Rashford upgrade: Man Utd to bid for "one of the best players in the PL"

Ruben Amorim’s first six weeks in charge of Manchester United certainly haven’t been as easy as he would have anticipated, but it appears as though his ideas are finally coming to fruition.

The 39-year-old may have only won two Premier League matches to date, but managed to produce a much-improved display against league leaders Liverpool on Sunday to stop a run of four straight defeats.

Goals from Lisandro Martínez and Amad Diallo secured an unexpected point given the Reds’ imperious home form, with the 3-4-2-1 system starting to look effective in all areas of the pitch.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorim looks dejected

Despite the results, the January transfer window presents the first opportunity for the new boss to bolster his ranks, with various areas in need of drastic investment to take the club back to its glory days.

One area in particular could be heavily improved, with various names already mentioned over a move to Old Trafford, including one who’s set England’s top flight alight in recent months.

Man Utd to make £42m offer for PL star

According to one Spanish outlet, Man Utd are willing to make a €50m (£42m) bid to land Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo before the end of the January window.

The 25-year-old has been in superb form for Thomas Frank’s side in 2024/25, scoring 13 times in 20 appearances, with only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah scoring more to date.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoin action with Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly and Gabriel Magalhaes

However, the Bees would be reluctant to part ways with the star man this window, but the report claims that the United hierarchy see the Cameroonian as the solution to their attacking issues.

He can operate in a variety of attacking roles, whether that be central, as a ten or off either flank – which could make him the perfect fit for Amorim’s current philosophy.

He certainly would provide an upgrade on one player currently plying his trade at Old Trafford, potentially ending his long-standing affiliation with the club in the process.

Why Mbeumo would be an upgrade on Rashford

Academy graduate Marcus Rashford looked as though he would be a crucial player during Amorim’s tenure at the helm after netting three times in his opening two matches under the new boss.

However, it looks as though his time with his boyhood club could be coming to an end in the near future after his recent exclusions from the first-team squad.

The Englishman hasn’t made an appearance for the Red Devils since the Europa League win over Viktoria Plzen back in the first week of December, failing to feature in any of the last six outings in all competitions.

Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Juventus are just three sides interested in signing the 27-year-old this window, opening the door for a potential move for Mbeumo.

The Brentford ace has massively outperformed Rashford in numerous key areas during 2024/25, highlighting what a superb addition he would be – even if he may cost a pretty penny in the process.

Mbeumo, who’s been dubbed “one of the best players in the Premier League” by pundit Dan Bardell, has outscored the current United forward, whilst also averaging more progressive carries and passes – highlighting his ability in the final third.

On top of that, the Brentford star has completed more take-ons in 2024/25, whilst winning more aerials, further showcasing his talent to feature in a variety of different roles should Amorim complete a deal for his signature.

There’s no debating that signings are desperately needed at Old Trafford if the Red Devils are to salvage anything from the current campaign, but it’s crucial that any additions are smart and not just for the sake of it.

The Cameroonian is a player who could thrive should he move to the North West, having all the tools to be a success under the guidance of the former Sporting CP manager.

£42m is a phenomenal price for a player of his calibre, subsequently handing the side the new dimension of attacker they’ve desperately been craving for in recent months.

Pereira must now unleash Wolves star who Man United want to sign

Vitor Pereira got off to a dream start in the Wolverhampton Wanderers hot-seat last match as his new Old Gold side demolished Leicester City 3-0 away from home.

Now, the Portuguese manager faces his first test in the Premier League at Molineux, hopeful that he can make it two victories from two against a severely damaged Manchester United team.

He will be well aware that this could be a tougher examination of his side too, regardless of the Red Devils’ recent woes, but will pray that his top performers at the King Power Stadium come up trumps again.

Best Wolves performers vs Leicester

Looking back on the comprehensive win versus Ruud van Nistelrooy’s lacklustre hosts, it was a perfect first introduction to the English game for Pereira, as a number of lineup changes worked wonders.

