West Ham readying talks with Conceicao alternative to replace Lopetegui

West Ham United officials are ready to open preliminary talks with the agents of a manager, as the Hammers edge towards replacing Julen Lopetegui in the dugout.

Lopetegui "fighting to save job" as West Ham hold internal crisis talks

Reliable journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic backed multiple reports in the press that West Ham held internal talks over Lopetegui’s future on Wednesday, with pressure intensely growing on the Spaniard.

Steidten holds talks with new manager and wants Lopetegui out of West Ham

The German is personally in favour of a change.

It has been a woeful start to the Premier League campaign for West Ham, who have won just four times in 14 league games, despite spending north of £120 million on new additions in the summer transfer window.

The Irons have also been thumped 5-2 by Arsenal and 3-1 by Leicester City in the space of five days, piling pressure on Lopetegui who is now “fighting to save his job”, according to Ornstein.

West Ham, led by technical director Tim Steidten, are now assessing alternative candidates for the managerial position – should they indeed decide to hand Lopetegui his P45 amid calls for his removal.

Steidten has held talks with Edin Terzic, according to GiveMeSport, and is personally in favour of sacking West Ham’s current manager after their lacklustre start to the 2024/2025 campaign.

Meanwhile, it is also believed that ex-Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri is contending for the West Ham job, while former FC Porto boss Conceicao is keen on replacing Lopetegui after leaving the Primeira Liga giants earlier this year.

There are a few high-profile options if David Sullivan and co decide to make the decision and sack Lopetegui, but there is another candidate who is now reportedly entering pole position for the West Ham hot seat.

West Ham ready to open talks with Graham Potter to replace Julen Lopetegui

Indeed, that man is former Chelsea and Brighton head coach Graham Potter.

The Englishman, who also sensationally guided Swedish minnows Ostersunds FK to the Europa League after successive promotions from the fourth tier, has been without a job since his sacking by Chelsea.

Graham Potter as Chelsea manager

The 49-year-old is now entering the mix to succeed Lopetegui, as Football Insider share that West Ham are ready to open preliminary talks with Potter, who is said to be emerging as the lead contender.

Potter is apparently “ahead of Conceicao” in the race, with West Ham now prepared to advance their interest in the tactician in their pursuit of a new boss.

Dyche needed to axe Everton star in the summer but now he’s undroppable

Everton may have avoided relegation by 14 points last season, but it was hardly one to remember for the Toffees as they finished 15th in the Premier League.

Things aren’t exactly going much better this term either for Sean Dyche’s men, who have won just twice in the top flight.

Many players who Dyche was hoping to rely on have failed to deliver. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored just two goals all season, while defender Michael Keane has started nine of the club’s 11 league games due to Jarrad Branthwaite’s injury issues.

A few have shone, and they could be the reason for Everton retaining their top-flight status for another season.

Everton’s best performers this season

Dwight McNeil has been excellent in a number 10 role, scoring three goals and supplying three assists in the Premier League, shining under Dyche this term. Iliman Ndiaye has also scored three goals for the club and the presence of these two in the final third has given the Merseyside faithful some hope.

Dwight McNeil for Everton

With Orel Mangala and Abdoulaye Dououre running things in midfield, there are plenty of positives for Everton, that’s for sure. The key thing now is to string a run of victories together to move up the table.

One of the surprise hits of the campaign, however, has been the form of Ashley Young, who has performed excellently at right-back for the club.

Ashley Young’s statistics this season

Last season, Young made 31 league appearances for the Toffees. Despite missing only seven games, he ranked in the bottom 50% of positionally similar players in Europe for tackles, interceptions, aerial duels won and progressive passes per 90 last season.

It was clear that he was underperforming and while earning £40k-per-week in the process, a wage that Dyche would have liked to get off the bill, he should have been out the door.

He wasn’t released during the summer, remaining at the club after penning a new deal, and with Nathan Patterson struggling with injury, Young became the first choice at right-back.

The 29-year-old has started all but two of the club’s top-flight games this season, registering three assists in that time, enjoying somewhat of a resurgence for Everton.

