Davidson-Richards stars as Yorkshire claim derby honours

Two half-century partnerships at either end of the Yorkshire innings set up a resounding Kia Super League win by 28 runs over Lancashire at Headingley. The Diamonds made the perfect start to this summer’s campaign, posting 162 for 4 and comfortably defending it as the Thunder responded with 134 for 7.Alice Davidson-Richards enjoyed an excellent day with a brisk 22 at the death and then 3 for 20 from four overs of medium pace.Yorkshire captain Lauren Winfield led from the front with 44•Getty Images

Home captain Lauren Winfield, who lost the toss, top-scored with 44 off 43 balls and shared 72 in 11.3 overs for the first wicket with Sri Lanka’s Chamari Atapattu. But it was another England World Cup winner in Katherine Brunt who really boosted the total with a damaging 31.She hit sixes straight and over long-on in a 16-ball assault, sharing 52 in just 4.1 overs for the fourth wicket with Davidson-Richards after the score had fallen to 100 for 3 at the end of the 15th.Lancashire were missing England pair Kate Cross through injury and Sarah Taylor due to a family wedding, and the visitors dropped three catches, including Winfield on 6 and Brunt on 2. Brunt and England Academy’s Davidson-Richards hit the lion’s share of 74 off the last six overs.Davidson-Richards then struck in each of her first three overs to squeeze Lancashire’s chase. Her first two wickets helped leave them 71 for 3 in the 12th over. She bowled Eve Jones with her first ball in the 10th over and had Jess Jonassen caught at deep cover with her ninth ball. When legspinner Katie Levick picked up her second wicket, that of dangerous New Zealander Amy Satterthwaite caught at long-on in the 13th for 28, Yorkshire had the game all but wrapped up at 78 for 4.Levick had made the initial breakthrough to get Emma Lamb caught at backward point, and later bowled Thunder captain Danielle Hazell to finish with 3 for 30. Davidson-Richards then had Natalie Brown stumped as Lancashire fell to 97 for 6. They could not recover. Both these two sides play Surrey Stars in their next match – Yorkshire at The Oval on Sunday evening and Lancashire at Old Trafford on Wednesday afternoon.

Nottingham Forest: Cooper could be set for "problems" as duo eyed

Nottingham Forest pursuing both Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson and Wolverhampton Wanderers stopper Jose Sa 'might open up problems' as it will be hard to keep both players satisfied if one is not getting regular minutes, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Are Dean Henderson and Jose Sa heading to Nottingham Forest?

According to Telegraph Sport, Nottingham Forest are in talks with Henderson over trying to lure him to the club permanently following his loan spell at the City Ground in 2022/23.

Last term, the £100k-a-week earner made 20 appearances for Nottingham Forest in all competitions and managed to keep six clean sheets in total, as per Transfermarkt.

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano recently spoke to GIVEMESPORT regarding Henderson's future, stating: "I think in the end Henderson will become a Nottingham Forest player and they [Manchester United] will bring in a new backup goalkeeper.”

The Telegraph report also states that Wolves goalkeeper Sa, who earns £25,000 per week on the books at Molineux, is another option that the Tricky Trees are evaluating, as Henderson may not be ready to feature from the start of the Premier League season.

In light of interest in Sa, Wolves have turned towards Liverpool substitute goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher as someone who could fill the prospective void between the sticks at the West Midlands-based outfit, according to The Daily Mail.

Kelleher is believed to want to play regularly, which has proved tough to achieve due to the presence of Alisson at Anfield; nevertheless, Liverpool would command a fee of £20 million for the Republic of Ireland international before sanctioning his departure.

Speaking to Football FanCast, transfer insider Jones thinks that bringing both Henderson and Sa to the City Ground this summer could prove problematic if their minutes aren't evenly distributed by Steve Cooper.

Jones told FFC: "In terms of chasing both of these, they really like Dean Henderson and they want him back at the club, but he's not apparently fully ready to start the new season yet and so that's why they're looking at Jose Sa as well right now. If they were to both come in, you're obviously getting to a point later on in the season, one of them is going to be frustrated and that might open up problems that you don't necessarily need for a club of Forest's level."

Who else could Nottingham Forest target this summer?

Nottingham Forest boss Cooper has several targets in his sights as he looks to consolidate his side in the Premier League for a second successive campaign.

Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen has emerged as a target to fill the left-back position at the City Ground; however, the Reds will face competition from top-flight newcomers Burnley, where he spent last season on loan, as per The Athletic.

Dutch outlet HLN via Nottingham Forest News claim that Nottingham Forest will battle with Bournemouth for the signature of Genk captain Bryan Heynen, who is weighing up an exit from his current employers.