Bringing Goncalo Guedes back into the first team fold was one of those inspired alterations, as the 28-year-old fired home this first-time volley to gift Wolves an early 1-0 lead after Nelson Semedo found him ready to pounce.

Moreover, starting Rodrigo Gomes also paid off big time for Pereira, as the exciting 21-year-old made it 2-0 not long after Guedes’ heroics.

The ex-Al Shabab boss was also rewarded with not switching up the XI too much away from Gary O’Neil’s final outing, with Jose Sa managing to make four saves to pick up a rare clean sheet, whilst Santiago Bueno’s shaky side was nowhere to be seen in the heart of defence when successfully winning four duels.

But, there’s a name that hasn’t been mentioned yet that Pereira will hope can terrorise a charitable Red Devils defence on Boxing Day, who also shone brightly during the new manager’s first league contest.

The Wolves star who Man Utd wanted to sign

Whilst Matheus Cunha did wrap up the three points last time out with a late goal, it wasn’t quite the Brazilian’s most electric performance of the campaign to date, having been an absolute nuisance for Premier League defences to contain all season long.

Cunha will be confident he can toy with Ruben Amorim’s side all afternoon based on Man United’s recent lax defending, which has seen them concede 12 goals across their last five matches in all competitions.

In addition to that, despite Wolves’ worrying position near the foot of the Premier League table, they can also brag a higher amount of goals scored than their out-of-sorts opponents, with 27 strikes bagged next to Man United’s lower 21.

Cunha has, of course, netted nine of those, with his entire Old Gold goal tally standing at 25 now after an impressive 2023/24 season also saw him light up the top-flight with 22 goal contributions notched up.

He looks set to eclipse that amount this campaign, with his ex-manager in O’Neil one to always shower him with praise, having labelled his number ten as “incredible” after he had helped himself to a brace versus Fulham in late November.

Therefore, he will be eager to impress Pereira on Boxing Day to gain even more praise, with an added spice put into the mix when you consider Cunha is reportedly being eyed up by Amorim’s men as a statement buy this January.

Before the busy transfer window swings open, however, the former Atleti star will be fully concentrating on further hurting Man United’s ego, which could well see the new Wolves boss pick up another win subsequently.

Agents preparing to open talks with Chelsea over signing £195k-per-week ace

Intermediaries are set to open talks with Chelsea and ask them about the possibility of signing a “top, top” player in January, coming amid the uncertain futures surrounding members of Enzo Maresca’s squad.

Chelsea face Aston Villa with refreshed squad after Conference League rotation

Maresca’s B-team faced off against Bundesliga side Heidenheim in the Conference League on Thursday, beating the German minnows 2-0 and leaving Chelsea’s first team refreshed ahead of their bout with Aston Villa on Sunday.

Both sides are competing for a place in the Premier League’s top four by the end of this campaign and all the riches that come with qualification for the Champions League.

Unai Emery’s side haven’t won a single game in all competitions since late October, with Chelsea going into their clash at Stamford Bridge in much more favourable form, alongside the added bonus of selecting fresher stars who’ve had a full week’s rest.

The only Chelsea player to start against Heidenheim, days after their 2-1 win over Leicester City last weekend, was Benoit Badiashile. Apart from the Frenchman, the entirety of their XI against the Foxes got a chance to recuperate ahead of Villa tomorrow.

However, Maresca appeared to suggest in his pre-match press conference that it is not an advantage by any means.

“It depends. You can also say they play yesterday [Wednesday] and we play tonight [Thursday]. We arrive [home] very late and it is already Friday,” said Maresca on Chelsea’s ability to rotate.

“For sure, we change players but hopefully we can do this all season because imagine if we didn’t have the chance to change players. You arrive late, it’s not easy and especially the strange thing, sometimes you play tomorrow on Friday and then play Thursday and on Sunday. Southampton, they don’t play any European competition.