Among the first-team squad, Young currently ranks second for assists (3), fourth for accurate passes per game (27.6), second for key passes per game (1.4) and fourth for tackles per match (2.4), demonstrating how effective he has been for the team this term.

Ashley Young looks dejected for Everton

The veteran defender has certainly established himself in the starting XI and, given how good he has been recently, is Young becoming undroppable?

Patterson may be the long-term option on the right side of the defence, but it appears as though the former Manchester United star has this position sewn up at present.

There is no doubt Young is enjoying an Indian summer this campaign, and it will be interesting to see if his form continues when the domestic calendar returns.

The Kickoff: Can Wilfried Zaha stay hot for Charlotte FC? Are the Philadelphia Union real contenders? MLS Matchday 3 preview

GOAL takes a look at some key storylines heading into the third Matchday of MLS action in 2025

Two weeks of MLS action are officially in the book, and although it's early, things are starting to take shape and competitors are beginning to emerge. The Columbus Crew are still at the top, while the Philadelphia Union, San Jose Earthquakes, LAFC, and Vancouver Whitecaps join as them as the only unbeaten teams left across MLS.

Reigning champions LA Galaxy are winless through two games, while Supporters' Shield holders Inter Miami sit at four points through two Matchdays — but are sporting an unwanted trend, with a red card in each of their MLS showings so far this season. Lucky for them, though, their second — handed to Ian Fray — was rescinded by the independent review panel.

Meanwhile, Charlotte FC also sit on four points — but broke out on Matchday 2 with the emergence of Designate Player and Ivory Coast international Wilfried Zaha, who sparked them to a 2-0 victory over rivals Atlanta United. Can he stay hot, and can CLT continue their winning ways?

Staying in the Eastern Conference, the Union have arguably been MLS' biggest surprise this season so far, and striker Tai Baribo leads the league in scoring with five goals already this season. What is Bradley Carnell cooking, and can their Israeli star keep up his goal-scoring heroics — or is it an early-season fluke?

Then, in the West, there is the Whitecaps. Nobody saw this coming.

New head coach Jesper Sorensen has them 2-0, and they're coming off a big win over the Galaxy. However, after a midweek draw in the CONCACAF Champions Cup to Liga MX heavyweights CF Monterrey, will their legs be tired or can they overcome adversity to stay unbeaten?

GOAL dives into all that and more in The Kickoff, a weekly preview of each MLS Matchday.

After leading Charlotte FC to a 2-0 victory over Atlanta United, fans quite literally crowned Wilfried Zaha. The Ivorian striker was seated on a throne in the Supporters' Section — Game of Thrones style. It was a moment that felt both niche and uniquely “American sports,” but more importantly, it felt like the beginning of something special for Charlotte. A true coronation. Their superstar had arrived.

“He’s the type of player we were missing last season, for sure,” head coach Dean Smith said of Zaha. “We saw in one performance today that he can produce moments of magic.”

For his part, Zaha made it clear this was only the beginning.

“I think it's a statement,” he told MLS Season Pass after the win. “Me coming here to score goals, the whole team working hard, and us taking our opportunities—it shows every other team in the league that we mean business this season.”

And business they mean.

Charlotte opened the season by grinding out a road point at one of the league’s toughest venues, Lumen Field, against the Seattle Sounders. Then, they followed it up by taking down Atlanta, the “Playoff Dragon Slayers” of 2024. Now, they face their biggest challenge yet in Matchday 3: the dragons themselves—Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.

While Messi’s fitness remains uncertain, the Herons still boast a roster capable of wreaking havoc, as the Houston Dynamo learned the hard way last weekend. For Charlotte, it will take a full 90-minute effort, with Zaha leading the charge alongside U.S. internationals Patrick Agyemang and Tim Ream, both of whom will have major roles to play as look to stay unbeaten.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportCarnell in the kitchen: Union's boss has Philly cooking

When Bradley Carnell was appointed Philadelphia Union manager in the offseason, plenty of questions surrounded the hire — the biggest among them: Could he handle a job of this magnitude? He was taking over a club in a rough patch, yet one with a strong track record of developing young talent and maximizing transfers on a limited budget.

