Propper upgrade: Rangers chasing late move for "complete & dominant" star

Glasgow Rangers are running out of time to make further additions to their playing squad before the January transfer window officially slams shut on Monday.

The Gers have been linked with several players ahead of deadline day, including Nottingham Forest forward Emmanuel Dennis and Dundee central midfielder Lyall Cameron.

However, their move for Cameron is one that looks set to take place in the summer when his contract with the Scottish Premiership side expires.

There is one star who Rangers are reportedly looking to snap up a new central defender in a last-gasp swoop to improve Philippe Clement’s options at the back.

Rangers eyeing new centre-back

According to The Scottish Sun, the Light Blues are chasing a late move to sign Chelsea centre-back Aaron Anselmino before the transfer window slams shut.

The report claims that the Scottish giants are eyeing a deal to sign the Argentine youngster on loan for the second half of the season, as the Premier League side want him to go out and play regularly until the summer.

It states that Clement wants further additions to his playing squad and that he could offer Anselmino a chance to play in the knock-out stages of the Europa League.

The Scottish Sun adds that Sheffield Wednesday and Ligue 1 giants Marseille are also interested in the central defender, which suggests that there could be strong competition for his services in the next 36 hours or so.

Why Rangers should sign Anselmino

Nils Koppen and Clement should push to win the race for his signature because he could come in as an excellent short-term addition in a position where the team is currently lacking.

James Tavernier was deployed at centre-back against USG on Thursday because of the injury issues in that position, and Anselmino could come in as a terrific option in that area.

In fact, the Chelsea youngster, who was once described as a “complete & dominant” player by scout Jacek Kulig, could come in as an upgrade on Robin Propper, based on his form for Boca Juniors.

Anselmino spent the second half of the 2024 campaign on loan at the Argentine side, having been bought from there by Chelsea last summer, and caught the eye with his performances at the heart of the defence.

As you can see in the table above, both centre-backs are reliable with the ball at their feet as they rarely cede possession and complete a high percentage of their passes in their own half.

However, Anselmino could come in to offer a more aggressive presence in the centre-back position for Clement by winning more duels and making more tackles and interceptions per game, whilst not making any major errors, if he can translate his form over to the Premiership.

These statistics suggest that Rangers could improve their team by bringing the 19-year-old starlet, who still has room to improve throughout his loan at Ibrox, to play ahead of the experienced Propper, who does not step in to cut out opposition attacks as frequently as the Chelsea youngster does.

Therefore, Koppen should push to get this deal over the line because Anselmino can provide a similar presence in possession whilst improving the team’s defensive work in the second half of the season.

Contact made: Tottenham make new approach to sign £60m Premier League ace

Tottenham Hotspur have made a fresh approach to sign a £60m-rated Premier League player, according to one journalist.

Spurs and Ange eye more signings after Kinsky

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy have already secured Spurs’ first new addition of 2025, bringing in goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague.

The shot-stoper has already made and impressed on his debut, keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.

Attention now seems to be on more additions, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano previously saying that Spurs could be “busy” with two or possibly three signings.

“They have already told the manager that they will do something. So I expect January to be busy for Spurs,” Romano said to GiveMeSport before the January window opened.

“I think it could be two signings, maybe three, I’m not sure, but it will depend on opportunities. But Tottenham are exploring options, Tottenham are actively working on scouting and following players. So I think for Tottenham it will be a busy month.”

With a goalkeeper already secured, further additions could come higher up the pitch, with Paris Saint-Germain forward Randal Kolo Muani heavily linked with a move to north London.

Spurs are actively exploring a possible move for Kolo Muani, whereas in midfield, Tottenham have also been offered Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi, who is reportedly “frustrated” with his current employers.

As well as exploring the market in Europe, a number of Premier League players have also been mooted as Tottenham targets in 2025.

Spurs held internal talks over a move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite before the turn of the year, whereas Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes was wanted last summer. Now, it looks as if a move for Gomes, valued at £60m by those at Molineux, is being considered once more.

