Perfect with Kudus & Gibbs-White: Spurs to make bid for "complete" talent

The last couple of days have been a whirlwind, to say the least, for Tottenham Hotspur, making multiple key moves in the transfer window ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Mohammed Kudus’ move to North London was confirmed last night, in a deal worth in the region of £55m, handing Thomas Frank the attacking quality he’s craved since taking the reins.

However, their heavy spending looks set to continue, with Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White completing his medical today after his £60m release clause was triggered.

Nottingham Forest's MorganGibbs-Whitereacts after the match

The deal for the latter has progressed rapidly, only taking two hours between the Lilywhites’ original interest being confirmed before a deal for the 25-year-old’s signature was agreed.

Despite the two moves in recent days, work is constantly being conducted elsewhere, with other players potentially joining the duo in North London next season.

The latest on Spurs’ hunt for added signings this summer

Yoane Wissa has been a player firmly on Spurs’ radar over recent weeks, especially considering his former boss left Brentford to take the reins of the Lilywhites this summer.

The 28-year-old netted 19 Premier League goals last campaign, but could cost a pretty penny, with the Bees demanding a fee in the region of £50m for his signature, despite having just one year left on his deal.

However, he’s not the only forward on their radar this window, with Nice star Evann Guessand a player in their sights, according to the latest report from Africa Foot.

They claim that the Lilywhites are preparing a £22m bid for the Ivorian international, who registered 13 goals and nine assists across all competitions last season.

It also states that the French outfit are holding out for a fee in the region of £25m this summer, with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fenerbahçe also interested in the 24-year-old’s signature.

Why Spurs’ £25m target would be perfect with Kudus & Gibbs-White

The prospect of Gibbs-White operating in the number 10 position for Spurs is certainly an exciting one, especially considering his tally of contributions at the City Ground last campaign.

The England international netted seven goals and eight assists, as he helped Nuno Espírito Santo’s side secure a place in Europe for the first time in three decades.

His average of 1.7 chances created per 90 showcases the ability he possesses in being able to find a teammate, something which could benefit Kudus and Guessand in attacking areas.

Kudus himself has also demonstrated the talent he possesses when in possession, completing 90% of the passes he attempted last campaign, having the tools to also provide those around him.

Should Guessand make the bargain move to North London, he could be a huge hit for Frank’s side, having the ability to finish off the chances provided by the aforementioned duo.

Nice winger Evann Guessand

The Nice star, who’s been labelled “complete” by current boss Franck Haise, registered 20 combined goals and assists in the league last season, one of only seven players to achieve the feat – showcasing the clinical talent he possesses.

His subsequent goalscoring tally saw him finish in the top 17% of all players in the division, offering depth and versatility given his ability to feature across the frontline.

Guessand’s talents are further reflected in his tally of 1.7 dribbles completed per 90, able to take the ball past the opposition and create his own danger, along with linking up with Gibbs-White and Kudus.

£25m in today’s market could appear to be another excellent addition for Frank’s side, having the talent and potential to be an immediate and long-term star in North London.

If he can continue his tremendous rise in England, Guessand would be a superb signing and one that could reinforce the fact that the Lilywhites are a side to be reckoned with ahead of 2025/26.

Berta readying £53m bid to sign Arsenal's answer to Florian Wirtz

With Andrea Berta now Arsenal’s transfer chief, replacing Edu a few months ago, there is a different feel to the club’s transfer strategy this summer.

In fact, it’s quite a clever one really. Berta isn’t putting all of his eggs in one basket. Instead, he’s advancing a number of deals before concluding which would be the best one to proceed with.

If you believe reports, then the Gunners have held negotiations over deals for both RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko and Sporting’s goal machine, Viktor Gyokeres.

The latest on that is the Swede is now ‘dreaming’ of a move to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Alas, signing a striker isn’t Arsenal’s only priority over the transfer window. They also need a winger.

Arsenal's pursuit of a new winger this summer

This is a busy old time for Berta and if he can remodel Arsenal’s attack successfully, he will become a quick fan favourite in north London.

On the agenda on the flanks is Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, with Arsenal having reportedly held talks to bring the Brazilian to the Emirates.

If a move cannot be done there, they may well turn their attention to Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams again. The Spaniard, who scored in the Euro 2024 final last summer, caught the eye of the Gunners during that tournament but despite the winger’s release clause, did not look at doing a deal.