Two weeks in, the answer is a resounding yes.

The Union have opened the season with back-to-back wins over Eastern Conference playoff contenders, scoring four goals in each match. They lead MLS in scoring and boast the league’s current Golden Boot leader, Tai Baribo.

The Israeli striker, meanwhile, has outscored 23 of MLS’ 30 teams on his own through two weeks. You read that right — one player has more goals than 23 entire squads.

His scoring rate is unprecedented, and while it’s unlikely to be sustainable over a grueling 40-plus game season across all competitions, the 27-year-old has been electric in the final third.

This weekend, the Union have a chance to make history. A win over the New England Revolution could make them just the fourth team in MLS history to achieve a plus-8 goal differential through the first three matches, joining the 1999 Chicago Fire, 2017 Atlanta United, and 2022 Austin FC — each of whom finished in the top four of the Supporters' Shield standings.

Getty Images SportWhite and the Whitecaps peaking

Although it sounds like an Indie Rock Band from 2013, White and the Whitecaps are playing sensational soccer at the moment — with the U.S. international leading the line in their new attack under the guidance of Sorensen.

One of three teams in the West with six points to start the season, the Whitecaps have displayed exemplary poise, patience and control in their game to start the campaign. It took them until the 87th minute to defeat the Galaxy on Matchday 2, but it wasn't a shocking result by any means; they dominated the reigning champions in all areas of the pitch.

White, meanwhile, is off to a brilliant start this season with three goals in four appearances across all competitions for Vancouver. Although he's only netted once in MLS play he's been stupendous in the final-third with hold-up play, and drawing defenders out of position allowing his teammates to get into the box to score. He's quietly become one of MLS' most consistent forwards, with 15 goals in each of his last MLS domestic campaigns.

We can't mention Vancouver without touching on the emergence of Canada international Jayden Nelson, either, though. The 22-year-old recorded three assists and a goal on Matchday 1, and in the win over the Galaxy, he logged 62 minutes while registering two shots on target. An offseason acquisition, he's instantly become a crucial part of their attack.

Matchday 3 arrives against Canadian rivals CF Montreal, who are seeking their first points of the season on the road against Vancouver. If the Whitecaps can manage a victory over a struggling rival after their midweek Champions Cup match against CF Monterrey, it will be an impressive feat for Sorensen, who is already being tested with match congestion three weeks into the campaign.

de Kock in the runs; North West and Western Province set the early pace

CSA T20 round-up: Boland and Knights are yet to get off the mark

Firdose Moonda11-Feb-2022North West have emerged as frontrunners at the CSA T20 tournament with two victories, including a bonus-point win, in the opening week of the tournament. They are a point ahead of Western Province, who also triumphed in both their matches, and five clear of the Dolphins, Lions, Titans and Warriors, all of whom won one each. Boland and the Knights are yet to register a win. Here are the highlights from the first round:North-West crush troubled KnightsAfter the semi-final between these two teams in the CSA T20 knockout earlier in the season was washed out, with the Knights advancing to the final and eventually claiming the trophy, North West exacted sweet revenge with an eight-wicket victory on Thursday. North West’s attack, which included ODI allrounder Dwaine Pretorius (1/13) and two-time Test cap Senuran Muthusamy (2/8), kept the Knights to 95 for 9 in 20 overs. Wesley Marshall’s 29-ball 43 and an opening stand of 69 ensured the result was never in doubt. Pretorius finished things off in the 11th over, to give North West an eight-wicket win.The loss speaks to broader problems for the Knights, who are struggling without marquee batter Rilee Rossouw, who is at the PSL. They hold the two lowest first-innings scores in the competition so far, after their opening match against the Dolphins saw them post just 128 for 5. All eyes will be on Raynard van Tonder, Farhaan Behardien and Pite van Biljon to see if Knights improve next week.North West, meanwhile, also beat their neighbours, the Lions, by defending 136. Their most successful bowler so far is left-arm spinner Johannes Diseko, who is the joint-leading wicket-taker and has the best economy rate among the leading 10 bowlers. De Kock, Levi, Lubbe in the runs His retirement from Test cricket means Quinton de Kock is not with the national side in New Zealand and available for the Titans as he focuses solely on white-ball fixtures. His campaign began with a first ball duck against the Warriors, who went on to defend 163 on the opening day. But de Kock quickly turned things around, scoring 72 off 61 balls and sharing in a 106-run opening stand with Gihahn Cloete to help Titans get to 158 for 2 against Boland. In what was the game of the round, Janneman and Pieter Malan got Boland off to a good start with 69 runs inside eight overs, then lost 3 for 29 before Under-19 World Cup returnee Michael Copeland hit a 39-ball 33. But then they lost three wickets for two runs and finally fell three runs short of victory. Junior Dala took two wickets in three balls in the penultimate over to leave Ayabulele Gqamane 11 to defend in the last over.Boland’s week went poorly after they also lost to Western Province, who chased 143 with little trouble. Richard Levi set the tone with 67 from 39 balls and then helped Western Province to victory over the Warriors as well when his 17-ball 40 provided the foundation to chase the highest total of the week: 164. Levi is the second highest run-scorer in the competition, with the highest strike rate.Wihan Lubbe leads the run-charts, 18 ahead of Levi, with two half-centuries. He scored 69* against Western Province and 56, in a winning cause, against the Titans.