“This is not something normal. We have two days after Sunday’s game and they have almost a week, six days – this is something not normal. But we are going to try and prepare the game in the best way and try to win.”

£195,000-per-week forward Christopher Nkunku has featured predominantly in the Conference League, with his goal against Heidenheim adding to the 10 strikes he’d accumulated in all competitions this season.

Agents preparing to open talks with Chelsea over signing Nkunku

In the build-up to their clash with Heidenheim, Maresca ruled out selling Nkunku in January, despite reports linking the France international with a winter move away amid his lack of chances in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old, called a “top, top striker”, has scored 11 in total this campaign but finds himself behind Nicolas Jackson in the pecking order.

Regardless of their firm ‘not for sale’ stance in the winter, GiveMeSport reported this week that agents are preparing to ask Chelsea about signing Nkunku as the west Londoners become braced for enquiries.

Following on from Maresca’s public admission, Nkunku apparently won’t be pushing for an exit behind the scenes, nor will Chelsea entertain any such bid for his services, but that won’t stop clubs from trying to test their resolve in an effort to lure him away from the Bridge.

The Rondo: Does MLS have a Lionel Messi 'load management' problem, with Inter Miami resting their superstar – and disappointing fans – due to a 'congested schedule'?

GOAL US writers discuss Messi missing Miami's game with Houston, and whether opposing MLS teams are right to make amends to fans

Lionel Messi made headlines last week when Inter Miami announced that he would not travel to Houston for their Sunday night MLS fixture with the Dynamo. Cue the panic from the soccer world. Social media lost its collective mind. Reddit got all petty.

And then, there were the Dynamo themselves, who released an official statement, acknowledging disappointed fans and giving away free tickets to fans for upcoming games to make amends.

Messi was not injured but was rather held out by Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano due to Miami’s "congested schedule" – in NBA terms, it would be considered "load management." The team had played at midweek and on the weekend for each of the past two weeks, both in MLS and CONCACAF Champions Cup matches. Since joining Inter Miami in July 2023, Messi has occasionally been rested during congested periods of play.

It all felt a bit silly, really. After all, it was one athlete, missing one game, for a fairly rational reason. But it does also raise natural questions. Messi probably can't play 40+ games per season stay fit.

Should fans expect him to – especially opposing fans who want to see the 37-year-old superstar play in their stadium? Is it fair to him? Should the best player to ever do it spend what could be his last season worrying about injury?

And then there are the clubs. The Dynamo won't be the last away team that Messi "cancels" on this season. Do they then owe their fans if he doesn't show, a decision controlled by Miami, not the host club? Should MLS intervene, as the NBA did when load management got out of control and multiple superstars missed games, launching a new Player Participation Policy for the 2023-24 season?

These are all interesting questions, simmering in the background since Messi first came to MLS .

GOAL US writers debate them all in a load management edition of… The Rondo.

GettyIs Miami right to rest Messi for some away games?

Tom Hindle: For the vibes? No. But for reality? Yes. They have a championship to win. Messi can't play 40+ games for his club, and then international friendlies and other competitions such as the Champions Cup and Club World Cup. Some have got to go, and if that means he misses a fixture against a Houston team, then so be it. Honestly? Get over it, lads.

Jacob Schneider: We are one week into the season. Rest? It's nothing short of pathetic. One week.

Ryan Tolmich: From a purely Miami perspective, absolutely. The Herons are spread thin across multiple competitions but, ultimately, will only be judged on how they handle the one at the very end of the year. If they don't win MLS Cup, they will have failed. Knowing that, they have to do whatever it takes to build Messi towards that, even if that means dropping some points or disappointing some opposing fans along the way. It stinks, but it's reality: Miami's interests are furthered by keeping Messi healthy for the course of the season, and that means he can't play 90 minutes every single game.