Tottenham make fresh approach for Wolves star

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Tottenham are among the clubs who have made contact to ask for “fresh” information over a deal to sign Gomes. Wolves will only consider selling for a huge fee, though, with rivals Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United also named in the update.

Gomes is a central midfielder who can also play in a holding role if needed and has seen his Transfermarkt value rocket to a career high €40m. The Brazil international joined Wolves in January 2023 and came in for plenty of praise from Micah Richards last year, with the pundit saying Gomes is “going to the top”.

“We have to give a quick shoutout to Gomes of Wolves. Oh my word, what a player he is by the way. I didn’t have the team-sheet and I didn’t have my glasses on and I was thinking, “who’s this guy?” I couldn’t even see until I got my glasses on but Gomes, he is a player by the way.

“Obviously, we don’t get to see Wolves too much on TV. We see them on Match of the Day. Seeing him up close and personal, his touches, his anticipation when he’s winning the ball back and his weight of ball forward. Sorry Wolves fans, he’s going to the top that lad.”

Whether or not his next move is to Spurs remains to be seen, but it appears as if Gomes is a Premier League player in demand currently.

As bad as Forster: Ange simply must drop Spurs star after 4/10 performance

Tottenham Hotspur drew 2-2 with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon, undoubtedly placing more pressure on boss Ange Postecoglou.

Goals from Brennan Johnson and Rodrigo Bentancur weren’t enough for Spurs in North London after Jorgen Strand Larsen fired home a late equaliser for the visitors.

The point leaves Postecoglou’s side 11th in the Premier League table at the halfway stage of the campaign, 11 points off the Champions League spots, with the dream rapidly fading away week after week.

Tottenham Hotspur managerAngePostecoglou

The draw leaves Spurs chasing their first win in three matches, losing two and conceding nine goals in the process, with the defensive injuries causing havoc once again.

However, such issues shouldn’t excuse the performance levels of numerous players who once again failed to deliver at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs’ disappointing performers against Wolves

Striker Dominic Solanke has often been the man to provide the goods within the final third this season after his club-record £65m transfer from Bournemouth in the summer.

The Englishman has scored six Premier League goals in 2024/25, but was unable to add to his tally this afternoon, looking wasteful in possession throughout the score draw.

He only completed one of his four attempted dribbles in North London, whilst also winning just six of his 16 duels and losing possession 11 times in the process.

As for goalkeeper Fraser Forster, he was once again unable to pull up any trees as he covered for the injured Guglielmo Vicario between the sticks.

The 36-year-old made his tenth appearance of the season earlier today, but wasn’t able to add to his clean sheet tally, conceding two or more for the fifth time.

He was beaten by a sensational strike by Hwang Hee-chan for the opener, but certainly could’ve done more to keep out the visitors’ leveller, being beaten way too easily at his near post.

However, one other Spurs player failed to produce once again despite continued faith shown by Postecoglou, with the Aussie needing to take action ahead of the next league clash next weekend.

The Spurs player who was as bad as Forster against Wolves

Spurs captain Heung-min Son has for so long been the player to cause havoc for the club in attacking areas, but in recent months has struggled to produce the goods on a consistent basis in 2024/25.

The South Korean attacker has only managed to notch five goals in the league to date, with this afternoon another one of his displays to forget in North London.

He featured for just 64 minutes before being replaced by Timo Werner, but his withdrawal was understandable given his lack of impact during his hour on the pitch.

The 32-year-old only registered 27 touches of the ball, only completing 15 passes – losing possession six times and looking wasteful throughout the draw with the relegation-threatened side.

Son also missed his spot kick in the first half, with Postecoglou’s side undoubtedly going on to claim all three points had he managed to find the back of the net.

He also failed to complete any of his three attempted crosses, unable to succeed in dribbling past the opposition, looking a shadow of his former self, with his days at the top level undoubtedly numbered given his recent showings.

As a result of his dismal showing, he was handed a measly 4/10 match rating by Football London’s Alasdair Gold – highlighting how disappointing he was once more.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Given his failure to deliver once again this afternoon, Ange simply must drop him from the starting lineup in the next meeting with Newcastle United next weekend.