Over 2,000 UK residents have been surveyed by OBLG in a bid to discover the Premier League's most hated team. And, despite recent struggles, it's Manchester United who top the list with over 15% of respondents voting for the Red Devils. Next up are Premier League leaders Liverpool with an 8.45% share of the vote, followed by Manchester City (7.7%) and then Arsenal (7.4%).

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United have long been hated by rival Premier League fans due to their status as one of the biggest clubs in the world and after an era of dominance under Sir Alex Ferguson. The Red Devils won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues under the legendary Scot. Rivals Liverpool are also deeply unpopular, and enjoyed huge success in the 1980s, while Manchester City's recent trophy-laden spell and alleged breaches of FFP rules ensure many younger supporters despise Pep Guardiola's side.

The Premier League's least hated teams are, perhaps unsurprisingly, sides currently sitting in the bottom half of the table. Wolves top the list of the least hated on 0.70%, Brentford are next (0.85%) and Ipswich Town (1.00%) are third.

"My contract ends in 2025" – Raúl Jiménez hints at Fulham deal extension

A Fulham “leader” is now keen on extending his stay at Craven Cottage in 2025, according to an encouraging update regarding his future.

Fulham prepare for trip to Everton

Marco Silva’s side have enjoyed a solid start to their 2024/25 Premier League season, almost going under the radar amid battles at the top and bottom of the table. Fulham currently sit in 10th position, having picked up 11 points from their eight league matches to date, and the hope now is that the west Londoners can go up another level and push for a European finish in the coming months.

Fulham manager Marco Silva.

Next up for the Cottagers is a trip to Everton on Saturday evening, as they come up against a Blues outfit who have sparked into life after a terrible start to the campaign, accumulating seven points from their last three matches and allowing Sean Dyche to keep his job.

This promises to be a big test for Fulham, especially under the lights of an atmospheric and bullish Goodison Park, and victory for the visitors would feel like a big step in the right direction, further suggesting that a top-half finish could be on the cards come next May. Now, a positive update has emerged regarding the future of an important player.

Fulham "leader" wants to sign new deal

Speaking to Clara Sports [via Sport Witness], Raul Jimenez says he’s keen on a contract extension at Fulham, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2025: “My contract ends in 2025, but there is the option to renew for another year. That option is with the club. I hope to make it valid for as long as I can stay in Europe, and I welcome that.”

This is fantastic news for anyone of a Fulham persuasion, considering what a top-level player Jimenez remains, scoring four goals in just five Premier League starts this season. He has also chipped in with one assist, while his worth at international level with Mexico has been highlighted, too, with manager Javier Aguirre recently heaping praise on him.

