Ronaldo's former United and Portugal team-mate Nani labelled the five-time Ballon d'Or winner "a machine" and also asked fans to enjoy the final moments of the careers of the pair often hailed as the best to ever grace the game, arguing that the sport will change the day they decide to call it a day.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo and Messi have defined inarguably the greatest individual rivalry football has ever seen. The duo shared the stage for over 15 years, with the Argentine clinching eight Ballons d'Or and the Portuguese winning the award five times. They shared 10 of those awards for 10 straight years. While the fanbases of both players have more or less focused on undermining the achievements of the other, Ronaldo and Messi have often spoken admirably about each other.

  • WHAT NANI SAID

Speaking at an event on Wednesday, Nani was asked about Ronaldo signing a new two-year deal with Al-Nassr. The former winger said: "He's a machine, he's a different player and you can tell by the level he's reached in football. We criticise Ronaldo and Messi a lot, but the day they retire, football won't be the same. The fact that they've dropped off the radar of the best clubs made a difference straight away. We have to make the most of it while they're still on the pitch."

WHAT NEXT FOR RONALDO AND MESSI?

Messi and Inter Miami's Club World Cup campaign ended in the round of 16, when they lost 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain. There have been reports suggesting that the 38-year-old wants to return to Europe in order to prepare for next year's World Cup in the best possible way. Meanwhile, Ronaldo has just signed a new two-year deal, aiming to breach the 1000-goal mark and remain in top form with the hope that he can achieve his final hurrah by winning next year's World Cup with Portugal.

Dan Moriarty joins Yorkshire on three-year contract

Yorkshire have signed Dan Moriarty, the South African-born left-arm spinner, on a three-year contract from Surrey, making his loan move permanent.Moriarty broke into Surrey’s first team in 2020 and was part of their side that reached the T20 Blast final that season. But he gradually found opportunities harder to come by, and played a solitary game in their County Championship win last year.He played four games on loan at Yorkshire earlier this year, but will spend the rest of the season with Surrey.”I’m incredibly honoured and extremely excited to begin this new chapter with Yorkshire Cricket,” Moriarty said. “Headingley is a special place to play, and I’ve really enjoyed my time with the club so far and I’m looking forward to continue creating special memories and improve my game at such a prestigious club.He added in a Surrey media release: “I am extremely grateful for the opportunities and experiences this club have given me over the past three years. A massive thank you to all players, staff and members for everything. I will look back at my time at Surrey fondly.”Darren Gough, Yorkshire’s managing director, said Moriarty would “play a big part in everything we are looking to achieve” moving forward. Gough said: “I’m pleased to have secured Dan on a three-year deal. He is a brilliant addition to the team – offering up another bow to our bowling attack – and has impressed at Yorkshire.”We are so pleased that Dan is staying at Headingley. He is the kind of player and person who will continue to add so much to our dressing room, and we look forward to him enjoying a long and successful career with the club.”Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, said: “It’s always disappointing when a player chooses to leave Surrey to go to another county but after numerous conversations with Mozza I fully understand and respect the tough decision he has taken.”He feels he will get more opportunities at Yorkshire to further his own career ambitions and I wish him well and thank him for the contributions he has given to Surrey since joining us.”

Man City ready to accept bid for £300k-p/w star who's fed up at the Etihad

Manchester City are now ready to accept offers for a £300,000-per-week player, who has become unhappy with his role at the Etihad Stadium, according to a report.

Man City could lose a number of stars this summer

Although Man City are still in contention for the Champions League, there has been a serious drop-off this season, and their hopes of qualifying for Europe’s elite competition were dealt a blow in the 1-0 loss against Nottingham Forest last time out.

It could be very much the end of an era for Pep Guardiola’s side, with Kyle Walker already leaving on loan to AC Milan, while Kevin De Bruyne and İlkay Gündoğan are set to be out of contract at the end of the campaign, leaving doubt over their futures.

As such, Guardiola will be tasked with rebuilding his squad in the summer, and there could be some more departures, with a report claiming Bernardo Silva has agreed terms with Paris Saint-Germain, and now another player involved in the historic treble-winning 2022/23 campaign could be shown the exit door.