It’s been sad to see a fan-favourite decline given what he’s done for the club over his decade in North London, but ultimately, the Aussie needs to be brutal to save his job and take the Lilywhites back to the top end of the table.

Rangers could hire title winning manager who’d surely reinvigorate Hagi

Glasgow Rangers find themselves at arguably their lowest ebb since before Steven Gerrard took over the Ibrox club in May 2018.

Trailing leaders Celtic by 11 points and second place Aberdeen by eight points, the Light Blues Premiership challenge appears over before anyone has opened their advent calendars.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst lost his job two years ago after trailing Celtic by nine points, while Michael Beale was given the boot with his club trailing their Old Firm rivals by seven points after just seven matches.

Former Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Why then, with things certainly not looking like they will change anytime soon, is Philippe Clement still in his current role? The Gers are devoid of all confidence while playing without a distinct style that has made them unwatchable at times this season.

On Sunday evening, there were plenty of rumours circulating around social media that the Belgian had been removed from his position, but that proved to be a false dawn, as Clement remains in charge of the Ibrox side ahead of the Europa League clash against OGC Nice on Thursday evening.

It almost appears inevitable that he will leave, however, which sparks the question, who will be the next manager in the Rangers dugout?

The managers who could replace Clement at Rangers

Kevin Muscat is a name that has been floated a few times over the last couple of years. When Van Bronckhorst left, the Australian was linked with a move to Glasgow – where he spent a single season as a player in 2002/03 – before allegedly speaking to the club once Beale had left last year.

Might it be third time lucky for the coach who has won league titles in three different countries? The Ibrox faithful will hope that is the case.

Yokohama manager Kevin Muscat.

Elsewhere, current Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner was linked, but he will be off the table this time.

There are numerous managers who are currently available for work who could be excellent appointments. Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Sergio Conceicao are names that immediately spring to mind. Whether Rangers have the budget to bring either of them in is another question.

One name that hasn’t been specifically linked with the role but who could be an interesting appointment is Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who has found himself out of work since leaving Manchester United a few years ago.

Whether he wishes to get back into the cutthroat nature of club management is unknown, but he could certainly get a few players in the squad firing on all cylinders.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s managerial statistics

The former Man United forward enjoyed his greatest success in charge of Molde, where he won two league titles and a Norwegian Cup. In between these two spells in his homeland, Solskjaer had a stint at Cardiff City, although he was unable to prevent their relegation back to the English Championship during the 2013/14 campaign.

Following José Mourinho’s sacking at Old Trafford in December 2018, the Norwegian was appointed as caretaker manager, despite being in charge of Molde at the time.

A few months later, after a wonderful interim spell in charge, he was appointed as manager on a full-time basis, going on to lead the club to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League.

The 2019/20 season was his first full one in charge of the Red Devils, and they finished third in the league, their second-highest position since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. It looked like Solskjaer could finally be the man to lead the club back to the summit of English football.

Former defender Phil Jones even hailed Solskjaer’s man-management skills as being “terrific” suggesting he was bringing the squad together in ways not seen for a few years.

If it was not for Manchester City, then he would have succeeded, as the runners-up in 2020/21 was as good as it got for the Norwegian manager. Following a dismal start to the next campaign, he was sacked in November after a 4-1 defeat to Watford.

Ibrox wouldn’t faze him surely and given the fact he managed to get the best out of players such as Bruno Fernandes, the 51-year-old could get someone like Ianis Hagi firing on all fronts between now and the rest of the season…

Why Solskajaer could bring the best out of Hagi

Fernandes signed in January 2020 and was an immediate hit at Old Trafford. 20 goal contributions came in his first few months before the maestro scored 28 goals and grabbed 17 assists during his only full season under Solskjaer.

It was clear he was thriving in a 4-2-3-1 system utilised by the Norwegian and this could benefit Hagi, who can use his creativity as a number ten to good effect.

During the 2020/21 campaign, the Romanian was used wide right on as a number ten by Gerrard, registering 23 goal contributions across all competitions.