A year on, they could revisit their interest. That’s according to reports in Spain who claim that while Williams is hoping to stay in Iberia, where Barcelona are very much interested, Bayern Munich and Arsenal are also looking at the 22-year-old.

Athletic Bilbao'sNicoWilliamscelebrates scoring their third goal

Williams ‘likes’ the idea of moving to Barca but Bayern and the Gunners are now ‘willing to meet’ his bargain £53m release clause. They are also willing to lodge a high salary offer in a bid to tempt him away from the clutches of the Camp Nou.

Why Williams could be Arsenal's answer to Florian Wirtz

In the opening ten days of the summer transfer window before it shut again due to the Club World Cup, it was all very much about Florian Wirtz.

Why the summer transfer window will close for six days and re-open again

Premier League clubs have recently voted for the transfer window to open early this summer – here’s how it will work and why it’s happening.

ByStephan Georgiou Mar 27, 2025

Liverpool have pulled no punches in their bid to capitalise on a title-winning season and they have done so by breaking a British transfer record.

Wirtz will arrive from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £116.5m. In the words of former Leverkusen striker Patrick Helmes, he’s “probably the best midfielder in the world,” but that doesn’t mean he can’t shine in other areas.

Florian Wirtz

The German is predominantly a no.10, cut from the same cloth as a Mesut Ozil or Kevin De Bruyne, but he’s also very much capable of featuring from the flanks.

Aged just 22, coincidentally the same age as Williams, the Spaniard could be the Wirtz-like signing that Arsenal really need to kick on themselves.

If there was one area of weakness at Anfield this season, it was the no.10 role. Dominik Szoboszlai is certainly no mug, but his goalscoring ability has been questioned, notably finding the net just six times in the Premier League throughout 2024/25. Well, Arne Slot has already solved that problem; Wirtz bagged ten Bundesliga goals and beat the goalkeeper on 16 occasions in all competitions.

So, Arsenal now need to address their own weakness, and it’s on Williams’ left-hand side.

Bukayo Saka is always going to guarantee you output on the right and whatever you say about Mikel Arteta’s lack of a striker, Kai Havertz was on for a 20-goal season before his injury and Mikel Merino scored six in 12 outings as a centre-forward.

It’s the left flank where the biggest imbalance in quality has arguably been seen. Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard scored eight goals apiece in the league this season.

Their biggest issue is consistency and to be fair, you may well argue that with Williams, too. The Spain international bagged 11 in all competitions with only five coming in LaLiga. Judging by that, you may well question where the upgrade is coming from.

Spain star Nico Williams

The numbers below suggest Williams would certainly be a significant upgrade in some areas. He’s a better and more regular dribbler, while the sheer number of shot-creating actions suggests he could be an enormous threat in the Premier League.

Additionally, as he was described by Bilbao’s official channels, Williams is “one of the best wingers in the world”. He famously showcased that for Spain at Euro 2024, thriving in a much better team. He registered two goals and one assist in his six European Championship matches, while during the recent Nations League campaign, the young winger scored two goals in four games, also registering a solitary assist.

This is a player whose output could soar to new heights in a team like Arsenal. He’s already an “electric” talent in the words of content creator, Statman Dave, and given Arteta’s track record of improving young talent, Williams would surely thrive at Arsenal.

Like Wirtz at Anfield, the young Spaniard could solve one of the Gunners’ biggest problems in attack.

His value's soared 3,868%: Sunderland have struck gold on their new Clarke

Part and parcel of being a club in the lower leagues in England, as Sunderland had been for far too long, is that you are constantly at risk of clubs higher up the food chain snatching your best talent.

The Black Cats finished 16th in the Championship at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, falling well short of the play-offs, and it was time for Jack Clarke to make his way up the pyramid without the club.

Ipswich Town swooped to sign the winger in a deal that could rise to £20m, following their promotion to the Premier League, and that meant that Sunderland hit the jackpot with the forward.

How Sunderland struck gold with Jack Clarke

The Black Cats signed the English wizard from Tottenham Hotspur on a permanent deal in 2022, after an initial loan spell on Wearside, and Transfermarkt valued him at £2.9m at the time of the move.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

Clarke went on to rack up 24 goals and 16 assists in two seasons in the Championship with Sunderland as an exciting wing wizard, which convinced Ipswich to splash a fee of up to £20m on his services.

This shows that his value soared by just over £17m during his spell at the club, thanks to his performances in the second tier, which shows that the Black Cats struck gold with the winger by providing him with a platform to showcase his talent on a regular basis.