According to Football Insider, Man City are now ready to accept offers for winger Jack Grealish, who moved to the Etihad Stadium for £100m back in 2021.

Grealish remains contracted until the summer of 2027, but he is said to be unhappy with his role in the squad, which could lead to a premature departure.

Manchester City's JackGrealishbefore the match

The Sky Blues have dropped their asking price for the winger, who they are now happy to let leave, and they are willing to accept a bid if their demands are met, although it is unclear what sort of fee they would be looking to receive.

Time up for Grealish at the Etihad

The 29-year-old will never be forgotten for the part he played in the treble-winning campaign, but it is probably best for all parties if he moves on this summer, given that he has fallen down the pecking order considerably this season.

The former Aston Villa man hasn’t started a Premier League match in the entirety of 2025, having been ineffectual whenever he was provided with opportunities in the team earlier in the campaign, picking up just one assist in 16 appearances.

Of course, on his day the £300k-per-week winger is still capable of conjuring up magic, scoring against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, while he also received high praise for some of his play in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal back in September.

However, Grealish has arguably become far too inconsistent to justify his £100m price tag and huge wages, so it is a wise decision for City to accept offers in the summer, as Guardiola looks to continue the rebuild required to turn his side back into title contenders.

Hurricanes eliminated despite extraordinary victory, Heat face Thunder in the Eliminator

Tim David defended 10 in the last over after the visitors had been comfortably on track in a low-scoring match

Tim David held his nerve with the ball as Hobart Hurricanes kept secured a remarkable two-run victory over in-form Brisbane Heat in Launceston. This gave them a slim chance of making it through to the BBL playoffs – provided Melbourne Stars stars beat Sydney Thunder during the second game of the day. That did not happen and now Hurricanes are out of the competition. The Heat, meanwhile, were booted out of the Knockout Final and ended up in the Eliminator after fluffing a chase of 121. On a two-paced surface, which proved difficult for batting, they appeared on course at 103 for 4 in the 17th over. But they stumbled and it came down to a dramatic last over where Heat needed 10 runs to lock up third spot and a home knockout final. David did enough against James Bazley but Hurricanes knew they needed another result to go their way. And in the end, it didn’t.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Meredith and Ellis star before David’s late heroicsHurricanes’ finals chances were almost dead and buried with their hopes resting with star quicks Riley Meredith and Nathan Ellis. They obliged in menacing early bursts with Meredith removing Usman Khawaja and then Ellis knocking over Marnus Labuschagne’s off stump with a gem of a delivery to revive Hurricanes.Hurricanes were suddenly in the box seat when Heat lost wickets in consecutive deliveries in the sixth over when Matthew Renshaw was run out by a brilliant gather and direct throw from Zak Crawley. After Meredith’s initial three-over spell, Hurricanes weren’t as threatening and clearly missed left-arm spinner Paddy Dooley, who has starred in a breakout season but missed due to a groin injury. With Jimmy Peirson and Sam Hain holding firm, Meredith desperately returned in the 15th over but couldn’t breakthrough although his last searing delivery smacked Hain on the right wrist. Ellis returned and snared the key of Peirson as Hurricanes’ season went down to the wire. With their frontliners bowled out, Hurricanes fortunes rested on David and he delivered with accurate full deliveries to fluster Bazley. He helped run out non-striker Matthew Kuhnemann on the third delivery before the twists continued when David bowled a full toss that Bazley hit for six. He recovered to thwart Bazley on the final two deliveries to keep Hurricanes’ season alive at least momentarily.Heat fall apart at the deathHeat will be ruing letting third spot slip through their fingers. They struggled early before a composed Peirson and Hain combined for a 73-run partnership to dig Heat out of a hole.Peirson, who was Heat’s most reliable batter during their early season struggles, mustered his wealth of experience while Hain showed why he’s become a key part of the middle-order with clever flicks on the leg-side.Hain also showed his toughness after the blow from Meredith and remained at the crease, but fell shortly later with Heat still 18 runs short. Peirson then Bazley were unable to be the hero as Heat finished fifth and prepare to take on the Thunder in the Eliminator on Friday.Marnus Labuschagne held a brilliant catch in the outfield•Getty Images