Alex Labidou: Match congestion and rotation aren't exclusive to MLS – there are plenty of managers in the Premier League or Europe's top leagues who bemoan the fixture list and criticize and leagues for being more accommodating to continental competitions. It's also not exclusive to soccer. NBA fans shudder over the phrase "load management." While it hurts the fans and overall interest in MLS when Messi does not play, ultimately Mascherano has to do what is best for his top player – and team. Last year, Messi looked out of gas in the postseason. With Miami wanting to go for multiple trophies this season, this is necessary.

AdvertisementIMAGNIs this all a bad look for the league?

TH: Well, it's not great, but that's football. Yes, this is Messi's league at the moment, but he is still a footballer who needs protecting. If it's missing a game here and there vs overuse leading to a hamstring tear that rules him out for the season, you'd bet the powerbrokers here would choose the former. Of course, there's a massive drop off for the club, and revenue lost for the league – but that isn't Miami's problem whatsoever.

JS: It's a mark on the rest of the league. There are expectations – with his salary partially being paid by every club, given the MLS structure – that he competes. He's more than just a player in MLS – he's the face of the league. If he can just be rested whenever Miami's decides it's time, it opens the league up to criticism. If this were July or August, and he'd just gone on the CCC run, played in the CWC and then started Leagues Cup, on top of domestic action – well then a case could absolutely be made and there would be zero argument against it. But we're one week into the campaign. It's a joke.

RT: This is where MLS is in a unique place compared to other leagues. If Liverpool, say, give Mo Salah a game off, there is no discussion. That's partly because of squad depth, as the dropoff isn't nearly as big in Europe, but also partly because of how leagues are set up. The Designated Player system makes a team like Miami look like "Messi and friends" while Liverpool are a team that just so happens to include a great player in Salah. Liverpool and Miami have the same goals – winning – but the way they get there is perceived differently because of the way MLS is both structured and marketed.

AL: It's not great. The issue is the uniqueness of what brought Lionel Messi to MLS in the first place. Miami doesn't exclusively pay his compensation – partners contribute to his overall package as well. So when he's rested when Apple TV is trying to get its new Sunday Night Football franchise off the ground, it directly impacts the streaming network's ability to generate revenue. Remember, MLS doesn't directly benefit from the Champions Cup in the way it does with the Leagues Cup, for example.

Furthermore, it speaks to a growing sentiment that MLS is too reliant on one star again to market itself, like it did when David Beckham played in the league. And at least he played against a star who might have been more talented in Thierry Henry. MLS at times seems make or break when Messi isn't involved – and that's a recipe for disaster for any sports league. It's time to add more stars who are at least in Messi's orbit to help lessen the burden on the Argentine needing to play every away game to help opposing teams with revenue.

IMAGNShould opposing teams compensate fans when Messi doesn't play?

TH: Maybe? It's not clear what this offers other than a pretty empty gesture. Sure, Messi is a serious revenue driver, but giving away a ticket doesn't help you much next time. Then again, sports without having to pay is probably a good thing? The real fans will keep coming back. The casuals will find another footballer to get excited about.

JS: There's a bigger picture here that the general public overlooks. Teams are relying on revenue from his participation in their home ground. That's just where MLS is at the moment. He is the hottest ticket in town, and prices surge as a result. If he doesn't play and the club builds up anticipation to the match by showcasing him, of course the club needs to say something – they're ultimately responsible for their marketing and their stadium. Free tickets? It's whatever. Find a way to keep the public happy while making things right.

RT: If that's best for their business, sure, why not? Teams are in business of generating revenue, and for many, the business of Messi brings in big bucks. Losing out on that stings and, ultimately, damages reputations with fans. If giving away tickets or discounts helps keep those fans and, more importantly, gets them back in on another day, then go for it. Soccer isn't yet at a place in which it can afford to exclude anyone, so the more the merrier – with or without Messi.