There is now a player in the current squad who is on his way to becoming Jack Clarke 2.0, as Sunderland have already hit the jackpot with Eliezer Mayenda.

How high Eliezer Mayenda's value has soared

The man who got Sunderland back into the game at Wembley with a terrific strike in the play-off final has been a terrific signing for the club.

Mayenda arrived from Sochaux in the summer of 2023, valued at just £252k by Transfermarkt at the time, and he failed to score in eight Championship appearances during the 2023/24 campaign.

Regis Le Bris came through the door last summer, though, and transformed the young starlet, who went on to provide ten goals and five assists in 40 outings in the second tier.

As you can see in the table above, the 20-year-old star’s market value has soared by a staggering 3,868% since his initial move to the Stadium of Light, to the point that he is now valued at a whopping £10m.

Mayenda, who was described as a “threat” by Kevin Phillips, has followed in Clarke’s footsteps as a young player who has soared in value as a result of performing brilliantly in the Championship, thanks to the opportunities given to him by Le Bris.

Sunderland could sign "incredible" star who's as exciting as Enzo Le Fee

Sunderland could now go full steam ahead to try and sign this exciting star after sealing promotion.

This shows that Sunderland have hit the jackpot with the Spain U21 international, because they snapped him up when his value was low and have turned him into an incredibly valuable player and asset ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Top target: Man Utd pushing to sign "incredible" £313k-p/w Barcelona star

Manchester United are now determined to sign an “incredible” Barcelona star, having identified him as a top target for the summer transfer window, according to a report.

Man Utd in need of summer rebuild

Harry Maguire’s late winner to send Man Utd through to the Europa League semi-final was undoubtedly the best moment since Ruben Amorim’s arrival, but the high was short-lived, with a 1-0 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers following at the weekend.

With United just two points clear of 17th place, it is clear a rebuild will be needed this summer, and with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to deliver in front of goal, a new striker is of particular interest.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha, Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko are among the potential targets, but striker is not the only position in which Amorim is looking to strengthen this summer.

Signing a new central midfielder is also on the agenda, and there have even been suggestions they could make a move for Scott McTominay, who has been thriving since moving to Napoli last summer.

According to a report from Spain, however, Man United’s top target for the summer transfer window is Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong, and they are determined to get a deal done, which means they are willing to make a huge offer for his services.

Benfica's Kerem Akturkoglu in action with FC Barcelona'sFrenkiedeJong

De Jong has been identified as the ideal option to upgrade United’s midfield, and there are plans to force Barca to the negotiating table with a tempting offer, despite the La Liga club’s insistence that he is not for sale.

The Red Devils are set to step up their pursuit in the coming weeks, but for a deal to transpire, the Dutchman’s entourage would have to change their stance, with the move not currently of interest.

"Incredible" De Jong impressing at Barcelona

It is no surprise to see the 27-year-old being linked with a move to Man Utd once again, given that he has been a long-term target, and he has continued to impress for Barcelona in La Liga this season.

After overcoming an ankle injury early in the season, the Netherlands international has received regular game time for the title-chasers, picking up two goals and two assists in La Liga, while he also ranks highly on some other key metrics for midfielders over the past year.

Former United boss Erik ten Hag is also a huge admirer of his compatriot, saying: “Frenkie is an incredible player and for every club in the whole world he will strengthen the squad because he has a unique quality.”

That said, a move does not seem likely this summer, given that Barcelona are unwilling to part ways with their £313k-per-week midfielder, so Amorim may be forced to move on to alternative targets.

Duleep semi-finals: Gaikwad the standout as India's international stars struggle for form

While Gaikwad hit 184 for West Zone, the likes of Iyer and Thakur had lukewarm games

Ashish Pant07-Sep-2025

Yashasvi Jaiswal – 4 and 64

Jaiswal began the semi-final by clipping Khaleel Ahmed to the deep-square leg boundary. But his innings lasted just three balls when Khaleel nipped a length ball sharply back into Jaiswal, who played all around it, and was trapped lbw for 4. He was visibly unhappy with the decision, and was seen talking to the match referee at the end of the opening day. After a low score in the first innings, Jaiswal started the second cautiously. There weren’t any flashy shots or attempts to clear the ropes early. But once he got the hang of the surface, Jaiswal attacked. There was a reverse sweep over point against Harsh Dubey before Jaiswal charged down and smashed the left-arm spinner straight over the sight screen. He scored 64 off 70 balls on the final day, with his innings including three fours and three sixes.Related