The Tricky Trees have also looked at Chelsea forgotten man Callum Hudson-Odoi and Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga as momentum starts to take shape regarding potential incomings at the City Ground, according to a separate report from The Athletic.

Chelsea "Really Pushing" for £34m-Rated "Creative Monster"

Chelsea's backroom staff and scouts are "really pushing" for the club to sign 19-year-old French wonderkid Rayan Cherki from Ligue 1 outfit Lyon as they like the player "an awful lot", per Graham Bailey.

Is Rayan Cherki joining Chelsea?

Chelsea have certainly made the most of the transfer window so far this summer, with practically a full XI of Premier League quality players leaving the club as Mauricio Pochettino oversees a serious squad overhaul.

A number of players, such as N'Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Edouard Mendy, have left West London for the immense riches available in Saudi Arabia, whereas others like Kai Havertz have just moved across London to join Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante.

At this point in time, the only major signing the club have made this summer has been Villarreal striker Nicolas Jackson who cost slightly more than £30m, but another new face could soon join him.

The Blues have been linked to the incredibly exciting Lyon midfielder, Cherki.

American outlet ESPN have reported that the Pensioners have identified the France under-21 star as the perfect 'replacement' for US international Christian Pulisic, who has just been announced as a new AC Milan player.

While Lyon are reluctant to lose their promising youngster, problems around France's own version of financial fair play mean that they would be willing to part with the dynamic midfielder if a club can stump up the €40m (£34m) asking price.

Chelsea's interest in the Lyon-born phenom is primarily being pushed by the club's backroom staff and scouting department, per Graham Bailey.

He explained the situation on the Talking Transfers podcast:

"My understanding is that Chelsea's backroom staff and scouts are really pushing for this, they like him an awful lot. It will be interesting to see where we go here, but Chelsea are pushing forward."

How good is Rayan Cherki?

At just 19 years old, there is already a lot of hype and excitement around Cherki, but from looking at his performances and underlying numbers, it's easy to see why.

According to FBref, who compare players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, the "creative monster" sits in the top 1% for successful take-ons, the top 2% for progressive carries, the top 3% for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for touches in the opposition's penalty area, and the top 6% for expected assists, progressive passes, and progressive passes received, all per 90.

With numbers like that, it should come as no surprise to hear that he had a fantastic season for Lyon last year, with WhoScored giving him an average rating of 6.99 across his 34 Ligue 1 appearances.

Soccer Football – Ligue 1 – Olympique Lyonnais v Olympique de Marseille – Groupama Stadium, Lyon, France – February 1, 2022 Olympique Lyonnais coach Peter Bosz with Rayan Cherki REUTERS/Benoit Tessier

He has clearly caught the attention of former Chelsea star and French international Frank Leboeuf, who waxed lyrical about the 19-year-old on ESPN FC, saying:

"Skill-wise, one of the best players already on earth. He's unbelievable for a 19-year-old. The guy can do everything."

Even with Chelsea's relatively young squad, if they can secure the signature of Cherki, it could end up being one of the summer's best deals, as he could potentially play for the club for over a decade.

Dickwella out of series with hairline fracture

Niroshan Dickwella picked up an injury on Sunday and had trouble holding the bat on Monday

Wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against Bangladesh after suffering a hairline fracture in his left hand.Dickwella had sustained the injury on Sunday, at training. Though it was originally thought to be a minor injury, he had had trouble gripping his bat on Monday. Subsequent X-rays then confirmed the fracture.Team manager Asanka Gurusinha said that while the injury was “minor” it may take “a couple of weeks” to fully heal, which also puts Dickwella in doubt for the T20 internationals that follow the ODIs. Dickwella had also been unavailable for the first ODI of the series, thanks to the suspension he picked up for dissent, during the T20 series in Australia.Though it is a batsman that exits the squad, Sri Lanka have called up offspinner Dilruwan Perera, and strengthened the seam battery through the inclusion of Nuwan Kulasekara and Nuwan Pradeep as well. Those changes are likely a reflection of the outcome of Saturday’s match, in which Sri Lanka’s attack was ineffective – especially at the death overs – as Bangladesh scored 324 in their 90-run win.Kulasekara had played in Sri Lanka’s 0-5 ODI defeat in South Africa in January and February, but had had mixed results in that series. He has 195 ODI wickets, however, and will be the most experienced bowler in the squad by a distance.

Newcastle: Howe Could Bring Next Zidane To St James’ Park

Newcastle United have identified Wolfsburg's Felix Nmecha as a transfer target, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

The latest Newcastle United transfer news – Felix Nmecha identified

Having qualified for Champions League football for the first time in 20 years, Eddie Howe's men have a crucial transfer window ahead of them as they look to bolster the side ready for their return to the promised land.

The Magpies have already been linked with AC Milan's Sandro Tonali, and they're also currently the favourites to land want-away Leicester City superstar, James Maddison.