AL: Perhaps? It's seems the right thing to do when you see social videos of fans driving six hours just to watch their icon on the pitch – and he doesn't play. As a team, you need to find ways to drive interest in other ways, and that's one way to do it. But it does feel desperate. MLS and its teams are far too reliant on whether or not Messi shows. For example, a NBA team wouldn't do that, if say, Joel Embiid or LeBron James missed a game. They're confident enough in their own product and experience for their audience.

ImagnAre there too many games, and should MLS intervene?

TH: Yes. There are far, far, far, far too many. The discourse here is a little confusing. Technically, the CONCACAF Champions Cup isn't run by MLS, and is therefore out of the league's jurisdiction. But there can be cuts elsewhere. Shorten the playoffs. You do not need a wildcard or a best-of-three series. Does anyone really learn anything from a 34-game regular seasos and a Leagues Cup? This is about money and business interests, but legs simply have to be protected. Soccer should be about who can play the best when it really counts – not whose legs survive longest.

JS: Of course there are too many games, but that's not an MLS issue – that's the soccer world right now. Too many FIFA windows, a lot of domestic and continental tournaments and of course, regular season play. It's created a hectic calendar that burns everyone out. From Miami's perspective, though, this is what they get for being good. Featuring in CCC this early in the season is a result of being a good soccer team. By being good, they play more games and have a chance to win more trophies. It's why they're in CCC and the Club World Cup on top of two domestic tournaments and regular season MLS. If Mascherano is already worried about congestion one week into the season, maybe coaching isn't the right profession for him.

RT: The answer remains the same as it always has: spend more money. More squad depth, more names, more talent – it all leads to fans caring more. Messi is a phenomenon but in the bigger picture, he's temporary – and, once he's gone, how will MLS respond? The only way to continue growing the league is to continue to spend money to bring in better players. If that doesn't happen, it doesn't matter how many or how few games Messi plays.

AL: Yes, but again it's not exclusive to MLS. It's a worldwide soccer problem. There are too many cup competitions and new ones emerging every year, ranging from friendly tours to the Club World Cup. All of these games devalue leagues – which in theory should be the top priority. There isn't much MLS can do, outside of adding more stars and quality across the league.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) will launch a formal inquiry into the conduct of director of cricket Graeme Smith and the national men’s head coach Mark Boucher after reviewing the contents of the Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) report. The inquiry will take place early in 2022 and will be conducted by independent legal professionals. Both Smith and Boucher remain in their positions and will continue to carry out their duties for the series against India, which starts on Boxing Day.The SJN report, which was made public last Wednesday, made tentative findings that Smith, Boucher and former international AB de Villiers, amongst others, had engaged in conduct that was prejudicial and discriminatory on the basis of race. However, the ombudsman, Dumisa Ntsebeza, was unable to make definite findings and recommended a further process be undertaken, which CSA will now embark on. Smith and Boucher are not the only figures who will be investigated, but are the most high-profile, as CSA looks into all areas of its operation.Related

Flawed but necessary: SJN hearings reveal no heroes, no villains

“The Board has decided to institute formal enquiries into CSA employees, suppliers or contractors who are implicated by the SJN report,” a CSA statement, issued on Monday morning, read. “The Board has done so mindful of its duty to treat allegations of racism or discrimination with the utmost seriousness and in a manner that ensures fairness and due process in terms of South Africa’s labour legislation and the Constitution.”ESPNcricinfo understands that the new review process has been undertaken, in part, because CSA faced a legal threat from parties who had been implicated in the report because the findings were “tentative.” Therefore, if CSA has acted on those findings, they were at risk of their conduct being reviewed in the courts. The inquiry will also give anyone alleged to have acted in ways that are biased a further opportunity to respond, in addition to their testimony at the SJN. Both Smith and Boucher submitted written affidavits to the ombudsman but did not appear to give oral evidence. It is not yet clear which route will be offered to them in the new process. “We hope this will give implicated parties a fair opportunity to be heard so that finality can be achieved, and any final findings can then be acted on,” Lawson Naidoo, CSA board chair, said.CSA will also announce further steps and actions it intends to take to transform cricket, in line with the SJN report in the new year. Among the SJN’s other recommendations was a suggestion to review payment structures to ensure reserve players on tour are adequately compensated and specifically to look at payments in the women’s game, with a view to closing the gender-pay gap, a focus on grassroots development, the establishment of an anonymous complaints service for any further cases of discrimination and the appointing of a permanent ombudsman.