Shreyas Iyer – 25 and 12

Iyer got an early reprieve in the first innings and started positively, but failed to convert his start into a big score. He struck four fours in his innings of 25 off 28 balls, but was done in by Khaleel’s around-the-wicket angle. Iyer tried to run the ball fine towards deep third, but could only manage an inside edge that flattened his middle stump. In the second innings, Iyer nudged offspinner Saransh Jain past slip, and then waltzed down the track and deposited him into the sightscreen. But he soon fell, edging Jain behind to the wicketkeeper for 12.Ruturaj Gaikwad hit 22 runs in an over against Khaleel Ahmed•PTI

Ruturaj Gaikwad – 184 and 16

Gaikwad’s first-innings 184 was the knock of the match. He came in with West Zone on 10 for 2 in the fourth over, with the ball moving around under cloudy skies. Gaikwad was cautious against seamers Deepak Chahar and Khaleel, and then cashed in against the spinners. He accelerated his innings perfectly, reaching his eighth first-class century off just 131 balls. Gaikwad finished on 184 from 206 deliveries, the highlight being a 22-run over against Khaleel, where he struck him for four fours and a six.In the second innings, Gaikwad hit Dubey for two straight sixes, but fell for 16 after being caught at first slip.

Shardul Thakur – 64 and 6, and 0 for 42

The West Zone captain scored a crucial 64 in the first innings, having an 84-run stand with Tanush Kotian to push the score past 400. Thakur was assertive in his stroke play, hitting seven fours and a six in his 98-ball knock. But his run out on the second morning became the turning point, with West Zone losing their last four wickets for 27 runs.Thakur’s bowling, however, felt flat. He bowled only 11 overs in the first innings, including two maidens, and conceded 42 runs.Rajat Patidar scored 77 the only time he batted in the semi-final•PTI

Tushar Deshpande – 0 for 76

Deshpande was the quickest among the fast bowlers. He toiled the most among the West Zone quicks, adopting the short-ball tactic in his later spells, and was also uncomfortable to face. Deshpande hit at least two Central Zone batters on the midriff, and had them ducking and weaving. But all that didn’t translate into a wicket.

Rajat Patidar – 77

Patidar was one of six half-centurions in Central Zone’s only innings as they piled up 600 to take a first-innings lead and secure a place in the final. Patidar stroked 14 fours in his 77 off 84 balls, and looked fluent throughout. A key feature of his knock was the quick singles he ran to mid-off and mid-on as he raced to a 62-ball fifty. On the third morning, Patidar smashed Kotian for four fours in an over before being cleaned up by Dharmendrasinh Jadeja.Deepak Chahar went for 52 runs in 14 overs in the first innings•PTI

Khaleel Ahmed – 2 for 82 and 0 for 12

Khaleel bowled with good pace in the first innings, but was expensive, going for 82 runs in 15 overs. He found the right channels on the first morning but couldn’t sustain it in the later spells. Gaikwad took Khaleel for 36 runs in 24 balls in the first innings, but Khaleel did remove Jaiswal and Iyer. He bowled just four overs in the second innings, conceding 12 runs.

Deepak Chahar – 1 for 52

Chahar had an average outing with the ball. He removed Harvik Desai with an outswinger on the first day, but otherwise seemed ineffective. With the surface not assisting the fast bowlers much, Chahar found it tough and went for 52 runs in 14 overs, managing just one wicket. He did not take the field in the second innings, though he did not look in any visual discomfort.

India's greatest ODI wins: From 1983 to 2011, and everything in between

As India prepare to play their 1000th ODI, ESPNcricinfo looks back at some of their most iconic moments in the format

Yash Jha04-Feb-2022Belief from the Berbice win

Eleven weeks ahead of the third men’s ODI World Cup, India’s ODI record made for bleak reading: 11 wins in 38 matches. And although six of those wins had come outside India, only one happened to be in a World Cup, when they beat East Africa in 1975.But in Berbice, and amid a raft of issues – Sunil Gavaskar’s sacking as captain, and talk of a zonal rift in the camp – they became the first team to beat a full-strength West Indies in their own backyard.Gavaskar played one of his finest one-day knocks – 90 off 117 balls – and Kapil Dev bludgeoned 72 off just 38 deliveries as India posted 282 in 47 overs, a score which would remain their highest ODI total till 1987. The seamers Kapil, Balwinder Sandhu and Madan Lal then took two wickets apiece, while Ravi Shastri took 3 for 48, as the two-time world champions were held to 255.”It’s this particular win that helps convince many of us that we may well be able to pull our weight together as a team,” Kapil would write in his autobiography .Kapil Dev cracked 175* off 138 balls and rescued India from the depths of 17 for 5•Getty ImagesTurnaround at Tunbridge Wells