Swepson continues strong rebound ahead of India tourLegspinner Mitchell Swepson was dropped earlier in the season and failed to take a wicket in his first five innings that he bowled. But he’s hit back hard recently and bowled particularly tidily in a much-needed tonic ahead of a defining Test tour of India for Swepson. He continued his strong bounce back with a menacing spell to tie down Hurricanes’ powerful batters in the middle overs.Swepson conjured sharp turn although his only wicket was rather fortuitous when a long hop snared struggling Ben McDermott, who was brilliantly caught by a diving Marnus Labuschagne. He conceded just one boundary in his four-over spell to finish with 1 for 17 to play his role in a disciplined attack with seamer Michael Neser claiming the spoils with a four-wicket haul.Hurricanes’ rejigged batting order strugglesHurricanes on paper have arguably the most explosive batting order in the competition. But they’ve badly underperformed and Hurricanes entered the clash on the brink. With their backs to the wall, Hurricanes decided to go for broke and rejig their misfiring batting order. D’Arcy Short, once a BBL star but whose batting has spiralled the last two seasons, was dropped for Macalister Wright who made his season debut after impressing in local cricket.Opener McDermott, another out of form batter, moved down to No. 4 and replaced skipper Matthew Wade who shifted to No. 6 – a position he occupies for Australia but hadn’t batted for Hurricanes since BBL07.The changes didn’t provide the necessary spark with Hurricanes losing wickets regularly. McDermott and Wade both fell cheaply with only Wright saving Hurricanes from embarrassment with a run-a-ball 56 after a watchful start. He upstaged his more high-profile teammates and his knock proved the standout in a low-scoring contest.

Gill, Pujara centuries and Kuldeep five-for put India in firm control

Shubman Gill scored his first Test hundred, and Cheteshwar Pujara his first in 52 innings and the fastest of his career as India declared on 258 for 2, setting Bangladesh a target of 513 in the first Test in Chattogram. More realistically, they gave themselves two days and a bit to pick up ten wickets. In response, Bangladesh openers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan saw off the 12 overs left in the day’s play. This was after Kuldeep Yadav, playing his first Test in 22 months and eighth overall, picked up his third five-wicket haul to skittle out the hosts for 150 in the first innings.Resuming the day on 133 for 8, Bangladesh could add only 17 more as Kuldeep had Ebadot Hossain caught down the leg side in the fifth over of the day to complete his five-for. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the other overnight batter, then tried to farm the strike even more but was stumped off Axar Patel soon after while going for a big hit. That gave India a lead of 254 but they decided against enforcing the follow-on.In the second innings, Khaled Ahmed and Taijul Islam opened the bowling for Bangladesh as Ebadot didn’t step onto the field. On Thursday too, after dismissing Shreyas Iyer, he was off the field for the rest of India’s first innings. With Shakib Al Hasan also not bowling, probably because of the rib injury he sustained during the ODI series, the hosts were left with just three frontline bowlers.KL Rahul and Gill, though, started slowly, accumulating only 16 runs in the first eight overs. Gill upped the scoring rate after lunch but Khaled broke their 70-run stand. Using the short-ball play, he first hurried Rahul and then had him pulling one to fine leg for 23.Khaled also hit Pujara on the body twice, but the plan didn’t work against Gill, who took the short ball on and hit the seamer for a four and a six. Later, as Khaled seemed to be tiring at the end of his seven-over spell, Pujara too pulled him for four.Shubman Gill got to his maiden Test hundred off 147 balls•AFP/Getty Images