McKenna must drop Ipswich man who made 12 passes

Ipswich Town fans will be starting to get worried about their side’s lowly standing in the Premier League, with back-to-back abject displays souring the mood at Portman Road.

The 4-1 defeat to West Ham United away from home was a sobering watch, but that was reserved for the Tractor Boys faithful that made the trip to the London Stadium.

This more recent 2-0 loss to Everton was, however, the main viewing that all home sections of Ipswich’s ground had to endure, as a number of under performers struggled to ever get going for Kieran McKenna’s men against Sean Dyche’s victorious Toffees.

Ipswich underperformers vs Everton

It was a flat showing in truth from the Tractor Boys, who just need to pick up a win from somewhere in the league to boost confidence, having managed to evade victory in the Premier League now for eight matches on the spin.

The hosts did register 13 shots on Jordan Pickford’s net but it was to no avail, as the Ipswich defence unfortunately put in a shaky display, alongside no goal popping up next to their name.

Iliman Ndiaye’s opener saw Ipswich fail to deal with a Jack Harrison cross into the box, before the ex-Sheffield United man powered home, whilst Michael Keane’s game-clinching second saw a corner not be effectively cleared away which then allowed the Everton number five to confidently slot an effort past Arijanet Murić to make it 2-0.

Dara O’Shea was visibly weak in asserting himself into the contest at the back for McKenna’s men, with the former Burnley defender only managing to win a meagre one duel all afternoon, alongside also misdirecting a pass in the second half which nearly saw Ndiaye grab a brace.

Jack Clarke was wasteful from an attacking point of view, away from Ipswich’s defensive frailties, with the former Sunderland star skying an effort way over the bar early on in the contest which could have changed the complexion of the game if it had cannoned in.

He did win his side a penalty in the first 45 minutes when his tricky feet saw Dwight McNeil tangle with him in the box, but that decision was overturned by VAR in the end, in what was a frustrating afternoon to be associated with the Tractor Boys.

Clarke wasn’t the poorest performer in an attacking sense, however, as experienced Ipswich head Wes Burns continues to struggle to adapt to the bright lights of the Premier League.

Burns' performance vs Everton

Away from what he offered going forward, Burns’ indecisiveness to clear the ball away before Ndiaye’s opener set the Toffees on their way to picking up the three points, with the ball bouncing before the Senegalese attacker scored past Muric.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Moreover, the 29-year-old winger amassed fewer touches when on the pitch compared with the former Manchester City shot-stopper, accumulating a paltry 22 touches next to the ‘keeper’s 30, as the ex-Fleetwood Town man continually failed to leave his mark on the contest.

It was a day at the office for Burns where nothing really went to plan, with zero accurate crosses and zero accurate long balls registered, alongside also failing to win a single duel from four attempts.

He could also only complete 12 accurate passes, with Burns thankful to be substituted off just after the hour mark to put an end to his dire display.

There will be an inquest now as to who should start down this right flank moving forward, with the below-par Ipswich number seven needing to be dropped for someone else to get a chance, ahead of the Tractor Boys travelling to Thomas Frank’s Brentford next in the league.

The 29-year-old did very much play an important role in Ipswich unbelievably making it to the big time, having scored on the final day of the Championship season to secure automatic promotion bragging rights for his team, but the likes of summer recruit Chiedozie Ogbene could now be better suited as a fresher option in his place.