The game that no one saw; yet the game that no one has forgotten.India began their 1983 World Cup campaign with a famous win over West Indies at Old Trafford – the first time the champions had lost a World Cup match – but one week on, having suffered a heavy loss to Australia before West Indies avenged their defeat, India had entered virtual knockout territory. And against Zimbabwe, the pressure told: the wheels had come off less than an hour into the match. After deciding to bat, India’s top five were all gone with the total at 17, as Peter Rawson and Kevin Curran did the early damage. And it was after this that Kapil cracked 175* off 138 balls, single-handedly taking India all the way to 266.Quite possibly, it was the most important innings in Indian cricket history, arguably one of the finest ever in limited-overs cricket and certainly the greatest knock for which there is no footage available anywhere. As Kapil soared to a then world-record ODI score, India’s flight of fancy had truly taken off.Lords at Lord’s

Zimbabwe had been defeated, Australia were brushed aside in a virtual quarter-final and England were eliminated in the semi-finals. Yet, no one gave India a chance in the final, as they stepped onto Lord’s to take on West Indies for the third time in the tournament. With India bowled out for 183 and Viv Richards having led West Indies to 50 for 1, even the optimistic few had given up. But that is when Richards top-edged a pull off Madan Lal, and Kapil at square leg turned around and ran, and kept running until he completed the catch close to the boundary rope.A few hours later, with West Indies crumbling as Lal and Player-of-the-Final Mohinder Amarnath bagged three wickets each, the Indian flag was flying over the home of cricket. The world champions had been dislodged; a force had awakened. If you thought 1983 was a fluke, 1985 proved you wrong•Getty ImagesAnother global crown

Less than two years after the 1983 World Cup triumph, another ODI crown was up for grabs – this time the World Championship of Cricket in Australia. The reigning world champions lived up to their billing with an unblemished group-stage display, earning comfortable wins over Pakistan, England and Australia, before overcoming New Zealand in their semi-final to set up a title clash with Pakistan.Kapil – no longer captain, with Gavaskar reinstated in 1984 – provided a dream start with the ball along with Chetan Sharma, as Pakistan crumbled to 33 for 4. Just as Javed Miandad and Imran Khan appeared to be stitching a recovery, up stepped Laxman Sivaramakrishnan to have Miandad stumped, and Pakistan eventually ended with 176.A century opening stand between Kris Srikkanth, who was the Player of the Final, and Shastri, the Player of the Tournament, rendered the chase a mere formality, as India won by eight wickets. As far as India-Pakistan showdowns go, this was far from a classic, but it stamped India’s arrival as a consistent side in the format.125 and all that

Less than two weeks later, the arch-rivals were locking horns in another multi-team tournament, all the way across from Melbourne to Sharjah. Pakistan seemed headed for instant redemption when Imran Khan’s stunning 6 for 14 saw India dismissed for just 125.But Kapil – clearly the man for rainy days – wasn’t giving up so easily, and with spinners Sivaramakrishnan and Shastri providing admirable company, India bowled Pakistan out for just 87. No lower total had been successfully defended in men’s ODIs at the time; only once has the mark been bettered since.India chased down a 300-plus target for the first time to win the Independence Cup final in 1998•AFPBattle of Bangalore

India and Pakistan have met several times at the World Cup, but hardly any of their contests have had the edge of this feisty encounter at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium: co-hosts against defending champions in a knockout clash.Pakistan captain Wasim Akram’s last-minute pullout added to the tension, but it wasn’t a patch on the drama that was to follow. Navjot Singh Sidhu’s 93 gave India a platform to build on, before Ajay Jadeja’s stunning assault on Waqar Younis propelled them to 287, as 50 runs came from the last three overs. But Pakistan blazed away to 84 in their first ten, and despite Saeed Anwar’s dismissal, Aamer Sohail continued hitting. He took on Venkatesh Prasad, at one stage gesturing to the local boy to go fetch the ball from the boundary. Prasad, though, had the last laugh. Eventually, India waltzed into the semi-finals, where their hopes were dashed by Sri Lanka.Another decider, and another India-Pakistan match