“He came back very well [from his injury], very well. He’s scored goals, he’s made assists. He looks mature and in good form, having completely overcome his injury. I think he is definitely a leader for us. A very important player for us.”

There will have been fears when Jimenez suffered a potentially life-threatening head injury away to Arsenal back in 2020, in terms of him never returning to his best again, or even playing football again. The Mexican icon has been fantastic in the years since, though, still going strong at the age of 33 and proving to be an influential performer for Fulham.

For that reason, the £100,000-a-week Jimenez signing an extension would be superb news for the Cottagers, retaining the services of a player who has now proven his worth in the Premier Leage for many years now, as he continues to catch the eye.

Arteta must boldly drop Sterling and start Arsenal’s "sensational" jewel

After a gruelling game against the defending Champions in the Premier League last weekend, Arsenal were tasked with a far simpler job on Wednesday night: taking on League One side Bolton Wanderers in the League Cup.

Now, the Lancashire outfit did score at the Emirates, but even with the eight changes Mikel Arteta made to his side, it was an easy day at the office for the North Londoners.

The likes of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly rightfully stole the show and should make more first-team appearances as the season goes on, but there was another star making his full debut on the night who put in a good shift, Raheem Sterling.

Yes, the former Manchester City ace finally got his chance to start for the Gunners, and the manager will have been pleased with what he saw, yet even so, for the game against Leicester City this weekend, he should be dropped back to the bench.

Why Sterling should be dropped

Okay, so the first thing to clear up is that, as we mentioned above, Sterling was reasonably impressive against Bolton on Wednesday night.

The international veteran provided the pass for Nwaneri’s first goal and scored one himself in the second half, which is a commendable return on a full debut.

The 29-year-old certainly impressed football.london’s chief Arsenal writer, Kaya Kaynak, who gave him an 8/10 on the night, writing that once he got going, he was a ‘real threat’ down that left-hand side.

However, as effective as he was when he got up to speed, the nature of the game means that unless he scored a hat-trick and picked up a hat-trick of assists, it’s just not enough to force his way into the starting lineup for a Premier League game.

Moreover, with an avalanche of games in the next few months, Arteta will need a fit and firing squad, full of quality players who can step in for games that might not be deemed too important, like Wednesday night.

Now, should Sterling continue his impressive form in his ensuing appearances off the bench, then the calls to start him in the league may begin to grow, but at the moment, it would be premature, and the player who should start on the weekend was one of Arsenal’s best against City.

Why Gabriel Martinelli should start

Yes, despite his goal and assist against Bolton, Sterling should make way for Gabriel Martinelli to come back into the team tomorrow afternoon.

Now, nobody can deny that it has been a tough start to the campaign for the former Ituano gem, but his performance against City on Sunday evening was exemplary and showed that there is still an immensely useful player there and one Arteta should persevere with for a bit longer.

In the first half, the Brazilian dynamo demonstrated that he can still be an attacking threat with the right supporting cast behind him, as it was his run and pass that allowed Riccardo Calafiori to score his wonder goal, and towards the end of the first 45, he was getting some real joy down the flank.

However, in the second half, the “sensational” 23-year-old, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, really stood out as a selfless and incredibly hard-working team player.

Thanks to him being that bit faster than Bukayo Saka, the manager opted to keep him on the pitch following Leandro Trossard’s red card to act as an outlet for the side, and while he did do that at times, his desire to defend, put himself in the way and run himself into the ground stood out.

Moreover, with a run of slightly easier league games to come in the next month or so, Arteta should give him a chance to rediscover his goalscoring form, as if he can get back to the sort of numbers he was producing in the 22/23 campaign when he scored 15 goals and provided six assists, then Arsenal will have a seriously dangerous attacker on their hands once again.

Ultimately, Sterling did well on Wednesday night, but given the level of opposition and the fact that Martinelli was massively important to the draw against City, the former should make way for the latter tomorrow afternoon.