McKenna might well even rejig his main XI and opt to start Omari Hutchinson down this wing again, with the Ipswich manager in need of changing things up soon to avoid more and more defeats being notched up.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, the deal only went through after Tel reportedly turned down Spurs' initial permanent approach amid interest from Manchester United, who walked away from talks with Bayern due to the German side's excessive demands. Asked if the France Under-21 international had knocked back his team, Postecoglou explained the young forward's thinking.

  • WHAT POSTECOGLOU SAID

"I think people need to understand that you are talking about a 19-year-old who has to make a major decision for his career and it's not that he rejected us or rejected anyone else," he told reporters. "I think he just wanted to be comfortable with his decision. I don't think he wanted to be pushed in a certain direction and it's credit to him. "I had a conversation with him and it was purely around the football and I think he'll find a really good place for him here."

Asked if he is convinced of Tel's commitment to Spurs, he added: "Yes, 100 per cent. I am more than 100% sure because he took so much time, was so diligent about finding out everything. He had other options so it gave me more confidence that we are getting the right kind of mentality, the right kind of player. He is very ambitious. He has a great self-belief and confidence. He feels he can reach the top of the game and he has chosen us which is great vindication of what we are doing."

Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea in contact to sign "special" player ahead of 2025

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared an intriguing update on Chelsea’s transfer plans, with BlueCo already in contact over signing a player ahead of next year.

Chelsea's full summer transfer window explained

It has been a very promising start to the Premier League season for new head coach Enzo Maresca, who has overseen three wins from his first five top-flight matches in charge of the Blues.

Impressive attacking displays against Wolves and West Ham have only been dampened by an opening weekend defeat to champions Man City, while Chelsea were pretty unlucky not to defeat Crystal Palace in their 1-1 draw, given they dominated the overall play and created a host of chances.

Chelsea also displayed real grit when they came away from Bournemouth with a 1-0 victory, with Robert Sanchez saving a penalty and Maresca’s side coping well defensively before Christopher Nkunku scored a winner in the dying minutes.

The west Londoners take on Brighton at 3pm today, aiming to make it five games unbeaten in all competitions and a third consecutive top-flight victory.

This comes after a summer of serious spending yet again at Stamford Bridge, with Joao Felix, Mike Penders, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Renato Veiga, Estevao Willian, Filip Jorgensen, Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino, Caleb Wiley, Omari Kellyman, Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho all joining for a total of around £200m.

As has been the case since Clearlake Capital’s takeover of the club in 2022, Chelsea remain active as they scour for new additions to their squad. Reports claim that they want a prolific new goalscorer, despite Nicolas Jackson’s fine start to 2024/25, with Victor Osimhen assured by Chelsea they’ll try to strike a deal for him in the new year.

Meanwhile, some at Chelsea believe Victor Boniface should be their number-one striker target instead of Osimhen, so the 25-year-old Galatasaray forward is by no means their only option.

Chelsea in contact over signing Jhon Duran

As per Romano’s Dailybriefing, via GiveMeSport, they also hold an interest in Aston Villa star Jhon Duran. The Colombia international has scored four goals in five appearances following a fantastic start to the season under Unai Emery, with all of his strikes coming from the substitutes’ bench.

Maresca and co are fully aware of the “special” 20-year-old’s start to this term, so much so that Chelsea are already in contact over signing Duran.

“There have been some rumours of Barcelona chasing Jhon Duran in the last 24 hours, but let me say that Barca, at this moment, have not been active in negotiations for any striker,” said Romano.

“Obviously, they are keeping a close eye on the strikers market, but it’s not something really concrete because Hansi Flick is very happy with what Robert Lewandowski is doing. Jhon Duran was really close to joining West Ham in the window as we know, but the deal collapsed after more than five bids were presented by West Ham to Aston Villa.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

“Duran wanted to move, but a deal didn’t happen between the clubs. Credits to Aston Villa, because they never wanted to accept those proposals, only super big money, something around £50m. West Ham only offered £42m/£43m plus add-ons with a percentage of a future sale, but Villa always said no.

