Kohli's taunts, and Clarke's surprise

There was no time to get bored in Hyderabad

Atul Bhogle03-Mar-2013Choice of game
It is my dream to watch all days of all Tests in a series. I had already watched three days of the Chennai Test last week and was not going to miss a home Test in Hyderabad, especially against a team other than New Zealand.Team supported
The hurt of the 0-8 overseas losses and then the defeat against England at home was hard to digest. I approached this match hoping India wouldn’t repeat the mistake they made in Mumbai against England. Needless to say, I am rooting for India to go 2-0 up in Hyderabad.Key performer
Michael Clarke again proved to the fulcrum of the Aussie batting and was the only reason Australia lasted the day. But the start performer for me was Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Australia never recovered from those three wickets in the first session. The spinners too would have relished the rare chance of not having to bowl at the openers. One thing I’d have changed
I would have loved to see local boy Pragyan Ojha have a go at the Aussies. Clearly, they were most troubled by Ravindra Jadeja’s left-arm orthodox spin and Ojha would have proved more than handy.Interplay I enjoyed
Clarke came in much earlier than he would have wanted to and immediately began enforcing himself on the spinners. R Ashwin was treated to a huge six down the ground. Clarke’s footwork against the spinners was exemplary. He showed others around him how it’s done.Filling the gaps
VVS Laxman seemed to be giving batting tips to the camera in the company of Ramiz Raja and Kapil Dev during the tea break. He is much loved in Hyderabad, and the crowd was quick to show its appreciation to one of their own.Wow moment
Bhuvneshwar’s inswing to the left-handed Aussie top order was reminiscent of Ajit Agarkar’s efforts against Justin Langer down under. It was heartening to see him pick up wickets after the no-show in Chennai. The wow moment, however, belonged to Jadeja who turned one past Henriques’ outside edge to take the middle stump. The crowd went delirious at the sight of the sight of the disarranged stump.Close encounter
As always, Sachin Tendulkar was the object of the crowd’s affection more than anyone else. The crowd in the eastern stand swarmed around him like bees as he fielded there through the last two sessions. Almost any gesture from him was enough for them to bring the house down with loud cheers. He seemed to be interacting more than usual with the crowd today.Virat Kohli, as in Chennai, kept engaging the crowd when they were quiet – especially in the second session when Clarke and Matthew Wade got stuck into the Indian bowling, encouraging them to get the noise levels up. His way was to taunt the crowd by gesticulating that he couldn’t hear them, and it worked like a charm.Shot of the day
Clarke’s six off Ashwin takes the cake. He did not make a move till the ball was delivered, and when it was, he got to the pitch with lightning quick footwork, and had a lovely arc of the bat to send the ball over the sightscreen.Accessories
Quite simply, the only things we were allowed to carry were wallets and car/bike keys. Mobile phones, banners, and even binoculars were not allowed, which meant we had to walk back almost a kilometre to keep it safe in the car. I spotted an elderly lady using one later on though. Wonder how she got it past the “tight” security.Surprise of the day
If I thought dropping Nathan Lyon and picking two spinners was a puzzling move, Clarke had more in store. His declaration was as surprising as it was innovative. Even some of the Indian fielders seemed taken aback. Many in the crowd thought something had gone wrong due to which play was called off! The crowd was not complaining, though, since it meant fans could watch Virender Sehwag bat, even for only an over.Match experience
The new canopy in Hyderabad’s stadium proved to be a relief, albeit for those lucky enough to be in the southern stands. The catering and other facilities left much to be desired once again. The screen was a disgrace. It was barely 6ft long, which is way too small for a cricket ground, and hardly visible in the sunlight – this when they have as many as two proper-sized “giant” screens for IPL!Marks out of 10
9. The cricket was very good. India dominated the first and third sessions, after Australia had fought back through Clarke and Wade in the second. It has also set up the game beautifully – James Pattinson should enjoy bowling here, and the Indian batting is not the best against express pace of his kind.

Australia struggle despite Mendis' absence

Given Australia’s struggles against Sri Lanka’s mystery spinner in the limited-overs games, it was surprising he was not picked for the Test