His lack of pace was sometimes an issue out wide, whereas when deployed through the middle, he could use his wonderful technical abilities to cause all sorts of chaos to opposition defences up and down the country.

Fernandes was incredible during his one full campaign under the Norwegian, befitting playing in his favoured position and being given so much freedom.

Hagi has been on the sidelines this term due to a contractual dispute, but with this solved, Solskajer could be the ideal manager to get him back firing on all cylinders yet again.

If used correctly, the 4-2-3-1 system that the former United manager uses could get the best out of several players at Ibrox, Hagi included.

It may sound like a longshot, but Solskjaer has experience managing one of, if not the biggest clubs in the world, managing to get the likes of Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and other world-class talents all to tick.

Given time, he could be the man to resurrect Rangers. The question is, will the board see him as a viable option to replace Clement? Only time will tell.

Liverpool and Slot want to sign another Real Madrid star with Tchouameni

Looking to deal a significant double blow to their European rivals, Liverpool are now reportedly interested in another Real Madrid player alongside Aurelien Tchouameni ahead of 2025.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds, as things stand, are back at the top of English and European football. Life, as far as Arne Slot and his side are concerned, has been perfect on the pitch. The Dutchman has made replacing a club legend look seamless in a successful transition that Manchester United should take note of. That said, the season is still young and Slot will be well aware that there’s still work to be done.

Liverpool weighing up surprise move to sign "colossus" Van Dijk replacement

He’s enjoyed an impressive season…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 20, 2024

After the international break, which has been full of success for several of Liverpool’s top stars, Slot’s biggest week in charge so far awaits. His side will first travel to St Mary’s to square off against Southampton in what should be a comfortable way to prepare for the visit of Real Madrid in midweek and then the arrival of champions Manchester City in a few days later.

It’s a make-or-break week for the Reds, who could be eight points clear at the top of the Premier League by the end of it and finally on the right side of victory over Madrid. But it’s not just on the pitch that the Merseyside club want to get one other on the La Liga giants, with recent reports linking Liverpool to Tchouameni in 2025, some going as far to say that talks have been opened to sign the Frenchman.

They don’t seem to want to stop at Tchouameni either. According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are also interested in Federico Valverde, with Slot personally considering the Real Madrid star to be an ideal player to ‘revitalise’ the Reds midfield.

federico-valverde-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

The Uruguay international would be joining countryman Darwin Nunez at Anfield, should he seal a move, and perhaps even his current Madrid teammate Tchouameni to take Slot’s midfield to a whole new level.

"Irreplaceable" Valverde would be an upgrade on Szoboszlai

Pinpointing a weakness in this current Liverpool side is certainly a difficult task given how they’re performing, but one player who has slightly struggled where others have thrived under Slot is Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Hungary international has recently lost his place to the in-form Curtis Jones and looks less and less like the type of controlled midfielder that his new manager prefers. If Valverde did arrive, then the former RB Leipzig man may well lose his Anfield place on a permanent basis.

Given the numbers, it’s no surprise that Valverde earned such high praise from Carlo Ancelotti at the start of the season, with the former Everton boss telling reporters as relayed by the All Football App: “Federico Valverde is irreplaceable. Toni Kroos has chosen the perfect player to take the number eight jersey.”

If Liverpool make their move, however, then Ancelotti may need to replace the “irreplaceable” in Valverde, who could complete Slot’s Anfield midfield, possibly alongside Tchouameni.