Against spinners, Gill used the sweep shot to good effect, picking up three boundaries with it. He, though, had a scare on 70 when Yasir Ali pinged him on the pads. The on-field umpire ignored the vociferous appeal, and when Bangladesh opted to review it, they were told the DRS technology was down.Post tea, Gill and Pujara batted with even more intent. Gill moved to 99 with a reverse-swept four off Mehidy and two balls later hit him over mid-on for a one-bounce four to get to his hundred. He fell for 110 while attempting another big shot, but Pujara took over after that.Having reached his fifty off 87 deliveries, Pujara took only 43 balls more to get to his hundred. On the way, he used his feet against spinners to loft them over mid-off and mid-on, deployed the lap sweep on more than one occasion, and even brought out the reverse sweep as India eyed declaration. From the other end, Virat Kohli almost exclusively dealt in singles. He and Pujara added 75 off 73 balls in an unbroken stand for the fifth wicket, Kohli’s share in that being 19 off 29 balls.A misfield at mid-on took Pujara to the three-figure mark off 130 balls, and with that, India declared their innings as well.

Better than Danso: Wolves looking to hijack move for PL "monster"

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Vitor Pereira is hoping that he can keep the likes of Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha at Molineux over the next couple of days amid interest in the pair.

If so, the Old Gold have a solid chance of avoiding relegation to the Championship. So far, the club have made just one signing, bringing defender Emmanuel Agbadou to the club from Stade Reims.

Will Pereira raid the transfer market over the next couple of days? He could attempt to raid a Premier League move that looked signed, sealed and delivered.

Wolves looking to hijack move for Premier League defender

According to Ben Jacobs, who was speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Wolves are keeping an eye on Aston Villa-linked player Axel Disasi ahead of making a potential swoop in the coming days.

The £80k-per-week centre-back has agreed personal terms with the Villa Park side, but a fee has yet to be sorted between them and Chelsea, offering the chance for the Old Gold to ‘pounce’.

Transfer Focus

This leaves the door ajar for Wolves to make their own approach to sign the Frenchman and attempt to hijack the deal.

Pereira appeared close to signing another defender, with Kevin Danso managing to agree personal terms with the top-flight side, but a fee has yet to be worked out in order to seal the deal. Indeed, the Austrian is now being heavily linked with a move to Juventus.

Disasi is currently out of favour at the Blues. Could he be a better signing than Danso should he join Wolves rather than Villa?

Why Wolves should sign Axel Disasi

The former AS Monaco star joined Chelsea two years ago, becoming a key member of the squad under Mauricio Pochettino. Under Enzo Maresca, however, he has been forced to operate at right-back occasionally, making just 17 appearances in all competitions.

Only five of those have come in his preferred centre-back position, which indicates that a move elsewhere will allow him to play in his natural slot at the heart of the defence.

Despite the lack of game time, he has still shone when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues. The 26-year-old ranks in the top 10% for non-penalty goals (0.14), progressive carries (1.29) and successful take-ons (0.5) per 90. These statistics show just how much of a forward-thinking defender he is.

In comparison, Danso ranks only in the top 50% for non-penalty goals (0.04), the top 43% for progressive carries (0.67) and the top 42% for successful take-ons (0.2) when compared to his peers in the top five European leagues.

Elsewhere, Disasi also loses possession fewer times per game than Danso (5.5 vs 11.1), wins a higher percentage of aerial duels (71% vs 64%) and wins possession more (0.3 vs 0.1) in their respective domestic leagues.

The French centre-back was dubbed a “monster” by journalist Rahman Osman during his first full season at Chelsea, but it is clear his future doesn’t appear to be bright at Stamford Bridge.

Pereira should be doing all he can to hijack his move to Villa, that’s a certainty.

Everton offered chance to sign 28 y/o midfielder in £2m January transfer

Everton have been in contact with one midfielder’s club, as they eye a £2m signing before the end of the January transfer window.

Latest Everton news

It has been an impressive start to life back at Goodison Park for David Moyes, with the Scot winning two of his first three matches in charge of the Blues again.

Having lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa and then won 3-2 against Tottenham at Goodison last weekend, Everton picked up a brilliant 1-0 victory at Brighton on Saturday afternoon. The two victories have seen the Merseysiders go seven points clear of the Premier League relegation zone, with the early signs extremely positive under their new manager.

Everton managerDavidMoyesbefore the match

Blues supporters will now be hoping to see new faces arriving in the current window and Ajax attacker Brian Brobbey has been linked with a move, as Everton potentially look to hijack West Ham’s attempts to snap him up. He is thought to be in London to complete a transfer to the Hammers, though.

Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil has also been backed to seal a switch to Goodison, having stood out as an important player for the Black Cats this season. He has started 28 of his side’s 29 Championship matches to date in 2024/25, registering three assists and averaging 1.9 tackles per game, helping them get into the playoff positions.

Everton in contact over signing of £2m midfielder

According to a new update from The Sunday Mirror [via Everton News], Everton have been in contact with Botafogo over the signing of defensive midfielder Danilo Barbosa.

The Blues have been offered the opportunity to snap up the 28-year-old in a £2m deal, although Championship pair Leeds United and Sheffield United are also thought to be in the conversation, providing stiff competition.

Barbosa may not be a household name, considering he isn’t plying his trade in Europe currently, but he could be just what Everton are looking for in the middle of the park, adding a presence in that area of the pitch.

The former Brazil Under-20 international has averaged 3.7 clearances per match in the Copa Libertadores this season, highlighting his off-the-ball ability, and he has made 96 appearances for Botafogo.

Barbosa does have experience of European football, however, despite not playing there currently, having appeared a combined 169 times during stints with Braga, Nice, Valencia, Standard Liege and Benfica.

At 28, he is also now experienced enough to be able to seamlessly slot into Everton’s team, even though the pace of the Premier League may take a little time to adjust to, as well as still being young enough to be in his peak years for a while.

With Idrissa Gueye now 35 years of age and midfield reinforcements needed anyway, Barbosa could stand out as a good option for the Blues, especially as he would only cost as little as £2m.

"Extremely quick" £60m striker is very keen on joining Arsenal in January

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remains on the hunt for a new striker who can ease the pressure on Kai Havertz’s shoulders and provide the Gunners with a extra bit of cutting edge going forward.

Mikel Arteta confirms Arsenal striker plan for January

It is absolutely no secret that Arsenal are actively working to find a solution to their shortage of attacking options right now, with Bukayo Saka out until March after suffering a hamstring injury and Gabriel Jesus sidelined for the rest of 2024/2025.

Arsenal are pursuing a deal for Rosenborg midfielder Sverre Nypan as well, according to some reports, but the Premier League title chasers’ main priority is getting a forward through the door before deadline day on February 3rd.

“My opinion is clear – we lost two very important players in Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus, so we lack goals, people and options in the front line, it’s clear,” said Arteta on Arsenal signing a new forward.

“If we can get the right player, that’s what we are actively looking at, but any player – no, we need someone that makes us better and makes an impact on the team, it’s clear that for the period that we have lost them ideally, we need some help because we were short already and we’re even shorter. The team has still coped with that, but we have to do what is right for the club.”

Benjamin Sesko, Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Osimhen, Igor Jesus and Matheus Cunha are all being linked with moves to N5 right now, but prolific strikers of a high calibre won’t be easy to obtain. Arsenal have also used all of their domestic loan spots on Raheem Sterling and Neto, meaning they may have to pay a premium for Cunha.

Matheus Cunha

RB Leipzig director Marcel Schafer also appears determined not to let Sesko leave this month, making a deal difficult to pull off.

That being said, Sesko’s deal does apparently include a release clause, so a move may not be impossible according to some media sources.

Benjamin Sesko is very keen on joining Arsenal from RB Leipzig

According to GiveMeSport, they may not run into as much trouble on the player’s side. Indeed, GMS write that Sesko is showing a “keen interest” in joining Arsenal, which has given Arteta’s side some optimism that a deal can be done for the Slovenia international after they missed out on his signature last summer.

The 21-year-old, who is already on course to better his goal tally from last campaign, apparently commands a price tag of around £60 million – and Arsenal are considering an offer in and around that mark.

“Benjamin Šeško is among the game’s top young talents and has enormous potential to become a top player,” said former Leipzig technical director Christopher Vivell.

“He has all the qualities to do that. He’s extremely quick, has a great jump on him and is strong in the air. Benjamin is a real goalscorer, who despite his 1.95m (6’4″) is mobile and technically strong. His abilities make him a special player with a special profile.”