Before this match, India had only ever posted 300-plus twice in ODIs, and only once in the history of ODIs had a target of 300-plus been successfully chased down.Saeed Anwar – that constant thorn in India’s flesh – and Ijaz Ahmed hit hundreds to take Pakistan to 314 for 5, but the Indian top order seemed to have it covered: they had coasted to 250 for 1 in 38 overs, on the back of Sourav Ganguly’s 124 and Robin Singh’s 82, to go with a 26-ball 41 from Sachin Tendulkar. With 65 required from the last ten overs – the match had been reduced to 48 overs each – a mini-collapse ensued, and it boiled down to three to win off the last two balls. That is when, in the fading Dhaka light, Hrishikesh Kanitkar swatted Saqlain Mushtaq for four and made himself a pop-quiz favourite for the ages.Sachin Tendulkar celebrated his 25th birthday with a century in the Coca Cola Cup final•AFPDancing in the aisles

It had already taken one of India’s most classic losses for them to be in this final – Tendulkar’s desert-storm epic two days earlier against the same opponents had been enough for India to cross the score they required to qualify for the title clash. But in the final, Tendulkar went the distance to celebrate his 25th birthday.Nearly 25 years on, the sights and sounds of that April evening remain a clear memory for so many: Tendulkar dancing down the track for fun against Shane Warne, memorably, but also against Tom Moody and Steve Waugh; the spectators, immortalised by the words of Tony Grieg on air, dancing in the aisles, and India acing a steep chase to land another multi-team trophy. And this one also had Kanitkar applying the final touch with a boundary.Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif conjured up a magical partnership at Lord’s•PA PhotosMiracle at Lord’s – again

The trophy cabinet had started to run dry post the 1998 high – after winning five out of six multi-team tournament finals in 1998 alone, India had lost nine successive finals from 1999 to 2001. There was a loss in the ICC Champions Trophy final in 2000, there were maulings to sub-continent rivals, there were tough defeats to higher-ranked teams, there were unexpected losses to lower-ranked teams… it was becoming an unwanted specialty. With this backdrop, cut to the halfway stage of the second innings at Lord’s: chasing 326, India were 146 for 5 after 24 overs, Tendulkar had just walked back to the pavilion, and at the crease were two youngsters with less than 60 matches between them. That was when Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif conjured something magical. Yuvraj dominated the 121-run association, and Kaif kept his nerve in a tense finish. It was, at the time, the second-highest successful chase in ODIs. And Ganguly, captain through most of that barren finals run, expressed his relief with a topless celebration on the Lord’s balcony. The wheels for India’s success in 2011 were set in motion with the CB Series win in 2008•Getty ImagesOn top down under

Twenty-three years on from their World Championship of Cricket triumph, India hadn’t won another final in Australia. In three attempts, they had failed to take any of the best-of-three finals to even a third game. This time, they were up against an Australian outfit that might have been on their final legs, but were still three-time defending ODI world champions. India, starting their own transition, faced an early test in their three-year plan towards world domination with a new captain at the helm. For all the talk of transition, and in the midst of some high-profile exits, it was the old guard who dominated the deciders: Tendulkar chose an opportune moment to register his first ODI hundred in Australia, helping India complete a 240-run chase in Sydney. He almost got another two days later, scoring 91 in Brisbane, before Praveen Kumar and co defended 258.The third final wasn’t needed this time either; the wheels had been set in motion.Yuvraj dethrones the champions