Wasim Jaffer picks his India XI for the first Test

Big pictureThe runners-up of the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) and No. 2 Test side in the world will host the current table-toppers in the ongoing WTC cycle, starting tomorrow. The first Test of the series will be the 100th of the most marketable cricketer since Sachin Tendulkar retired. And yet, the anticipation that goes with a big series is missing. The biggest reason for this, of course, is Covid-19. Teams live in bubbles, the media is not allowed to watch their preparations, fans are not allowed to stand outside grounds to welcome the players. Also there is perhaps cricket fatigue, given the recent big increase in bilateral cricket, especially T20Is. In 2021, despite the pandemic, or perhaps thanks to it and all the cricket postponed in 2020, 233 international bilaterals were played, 132 of them in the shortest format of the game. The corresponding next highest figures are 219 and 100 in 2019.Just look at Sri Lanka’s schedule: one Sunday they are playing a T20I in Melbourne, by the next Sunday they have completed a three-T20I series in India, and the following Sunday will be the third day of a Test. India are no less busy: at one point last year, they had two international teams in action at the same time.Having said that, the Indian board is hardly indulging in a hard-sell. Especially given one of the Tests will be the 100th of one of its greatest players. Only three days out from this Test did it decide to open the stands to fans, when matches either side of this Test were played in front of crowds. And the match is being played at a ground with some of the poorest facilities for crowds. Some may point to Sri Lanka’s record in India of never having won a Test as a reason for the lack of buzz. In the last 10 years, a period when the “Big Three” was formalised, they have played only three Tests in India; only Afghanistan have played fewer in the country (and Ireland are yet to play India in a Test match).Related

There is no rain expected during the Test.Stats and trivia If Virat Kohli scores 38 runs in this Test, he will become the 14th-fastest to the mark of 8000 Test runs. He will be the 29th overall to get there. R Ashwin is set to go past Richard Hadlee, Rangana Herath, Kapil Dev and Dale Steyn to become the eighth-highest wicket-taker of all time. Kapil, who is four wickets ahead of Ashwin’s 430, is India’s second-highest wicket-taker.Quotes”The [upcoming] nine Test matches [to complete India’s WTC cycle] are going to be important. I feel like we need to win almost every game. It is going to be challenging, there will be a lot of pressure, but that is where you will build a lot of character. You will see some champion cricketers coming out from this situation. If you thrive under pressure, you turn out to be a solid cricketer for the future. At the moment it is important that we try and stay in the present and think what we can do in this Mohali Test and then move forward from there.””We’ve never won in India before, so the pressure is on India to not let a match slip. Our job is to use that pressure to our advantage.”

Ashwin, Suryakumar, Rohit shine as India earn hard-fought victory

Daryl Mitchell is a seam-bowling allrounder who usually bats in the middle order, but for New Zealand’s T20 side he’s now an opening batter who barely bowls at all. Venkatesh Iyer is a seam-bowling allrounder who opens the batting for Kolkata Knight Riders, but on Wednesday night, making his India debut, he didn’t get to bowl, and walked in at No. 6.When Venkatesh faced his first ball in international cricket, India were threatening to lose a match that had seemed unloseable less than half an hour ago. With six balls left, they needed ten to win. And New Zealand, having used up all their main seam bowlers, threw the ball to Mitchell.Mitchell had earlier been out for a first-ball duck. Venkatesh had not been required at all until this point. Now they both had the chance to be the hero. Neither took that honour in the end. Venkatesh swatted the first legal ball he received for four, but was out next ball attempting a cute reverse-lap. Mitchell got that wicket, but he also sent down two big wides that reflected his rustiness as a bowler. Eventually, it came down to three off three, and Rishabh Pant, who had struggled to 13 off 16, stepped out and swiped Mitchell over mid-off to put an end to what had become an unexpectedly close contest. There had been fifties for Mark Chapman, Martin Guptill and Suryakumar Yadav, and a 48 from Rohit Sharma full of vintage strokeplay, as well as terrific bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, R Ashwin and Mitchell Santner, but the end result came down to the bit-part players.Swing keeps New Zealand quiet
After a pair of outswingers to Guptill, Bhuvneshwar greeted Mitchell with an inswinger. Mitchell jabbed at the ball with no footwork, and the ball sneaked past his inside edge to knock back middle stump. That was India’s only wicket in the powerplay, but the ball kept swinging for Bhuvneshwar, Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Siraj, and all three made a concerted effort to bowl within the stumps. Chapman, New Zealand’s No. 3, struggled to break free of this strangulation, or even get off strike. After three overs, Guptill had faced just two balls, and after five overs, he had faced just six. At that point, Chapman was on 20 off 23, and New Zealand were 26 for 1.A partnership blossoms
New Zealand got going in the last powerplay over, when Chahar overused the slower short ball and conceded 15. There was only one boundary in the next four overs – shared between Ashwin and Axar Patel – but India conceded a spate of them after that, with Guptill extending his arms through a pair of lofted drives against Siraj, and Chapman putting Axar away for six and four in the 12th over and bringing up his fifty in the process. When Guptill and Chapman hit back-to-back boundaries around the 14th over, New Zealand were 110 for 1, and looking on course for 177, according to ESPNcricinfo’s Forecaster.1:12