“There are now rumours that several clubs are interested in Jhon Duran and I can confirm that Chelsea really tried to sign him too. Chelsea rate the player and still like the player at this moment. Contacts are ongoing, but it’s not something that we can definitely update now.”

West Indies go 2-0 up as Australia fold for 140

Hetmyer, Bravo and Russell star with the bat for the hosts as Australia fall in a heap for the second night running

Andrew McGlashan11-Jul-2021A superbly constructed century partnership between Shimron Hetmyer and Dwayne Bravo was the cornerstone of an impressive West Indies performance as they went 2-0 up against Australia.Having pulled victory from the jaws of defeat 24 hours ago this time a West Indies victory felt far more secure after they had posted a formidable 196 and removed Australia’s openers cheaply.Watch cricket on ESPN+

Hetmyer, who had been given a vote of confidence by injured captain Kieron Pollard prior to the series, found the ideal balance between seeking boundaries and keeping the scoreboard ticking as he reached a career-best and just his second T20I half-century. Bravo, promoted ahead of Andre Russell and Nicholas Pooran when West Indies were three down inside 10 overs, batted at his highest position and produced his highest score for at international level for five years although was given two lives. The fourth-wicket stand of 103 was West Indies’ best in T20Is then the innings was given its finishing touches by Russell. There were 13 sixes (and just eight fours) in the innings but what will please captain and coaching staff was how the strike was also rotated. West Indies managed 123 runs off the second 10 overs.Mitchell Marsh made his second consecutive half-century and West Indies lost Fidel Edwards from their attack with injury, but the asking rate climbed out of control. In the end, Australia fell in a heap for the second night running.Pressure grows on GayleThere is no arguing about what Chris Gayle has achieved in his career, but right now batting is looking a pretty painful affair for him. He has 102 runs in nine innings since returning to the side against Sri Lanka and his 13 off 16 deliveries today did not hint at any return to fluency. Over his career there have been many examples of him eating up dot balls but turning around an innings with such force that it doesn’t matter, but he’s not getting out of the starting blocks at the moment. On this occasion he ended up dragging on against Marsh in the eighth over which left West Indies uncertain at 59 for 3, but it may have been the best thing to happen to the innings.Mitchell Starc’s last two overs cost 30 runs•AFP

The perfect partnershipIt was surprising to see Bravo walk out at No. 5 but it proved a masterstroke, although Australia had their chances to remove him. Adam Zampa missed a low caught-and-bowled chance when he had 2 and Dan Christian made good ground to a chance at long-off when Bravo had 15 but it spilled out. That second dropped chance came in the 12th over with the stand still to move through the gears and Bravo’s run-a-ball display was threatening to be polarizing. But in the 13th over, both he and Hetmyer cleared the ropes against Ashton Agar and from there the innings never looked back. Hetmyer struck the ball beautifully having calmly played himself into his innings, bringing up a 29-ball fifty with an audacious scooped six against Mitchell Starc whose last two overs cost 30 on another difficult night. The final four overs of the innings were carted for 14, 15, 16 and 16 with Russell finishing it emphatically.Level pegging, but not reallyIt was worth noting that after eight overs both teams were 59 for 3, but from there the two innings went on vastly different paths. Australia had been set back by the early loss of both openers – Matthew Wade pulled the second ball to mid-on and Aaron Finch was flummoxed by Edwards’ slower delivery – then Josh Philippe couldn’t get going before missing a straight delivery from Hayden Walsh Jr. Marsh’s innings was also ended by Walsh, who took his tally to six wickets in two matches, which heralded another clatter of wickets. Australia’s position was summed up when Christian and Agar were both left watching the big screen to see who had been run out when both ended up at the same end.