With Champions League football on the horizon, they won't stop there, though, and the club are keen to continue adding depth to their attack, with Wolfsburg's Nmecha the latest name reported to be on their radar.

"Newcastle has entered the race for Felix Nmecha – confirmed," revealed the German journalist, adding that it was an "open race" to sign him. with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund also mentioned with interest.

The Telegraph, meanwhile, believe Nmecha is available for around £15m.

How does Felix Nmecha compare to Zinedine Zidane?

The former Manchester City prospect has shone since joining the Wolves, with eight goal contributions in 30 Bundesliga games this season and has caught the attention of Newcastle who join Borussia Dortmund in their pursuit of the talented 22-year-old.

As he has made his name in Germany, Nmecha has been favourably compared to the legendary Frenchman, Zinedine Zidane.

While he hasn't come close to matching the former Real Madrid hero's incredible feats in the game, he plays a very similar style of football to Zidane.

Wolfsburg midfielder Felix Nmecha.

Known for his strength on and off the ball, the 22-year-old gem resembles the former Ballon d'Or winner in that sense, with the former Real Madrid and Juventus superstar known for out-muscling opponents and steamrolling through the centre of midfield.

The 22-year-old gem, who was described as an "advanced playmaker" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has fantastic close control that is also similar to the Frenchman's, as well as his calm composure on the ball and his nonchalant ball delivery.

While he's known for his offensive output, Nmecha also likes to get stuck in as well, averaging 1.4 tackles a game in Germany last season, another striking resemblance to Zidane who never shied away from a tackle in the heart of midfield.

Zidane was also known for driving forward with the ball at his feet, and at just 22 years old, the Wolfsburg man has already shown glimpses of that ability, completing 22 progressive carries into the final third of his opponents' areas last season.

According to The Guardian's Rob Smyth, the former Real Madrid man's ball retention skills are probably the best we've ever seen, and while Nmecha certainly isn't as polished or as accomplished as Zidane in that sense, he has shown an ability to carry the ball, and drive through the channels while holding onto possession at an astounding rate. In fact, the German was dispossessed just 13 times last season, a number that will likely only improve as the years go by.

If Newcastle are to make an impact in the Champions League next season and really push forward, signing a player like Nmecha, who has clearly shown shades of what made Zidane such a special talent, would go a long way towards helping Howe's side realise that goal.

Nawaz, fast bowlers seal 201-run victory

Left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz came to the fore on the final day of the warm-up match in Cairns, taking three wickets to help skittle Cricket Australia for 109 in 27.3 overs and complete a 201-run win for the Pakistanis. Rahat Ali and Mohammad Amir took two wickets each, while Wahab Riaz and Azhar Ali claimed one apiece. The lid had been ripped open by the new-ball pair of Rahat and Amir, who reduced CA XI to 4 for 27 in the chase of 311. Nawaz, who had bowled only five overs in the first innings for no wicket, then claimed the wicket of Matthew Short before going on to add the scalp of Arjun Nair, who top scored with 42, to his bag. No other CA XI batsman made more than 20 against the pink ball in the second innings.”For me to express my skills out there was a good opportunity. It felt good out there, decent deck, and to score some runs was a good, positive end to the game,” Nair said. “For me, it’s about building my own game, so getting runs was a good confidence-booster and something for me to work towards in the future. Batting against quality bowlers like Mohammad Amir, top class, and for us to come against those bowlers was a good experience. It’s about taking this experience and learning.”The third and final day of the practice game had begun with the Pakistanis on 5 for 124, with Azhar Ali unbeaten on 44. Azhar went on to make 82 not out and contributions from the lower-middle order took the score to 6 for 216 before the declaration came.”As a batsman, you want to spend time in the middle and get used to the conditions,” Azhar said. “As a bowler, you have got to get used to the lengths according to the pitch, so everyone tried to get the best out of this game.””And, obviously, playing the pink ball in Australia is different to playing in Dubai. During the night, when the lights come on, it starts to do a bit more. I think we are very satisfied with what we got. The wicket was not as quick as we thought it would be, still it was good time in the middle.Azhar also had a word of appreciation for the fielding. “We really worked hard on our fielding. As a team, we want to improve in that regard. Fielding is really important. In Test matches, if you catch well, you generally end up on the winning side.”Cairns has been a lovely experience. The hospitality has been brilliant. We were welcomed here, and obviously enjoyed the game as well. We’re looking forward to the Gabba. Obviously, it will be hard work, but as a batting unit we’re really confident that we have the capability to deliver in these conditions.”The first Test between Pakistan and Australia – a day-night fixture in Brisbane – begins on December 15.