Daniel Vettori: R Ashwin’s skill helped him set Chapman and Phillips up

Ashwin turns on the magic
But Ashwin had other ideas. He had already discovered that this pitch was offering grip and turn if he bowled the odd ball a little slower, and had beaten Chapman’s outside edge comprehensively in the seventh over with a dipping offbreak laden with overspin. He bowled another now, pitching on leg stump, and it beat Chapman’s leg-side heave to peg back his off stump. The next three balls were a probing examination of Glenn Phillips’ technique. Two offbreaks – the first going with the arm past the outside edge, the second ripping inwards to beat the inside edge and hit thigh pad – and then the carrom ball, angling in before straightening towards off stump. Phillips’ bat sliced across the line in defence, and the ball beat his outside edge to hit back pad – more or less in line with off stump, an umpire’s call verdict sending him on his way after he reviewed.Chahar and Siraj deny New Zealand big finish
Guptill was still in, though, and big sixes off Siraj and Bhuvneshwar in the 15th and 17th overs hurried him past 50 (he got there in 31 balls) and into the sixties. Guptill then nailed a massive drive into the stands beyond midwicket off Chahar at the start of the 18th, to bring up New Zealand’s 150.The momentum seemed to be going entirely one way, but Chahar struck a crucial blow the next ball, taking pace off to ensure a repeat attempt from Guptill ended up caught on the boundary. New Zealand’s innings thereafter went like a pricked balloon: scoring only 14 off the last 16 balls of the innings, as the new batters struggled for timing.Rohit launches off
Five overs into India’s chase, this seemed like the T20 World Cup transplanted into Indian soil. Win toss, chase, win handily. India were 50 for no loss by then, with the ball coming onto the bat and allowing Rohit to show off his range of back-foot shots. Horizontal-bat slap that leaves every fielder rooted to his spot? Yes. Open-faced steer to bisect backward point and short third? Yup. Pull into the stands? Are you seriously asking? The partnership between Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav put India on top•Getty Images

Suryakumar brings his wrists to the party
Rahul fell at the start of the sixth over, picking out deep square leg with a pull off Santner, and India sent in Suryakumar, presumably to go after New Zealand’s spinners. Soon, he was purring too, pulling off his trademark whips over midwicket off Todd Astle and Lockie Ferguson. At the halfway mark, India were 85 for 1.Trent Boult sent Rohit back in the 14th over with a slower bouncer paired with a cleverly-set leg trap, but Suryakumar continued to find the boundary frequently and hurry India towards their target. He got to his fifty off his 34th ball, and when Boult dropped him at long leg in the 16th over – a sitter off Tim Southee’s bowling – the end looked very near with India needing 23 off 24.But one good over can transform a game, and Boult delivered it, alternating yorkers with short balls into the body to concede just a single in three balls to Pant, before bowling Suryakumar behind his legs. Shreyas Iyer played two dots to end the over, and suddenly India needed 21 off 18 without a set batter at the crease. And much like New Zealand’s innings, India’s ground to a halt, possibly because of the ball growing softer. Ferguson and Southee conceded just 11 off the next 12 balls, the last of which brought the wicket of Shreyas, caught at long-off. And he crossed over with Pant while doing so, leaving the newbie on strike for the last over.We know what happened next, and as tortuous and hair-raising as it was, the Rohit-Dravid era had begun with a win, and India had ended a seven-match losing streak, across formats, against New Zealand.