A little over three years later, and almost exactly eight years on from the day Australia demolished their World Cup dream in Johannesburg, India ended the longest reign in the history of the competition. While they didn’t quite have the same aura as earlier, this was still an Australia that hadn’t lost a World Cup knockout game since 1996, and Ricky Ponting wasn’t done: the Australia captain’s century took his team to 260.Only twice in the history of the World Cup had higher totals been successfully chased down in knockout contests. Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir made fifties, but a middle-order meltdown meant that when MS Dhoni departed, India still needed 74 from 75 balls with the last recognised pair in the middle.Yuvraj and Suresh Raina, two men who hadn’t entered the tournament in the best vein of form, fought resolutely at the erstwhile Sardar Patel Stadium, and gave wings to India’s title hopes.Raina made among the more vital 30 not outs India have ever seen, and Yuvraj – well on the way to winning the Player-of-the-Tournament award – followed his 2 for 44 earlier in the day with an unbeaten 57, belting a drive through the off side for the winning runs before letting out a guttural roar to belie the physical strife through which he was playing the tournament.MS Dhoni promoted himself in the 2011 World Cup final, and won India the match•Getty Images Sealed with a six
The vision from 2008 came to fruition in 2011. No team had won a world title on home soil until then, and the ride had been far from smooth for India: they lost to South Africa and tied with England after scoring 338 in the group stages before the aforementioned quarter-final win against Australia, and then defended 260 against Pakistan in the semi-finals.Mahela Jayawardene’s majestic 103* led a late onslaught that took Sri Lanka to 274; no team had ever chased more than 250 to win a World Cup final. And when Tendulkar exited the World Cup stage with India 31 for 2, the nerves were beginning to fray. But Gambhir kept the Lankans at bay, stitching two of the most important partnerships in modern-day Indian cricket: 83 with Virat Kohli, and 109 with Dhoni. He fell on 97, meaning Yuvraj – who had to contend with a demotion as Dhoni promoted himself to tackle the threat of Muthiah Muralidaran – joined the skipper for the final act.Dhoni finished off in style, Tendulkar finally got his hands on the trophy, and a generation of Indian fans got to live what they had only heard of so far: a World Cup victory.

'Drawing a long bow' – Greenberg defends Khawaja's golf after back spasm causes chaos

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg has defended Usman Khawaja saying it is “drawing a long bow” to suggest that his decision to play golf prior to the Test match impacted the back spasms that he suffered on the opening day in Perth.Khawaja, 38, has come under scrutiny after the issue forced him off the field late in England’s short first innings on Friday. His absence was ill-timed as England then collapsed while he was stretching to overcome the spasm and it left stand-in captain Steven Smith calling for Khawaja to come back onto the field.Khawaja eventually did return to the field for the end of the innings but, according to ICC rules, had not returned for the equal amount of time he had been off and therefore was ineligible to open the batting. It meant Marnus Labuschagne was forced to open and Smith batted at No.3. Khawaja eventually batted at No.4 and was dismissed for just 2.Khawaja fielded for all 15 overs Australia bowled prior to lunch on day two and looked unaffected. But he dropped a catch at slip after lunch and then jumped for another and his back seized up again. He left the field for the last 48 minutes of England’s second innings and was unable to open again, with Travis Head walking out for the fourth-innings chase alongside Weatherald.”Unfortunately Uzzy is not moving too well,” Cummins told Fox Cricket on Saturday afternoon. “His back flared up again in the slips going for a jump above his head so he’s unable to open.”We were trying to work out whether we shuffle everyone up like the first innings, but Trav ran off and he was keen to give it a crack.”He’s done it quite a bit in white ball cricket so we switched those roles.”Hopefully Uzzy can still fill in a role in the middle order at some point.”Don’t think we’ll see him until after Marn and Smithy.”CA stressed it was a new injury that he had not suffered prior to Friday. Khawaja had played golf on Tuesday and Wednesday either side of Australia’s training sessions. He skipped Thursday’s optional session, with only four of Australia’s XI doing any training, to play golf alongside Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland. Several of Australia’s coaching staff also played in the afternoon after the main session.Greenberg, an avid golfer himself who sat with Perth-born professional golfer Min Woo Lee at Perth Stadium on Friday, said there was no correlation between Khawaja’s golf and his back issue.”[Golf] has held him in good stead over the last couple of years. It’s not uncommon for a lot of them to play golf a day prior,” Greenberg told SEN. “Did that correlate to any of the issues? I personally don’t think so.”Usman’s a very seasoned campaigner, he knows his body well, and he knows how to get himself prepared for cricket. So I think that is drawing a long bow. A lot of people talk about cricket being played between the ears.”So getting some time away from being in your hotel or at training I think is really important. I noticed Mitch Starc played golf with him, so it certainly didn’t impact his performance.”Golf is a huge part of Australia’s team culture, as it is for their opponents England. They play regularly in the lead-up to Test matches at home and abroad. The entire squad had a team-bonding trip to northern Scotland to play a week of golf before the WTC final, which they lost to South Africa.CA’s medical and strength and conditioning staff have long sanctioned it, especially for the fast bowlers, as low impact time on their feet that also provided a mental reprieve from the grind of cricket training and playing.