The deal, reported worth £300,000 per week, is aimed at securing the 26-year-old’s long-term future at Anfield. However, the competition is fierce, as Madrid are ready to match Liverpool's terms while also including a significant signing bonus if Alexander-Arnold joins them as a free agent in the summer.

The enticing offers have left Alexander-Arnold facing a tough decision. On one side is Liverpool, his hometown club, where he has blossomed into a global footballing icon and remains a fan favourite. Staying would provide him the opportunity to cement his legacy as a Kop legend, while also earning £78 million ($97m) over the course of the new deal on offer. On the other side is Real Madrid, one of the most prestigious clubs in the world, offering the allure of becoming a "Galactico" and a chance to play alongside his close friend Jude Bellingham.

Liverpool’s management believes they have done everything within their power to persuade Alexander-Arnold to stay. The proposed deal represents the club's commitment to keeping him through the prime years of his career. Although no official demands for the captaincy have been made, Alexander-Arnold is seen as the natural successor to Virgil van Dijk, a testament to his leadership qualities and his value to the team.

Madrid, eager to bring the England international to the Bernabeu, have reportedly prepared a £20m ($25m) bid to secure his services in January, despite the fact that he would hit free agency in the summer. Nonetheless, the defender is reportedly against making a mid-season move and is reluctant to disrupt Liverpool’s momentum in what could be a title-winning campaign for Arne Slot's side.

Poch sold Spurs flop for £4.5m in 2019, now he’s outscoring Richarlison

After a campaign full of ups and downs last season, it appears as if Tottenham Hotspur fans are in for more of the same this year.

Ange Postecoglou's men have kicked off the Premier League in an unconvincing manner so far, dropping two points away to Leicester City and three to Newcastle United.

The North Londoners were able to utterly dominate Everton, but the Toffees have been exceedingly poor thus far, meaning they are hardly the barometer for measuring this Lilywhites side.

Granted, the club's £65m striker, Dominic Solanke, has missed the last two games, and the £60m Richarlison is also out injured. However, it seems unlikely that the Brazilian ever be the player fans were hoping he'd be in North London, especially when he's being outscored by a former Tottenham flop.

Just over two years ago, Spurs spent around £60m to get Richarlison out of Everton after he had scored 11 goals and provided five assists in just 33 games for the Toffees the season prior, and while he's shown glimpses of quality since then, it would be fair to say that they paid too much.

For example, in his first campaign with the Lilywhites, the former Watford ace could only muster a return of three goals and four assists in 35 appearances, equating to a poor average of a goal involvement every five games.

To his credit, the Brazilian international did improve last season in Harry Kane's absence, scoring 12 goals and providing four assists in just 31 appearances. However, this clearly wasn't enough to convince the club that he could lead the line going forward, as they went out and signed Solanke last month.

Richarlison looks agonised for Tottenham

In all, Richarlison is a talented player, but he has not been able to establish himself as an essential player for Spurs, and considering he's being outscored by a former flop who left five years ago, it's not looking good for his long-term future in N17.

Georges-Kévin N'Koudou's recent form

The former Spurs flop in question is Cameroon international Georges-Kévin N'Koudou, who joined the club from Marseille in September 2016 for a fee of around £11m.

Kevin N'Koudou for Tottenham.

The left-winger made very little impact in N17 and was sold to Beskitas by Mauricio Pochettino for £4.5m just three years later. He left the Lilywhites with just 27 appearances, one goal, and two assists to his name.

After spending a few years in Turkey, the Versailles-born dynamo made the switch to Saudi Pro League side Damac FC last summer, where he has since been playing very well indeed.

In fact, the 29-year-old wideman outscored Richarlison last season, racking up a respectable tally of 15 goals and five assists in 33 matches, meaning he averaged a goal involvement once every 1.65 games for the Middle Eastern club.

Now the important caveat here is that the quality of opposition is obviously far lower in Saudi Arabia. However, we have seen big names make the move over there and struggle, so it's still impressive from the former Spurs flop.

Ultimately, selling N'Koudou in 2019 was the right thing to do for all parties involved, but perhaps his successful departure from the club should give Richarlison some ideas, unless he can dramatically improve his form in the coming months.