Daniel Brettig in Galle31-Aug-2011So much of Australia’s preparation for the first Test revolved around the perceived threat of Ajantha Mendis that the tourists were given something of a shock when they heard he was not part of the team. Alongside Lasith Malinga, who has retired from Tests, Mendis had been responsible for much of the most panicky Australian batting in the limited-overs portion of the tour, and there was still some trepidation on the way to the ground on match morning.Australia’s subsequent progress on the first day in Galle was extremely wobbly on a pitch that tended towards the spiteful, but they were aided by a Sri Lanka team that was curious in its construction. If the tourists’ had sighed with relief when Malinga reiterated his decision to retire from Test cricket at the conclusion of the ODI series, they were whooping with delight to discover that Mendis had been omitted from the Sri Lanka XI.Mendis’ Test match returns have diminished down the years against opponents who have got a proper sight of him but Australia are not one of those teams. While the Australia Twenty20 and ODI sides had plenty of opportunity to sight Mendis’ variations in the fixtures that preceded the Tests, there are five members of the Test team – Phil Hughes, Usman Khawaja, Trent Copeland, Ryan Harris and Nathan Lyon – who have never faced Mendis before. Another, Brad Haddin, seemed no closer to solving his riddles at the end of the ODIs than he had been at the start.Assisted by Mendis’ absence, Australia struggled on via the admirably broad bat of Michael Hussey. Some of the other batsmen, Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting in particular, could be censured for inattentiveness, and their mistakes made Hussey’s contribution all the more spinal. His accomplishment against slow bowling and on subcontinent pitches is clear – since 2008 he has averaged 65.29 when facing the tweakers, soaking up an average of 141.7 balls while doing so – but the variations presented by Herath and the pitch made this a most noteworthy effort.Of those watching from the dressing room, no-one should have been observing Hussey more closely than Khawaja, whose first two balls in subcontinent Test cricket were not for the squeamish. Arriving at the wicket following Ponting’s failure to get to the pitch of a Rangana Herath delivery, Khawaja aimed an expansive drive at his first delivery and could manage only an inside edge into his back pad as the ball turned back at him. Next Herath offered a straighter variation to which Khawaja played for spin and was beaten conclusively on the outside edge. While subcontinent flourishes do exist in Khawaja’s game, he can learn a great deal from Hussey, who began life as a stolid opener and gained an affinity for spin only with time and great care.Hussey’s form entering into the Test had been indifferent, and the observations of the Argus review about selection needing to be based more squarely on performance were clearly made with cases like his in mind. For too long leading into the Ashes, Hussey had been allowed to subsist on inconsistent contributions, and would have been one of several players Simon Katich could have pointed to as proof he should have been persevered with at 35.Nevertheless, the application evident here was equal to that demonstrated by Hussey against England, but the poor showing of most of his fellow batsmen has maintained an unhappiness in the team despite a gap of nine months and a change of captain. With their continued troubles against spin, Australia needed all the help they could get. Mendis’ omission was the closest thing to a charitable gesture.

Outbatted, outbowled, outmatched

It was intimidating to watch. First the openers came out to bat and the heady rhythm of strokes belted out was reminiscent of a manic Keith Moon behind his drum kit. There were 130 runs at five an over in the first session and the rate was maintained later, with 214 runs eventually plundered from 42 overs. It made no difference if it was pace or spin. The leading fast bowler was taken for 72 from his 14 overs, and the spinners were carted for 54 from nine. It would have been exhilarating to watch in a one-day game. As part of a five-day spectacle, it was almost unprecedented.Who else could we talking about but Australia? For more than a decade, while other sides talked of “brave cricket” and then lost their nerve, Australia flattened opponents home and away as a matter of routine. Batsmen came out and walloped 18 runs in the opening over of a series, bowlers thudded deliveries into stumps, helmets and knuckles, and even geriatric stalwarts with avian nicknames threw themselves full-length in the Adelaide outfield to take catches that beggared belief. On Monday morning though, the other side came out swinging and Australia were left bereft of answers. Back in 2001, the juggernaut that had crushed everything in its path for 16 games came to a shuddering halt when India refused to be cowed at Eden Gardens despite the hopeless situation that they found themselves in at the end of day three. By the time the teams reached Chennai for the deciding Test, the aura had gone, and India calmly picked off 510 in response to Australia’s 391 to set up a series win.Since the Ashes were surrendered to an English side that dared to set the tone on an astonishing opening day at Edgbaston, Australia have seldom been challenged. The one time they looked most ill at ease was in Perth last January, when an Indian team seething after the perceived injustices of Sydney pulled off a stunning win at the WACA. Again, someone had wrenched the conducting baton out of Australian hands, and the big boys couldn’t play. His critics can say all that they want to about Mahendra Singh Dhoni being a lucky captain. The toss certainly played a part here, but as his powerful batting displays – such a contrast from the imposter who scratched around at the Chinnaswamy Stadium – have shown, he seems to thrive on the added responsibility. In the first innings, his 92 was the difference between a modest total and an imposing one, and on the fourth morning he decided to trust his shot-making ability after Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir hadpillaged 182.