Phillip Hughes inquest to consider health and safety in cricket

The New South Wales Coroners Court will hold a public inquest into the circumstances surrounding the blow that killed Phillip Hughes in a Sheffield Shield match at the SCG in November 2014

Australian cricket is bracing for a grim week as the New South Wales Coroners Court holds a public inquest into the circumstances surrounding the blow that killed Phillip Hughes in a Sheffield Shield match at the SCG in November 2014.Players on the field at the time of the incident, including the likes of Brad Haddin and bowler Sean Abbott, are expected to be among witnesses called to speak. The Hughes family is also expected to be present at the inquest.Hughes’ death has already been the subject of a Cricket Australia-commissioned review, which found that no amount of increased head protection could have changed the course of events. However that review steered clear of issues surrounding the bowling of bouncers and the laws of the game, lines of enquiry expected to be pursued this week.”The State Coroner will examine the manner and cause of death,” a spokesperson for NSW Coroners Court said. “He also has jurisdiction under section 82 of the Coroners Act 2009 (NSW) to make recommendations, particularly in the interest of public health and safety.”Some of the issues that will be examined include how the fatal injury occurred, the nature of play and whether it exacerbated the risk of injury and whether or not a protective helmet would have minimised the risk of Phillip Hughes dying. It will also examine emergency planning and response, as well as training.”At this stage, the State Coroner has not decided whether findings will be handed down at the end of next week.”When the CA review, conducted by David Curtain QC, was handed down, CA chief executive James Sutherland explained how his terms of reference had been limited in order to preserve the fabric of the game.”You’ll see in the brief terms of reference we gave David Curtain that we needed to draw a line about the laws of the game and to have some perspective around that,” Sutherland said. “You can make the game of cricket a lot safer by playing with a tennis ball, but that’s not how Test cricket has been played and it would obviously be a very different game.”We’re not wanting to go there, but we do need to find the right balance in the circumstances to not compromise the way the game’s played and not compromise the way in which the players are best equipped to show their skills.”

Newcastle Plot Swoop For £34m Bundesliga Ace

Newcastle United could look to the summer transfer window to add quality ahead of their return to Champions League football next season and now a reliable source has given an update on a potential target.

What's the latest on Newcastle's interest in Kouadio Kone?

According to journalist Jacque Talbot, Newcastle hold strong interest in signing Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Kouadio 'Manu' Kone this summer.

Talbot revealed to Empire of the Kop (via Caught Offside): "Liverpool and Newcastle are at the table. I think Newcastle’s interest in Kone is quite heavy.

"Kone is certainly one of seven targets I’d say [for Liverpool] and the sounds are about Thuram being further ahead.

"Newcastle are in for him as well, but for some reason the club’s recruitment is pushing for Premier League players."

Would Kone be a good signing for Newcastle?

There is no doubt that Eddie Howe will be thrilled with the amount of expectations that have been exceeded by his talented squad at St James' Park this season.

Nobody could have predicted the consistency and resilience the Magpies have shown over their Premier League campaign and rightfully earned their Champions League spot after conceding the joint-fewest defeats (five) in the entire top flight over 38 fixtures.

Whilst Howe will want to keep the skeleton of his successful squad very much involved in the next chapter for the North East club, it will be important to add in some much-needed quality to bolster key positions on the pitch and strengthen their on-field presence when they compete both domestically and on the European stage next season.

As a result, the signing of Kone could be the perfect opportunity to bring in a player who can comfortably operate in the deepest role in the centre of the pitch, in order to fully unlock Bruno Guimaraes' full potential by giving the Brazilian the freedom to be more creative and present in attacking play.

kouadio-manu-kone-premier-league-newcastle-transfers

Since the departure of Jonjo Shelvey in the January transfer window, Guimaraes has been forced to adopt a much deeper and disciplined position as opposed to the more attacking role he thrived in during his explosive initial six months on Tyneside, but if Kone joins that could be about to change.

The 22-year-old ace – dubbed "outstanding" by journalist Josh Bunting – is renowned for his ability to win and retain possession of the ball whilst comfortably and accurately distributing to build progressive play from his deep-lying role.

As per FBref, Kone ranks in the top 25% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for successful take-ons, progressive carries, pass completion, tackles and blocks, with these dominating attributes leading to football talent scout Jacek Kulig branding him a "one-man army".

Not only that, the Frenchman – who has a reported price tag of €40m (£34m) – has averaged 65.7 touches, 39.5 accurate passes, 1.1 interceptions and won a whopping 7.4 duels per game over his 30 Bundesliga outings this season, further demonstrating that he is consistently a massive presence on the pitch.

With that being said, Kone is a midfielder who possesses the profile that is much-needed in the Newcastle set-up, to not only allow Guimaraes the peace of mind to comfortably push forward in attacking opportunities but add some discipline into midfield to avoid counter-attacking chances taken by opponents.
