, it appeared as though the Red Devils hierarchy were playing a game of Football Manager when it came to their dealings in the transfer market.

Whenever a big name became available, such as Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao, or Bastien Schweinsteiger, United snapped them up without any consideration as to whether they would fit in the current manager’s plans.

However, after many seasons spent meandering post-Sir Alex Ferguson, the arrival of Bruno Fernandes back in January 2020 marked a new era for the English giants.

After joining the Old Trafford outfit via a £46.5m move from Sporting Lisbon, Fernandes couldn’t hide his love for the club and promised to inspire Solskjaer’s charges to silverware.

“For me to now play for Manchester United feels incredible,” said the Portugal international. “My love of Manchester United really started when I used to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play and ever since then I have been a big fan of this great club.

“I have worked hard to get to this moment, and I can promise the fans that I will give everything for the badge to help bring us more success and trophies.”

And Fernandes certainly delivered on his pledge to give everything. The now 27-year-old produced an astonishing return of eight goals and seven assists in his first 14 Premier League games for United, impressing a whole host of onlookers, including Roy Keane.

“He’s lifted everybody at the club. It’s as if he’s been there 20 years. He’s got pure quality,” claimed the Sy Sports pundit and former United legend.

“The big plus for Ole over the last year or so is that the recruitment seems to be getting better. He looks like he’s going to be a big player for United for the next few years.”

Fernandes has continued in the same vein ever since, taking his tallies up to 44 goals and 28 assists in just 90 outings for the Red Devils, an outrageous output that has seen his market value skyrocket to £81m.

There’s no doubt that United struck gold over the £180,000-per-week beast, but now he must deliver on his promise to secure a major trophy, ending the club’s longest drought in over 30 years.

Bruce must unleash Jacob Murphy v Spurs

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce is reportedly set to be sacked by the club’s new owners PIF in the coming weeks as they attempt to find a replacement for the 60-year-old.

The former Aston Villa boss will be in the dugout against Tottenham on Sunday in the Premier League and it could be his last match in charge of the Magpies.

This could mean that a number of players may have the added motivation of performing to impress anyone watching on from the stands with a view to taking over from Bruce ahead of their next league game.

Keeping this in mind, Bruce could hand a parting gift to one player in particular for this match by unleashing Jacob Murphy against Spurs.

The 26-year-old has only started three of his seven Premier League appearances this season (most recently against Southampton in late August) and the clash on Sunday could offer him a chance to impress Bruce’s successor, whoever that may be, heading into the rest of the season. Putting in a strong performance could go a long way to making him a regular under the new boss, with the same going for the rest of his team-mates ahead of this match.

With Newcastle facing Tottenham and their many talented attackers, Bruce may revert to a three-at-the-back formation, and this would open up a place at right wing-back, which could suit Murphy perfectly. The 26-year-old has provided one goal and one assist in his three league starts this term, with both coming whilst playing as a wing-back.

Former Premier League forward Noel Whelan once hailed Murphy as a fantastic player for the Magpies, saying: “Murphy is a player with so much ability. He was brought to that club to run, be direct, use that pace and skill that he has with the ball at his feet and now he seems to be doing it.

“Murphy seems to be enjoying football again at Newcastle. The surroundings, the manager and the squad all seem to have made a nice connection. Newcastle seems a happier camp right now and Murphy is showing what a fantastic player he is.”

The £25k-per-week dynamo could catch the eye if deployed in a wing-back role against Tottenham, which is why Bruce must unleash him on Sunday. It would be a parting gift from the manager to the 26-year-old, who could be very grateful if he is able to turn in a positive performance and impress the right people at the Tyneside club.

Xhaka’s value continues to crash at Arsenal

The decision to hand Granit Xhaka a new contract is looking worse and worse as the Arsenal midfielder’s transfer value continues to plummet.

He joined the Gunners in a £30m move from Borussia Monchengladbach after the club’s hierarchy pulled out of a deal to sign N’Golo Kante from Leicester City.

That now looks like one of the worst decisions in the modern era, especially as the Switzerland international continues to cause controversy in north London, whilst the former Arsenal target continues to win more silverware at Stamford Bridge, the most recent of which were the Champions League and Super Cup.

There have been arguments over the years that Xhaka was never a player pushed for by then-manager Arsene Wenger and that he was actually a name that came up through a service called ‘StatDNA’ – something that Ivan Gazidis championed for.

At one stage, the French veteran wanted to sign Antoine Griezmann from Real Sociedad but the aforementioned system said otherwise.

Throughout his five years at the Emirates Stadium, Xhaka has seen the captaincy stripped from him, has been sent off four times, including one before the international break against Man City – a game Arsenal were well-beaten 5-0 – and he very nearly left the club before Edu Gaspar and co offered him a new contract extension.

During the same time frame, the 28-year-old’s value has gone from a career-high £45m in December 2018 to a new low at Arsenal as his worth now stands at just £19.8m, which is a decrease of 56%, as per Transfermarkt.

Although that should come as no surprise given his inconsistencies on the pitch.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville lambasted Xhaka back in 2019 after his rash decision in one north London derby. “Absolute madness from Xhaka from an experienced player who never becomes experienced,” he claimed as the Gunners were beaten by Spurs. “He does it week in week out and never learns.”

More recently, club legend Kevin Campbell dubbed him a “liability” only last month.

The longer the 98-cap Switzerland star is at the club, the more the club has to deal with the consequences of Gazidis-created nightmare. As evident against City before the international break, Xhaka continues to let Arsenal down and he can count his lucky stars that he was not ruthlessly axed in the summer.

As his value continues to crash, it’ll be harder and harder to get him off the books for a decent fee.