With the famed middle order looking on, it was a move that would have attracted considerable ridicule if it backfired. Instead, Dhoni thumped 68 from 84 balls, including a six off Cameron White that came to a rest 25 yards inside the field after cannoning into the sightscreen. He made sure India didn’t overdo it either. With runs coming so easily, the batsmen must have been queuing up, but the declaration came well before tea, leaving India with 136 overs to ensure that their dominance of the game was translated into the right result.Australia’s chase was in ruins within 10.2 overs. There had been signs in the morning that they were losing the plot. There was an animated argument between Ricky Ponting and Brett Lee before lunch, presumably something to do with the fact that the leader of the pace pack wasn’t required to bowl until after everyone has finished their and butter chicken. And that simmering rage seemed to afflict the batting as well.Matthew Hayden has never been known for the backward step, but even by his standards, the belligerence shown during a 20-ball 29 was extraordinary. It was as if he wanted to hit every delivery into the cement moat that rings the venue. And it was a reflection of the kind of series that he’s having that he fell to the sweep, the stroke that fetched him hundreds of runs back in 2001.Simon Katich fell to a frankly appalling stroke, while Ricky Ponting got the kind of ball that makes batsmen wake up in a cold sweat. That, and the delivery which darted back to trap Shane Watson in front, crowned a magnificent spell from Ishant Sharma, who must surely now be considered one of the best fast bowlers in the world. India’s pace bowlers now have 18 wickets in the series, while it needed a miscue from Sourav Ganguly to gift Lee his fourth of the series. The times, they certainly are a changin’.

Arsenal told they need ‘more’ than Eberechi Eze to win the Premier League title as new Gunners signing is warned of ‘different pressures’

Arsenal have been warned Eberechi Eze's arrival from Crystal Palace isn't necessarily the missing link in their bid to land the Premier League title.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Crystal Palace and West Ham defender James Tomkins has issued a warning to Arsenal that the high-profile signing of Eze may not prove to be the difference between finishing second and first. The Gunners shocked the football world by hijacking north London rivals Tottenham's expected signing of Eze, with the attacking midfielder hailed as the missing link in Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta's Premier League ambitions. But Tomkins believes the club need even more to take the giant leap to becoming champions.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal will become the first Premier League side to come second four times in a row if they finish runners up again. While Arteta has turned the club from also-rans into genuine title contenders since he took over, they always fall at the final hurdle. They finished ten points behind last season's title winners Liverpool but the arrival of Eze and the nature of how they snatched him right from under Spurs' nose has put a real spring in Arsenal's step.

  • WHAT TOMKINS SAID

Speaking to Boyle Sports, who offer the latest Premier League betting odds, Tomkins said: “He's gone there and he's going to be good for Arsenal, I'm sure. But I think it will take more than just him to win the league now. I do think he will be a big player this year. I think he'll probably need a few games just to kind of get into it, a different style of play, different team, different pressures. He was probably a big fish at Crystal Palace.

"Now he's maybe not as highly regarded as he was at Palace, not the number one player there, whereas everyone was looking at him for goals and everything last season. I think it will just be, again, interesting to see him in the important games. He'll be in the Champions League, and he'll be playing a lot more games this year. It might take a toll on him as well. I think Arsenal are going to be a big threat this year. They could possibly be in the top two; it's just whether they'll go over the line this year. We haven’t seen it the last couple of seasons, so let's see."

    WHAT NEXT FOR EZE?

Eze was brought in on account of his proven Premier League pedigree alongside the unfortunate injury to Kai Havertz. Arsenal have struggled often to break down teams whose sole aim is to stop them playing, particularly at the Emirates, and Eze's job will be to unlock those defences.

Only six players from the T20I squad for the Caribbean and USA tour – Jaiswal, Tilak, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar and Avesh Khan – have been picked in the squad for the Asian Games.Notably, this was the first India call-up for Uttar Pradesh batter Rinku, who had set the IPL alight with his power and finishing skills for Kolkata Knight Riders. Vidarbha and Punjab Kings finisher Jitesh also found a place in the squad after being omitted for the T20Is in the Caribbean and USA. This is also an opportunity for allrounder Washington Sundar and his Sunrisers Hyderabad team-mate Rahul Tripathi to prove their T20 chops again. Both players were part of the home T20I series against New Zealand in February earlier this year, but they were left out for the upcoming T20Is against West Indies. They have been on a steady diet of T20 cricket recently, having turned out in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) and MPL (Maharashtra Premier League). There was no room for Prithvi Shaw, who has been named in West Zone’s squad for the Deodhar Trophy, after which he will travel to the UK for a county stint with Northamptonshire.Bengal and Royal Challengers Bangalore left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed will work with Washington and Bishnoi in the spin attack. Shivam Dube is the only seam-bowling allrounder in the squad though he didn’t bowl a single ball for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023. Dube had hurt his finger while fielding against Mumbai Indians in May and played the IPL knockouts with the injury. He has now recovered sufficiently to be named in both this squad and the West Zone squad for the Deodhar Trophy.Venkatesh Iyer didn’t make it to the Asian Games squad and was part of the list of reserve players, which also included B Sai Sudharsan, who turned heads with a 47-ball 96 for Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023 final against CSK.
