Newcastle now preparing to launch £60m+ offer to sign "underrated" midfielder

Following the success of Nick Woltemade, Newcastle United are reportedly preparing to spend big once again to sign an impressive midfield star in 2026.

Newcastle's 2026 transfer plans

The Magpies have unfinished business in the transfer market. The majority of their summer window was spent searching for much-needed strikers before Yoane Wissa and Woltemade both arrived to replace the firepower of Alexander Isak. Now, with that problem solved, the Magpies have the chance to think about improvements elsewhere.

Just what that could entail is the big question. The transfer rumours are already coming thick and fast, with ambitious moves for the likes of Julian Brandt and Arda Guler mooted. The latter would be a particularly impressive signing, but given how he’s burst into life under Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid, there’s no doubt that it would be a difficult one to get over the line.

Whoever arrives should be keen to follow the Woltemade path. The towering striker has scored three goals in six games and has already earned the praise of manager Eddie Howe more than once.

The Newcastle boss told reporters in the build-up to Newcastle’s 4-0 thrashing of Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League: “We’re very pleased to have Nick with us. I think he’s started very strongly in what has been a difficult period for him because he’s been thrust straight into action with no training time of note with us.”

Adding further creators around the German should now be among Newcastle’s top priorities when 2026 arrives and that could yet see a big-money midfielder arrive.

Newcastle preparing £60m+ Sancet offer

According to reports in Spain, Newcastle are now preparing a €70m (£61m) offer to sign Oihan Sancet from Athletic Club in 2026. The midfielder reportedly has a release clause of €80m (£70m) in his current deal and the Magpies plan to get close to that with their first offer.

Those at St James’ Park reportedly see Sancet as the perfect player to partner Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes at the heart of Howe’s midfield, but it remains to be seen whether they’ll match his release clause to skip any negotiations with Bilbao in 2026. Looking at the numbers, it’s clear to see the talent that they would be signing.

Whilst Sancet isn’t as combative as Joelinton, he would offer Newcastle a fresh goalscoring outlet from midfield. It’s the one trait that the Magpies occasionally lack in the middle of the park, but something that the Bilbao star would provide after netting 15 goals in La Liga last season.

Dubbed “underrated” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Newcastle should do everything to sign Sancet if the opportunity arrives in 2026. The Spaniard would take Howe’s midfield to yet another level.

£135k-a-week star wants to seal 2026 Tottenham transfer amid Frank's message to Kane

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank sent a ‘welcome here anytime’ message to club legend Harry Kane in a recent press conference, but the England star may not be the only player who could seal a move to N17 in 2026.

Thomas Frank wants Harry Kane to make Tottenham return

News of a £54 million release clause in his Bayern Munich contract, which becomes active next year (BILD), has resulted in plenty of speculation about a potential homecoming for Kane.

The 32-year-old left tears in the eyes of all Lilywhites supporters after his £86 million move to Bavaria in 2023, which brought an end to his near-lifelong Spurs stay off the back of an incredible 280 goals in 435 appearances.

Since departing North London, Kane has led Bayern to a league title and German Super Cup, all whilst finishing both of his full campaigns as the Bundesliga’s top goalscorer with 36 goals in 23/24 and 26 in 24/25.

He also rounded off 2024’s Champions League as the competition’s joint-top scorer with Kylian Mbappé (8), with the prospect of a return to Tottenham being kept alive by Frank.

Not only does Kane’s deal include the release clause, which is active from January (BILD), but The Telegraph also reported in February that ex-chairman Daniel Levy negotiated a ‘first option agreement’ in potential talks for the 32-year-old.

For the first option to be valid, Bayern would have to agree to the move, as would Kane, but it is something he could seriously consider.

England’s all-time best goalscorer had his eyes on Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record for years, and is just 47 strikes away from equalling the Newcastle legend’s tally.

We’re likely to see more and more reports linking Kane with a senstional move back to N17, with his contract expiring in 2027, but another Bayern player could seal a switch to Tottenham before him.

£135,000-per-week midfielder Joao Palhinha has been a revelation for Spurs since joining on an initial loan deal. However, if the club don’t trigger Palhinha’s £27 million buy-option, he’s due back in Germany once the season ends.

Joao Palhinha wants to seal Tottenham transfer next year

That being said, there appears to be a willingness from all parties to extend his stay indefinitely.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, via GiveMeSport, Palhinha is keen to seal his move to Tottenham in 2026 and was insistent on the buy-option clause to be inserted into any deal.

The Portugal international has resurrected his career back in the Premier League after a very difficult debut season at Bayern, with Palhinha winning plenty of admirers through his robust, tough-tackling style which has added serious steel to Frank’s midfield.

The 30-year-old’s dominant display away to Man City earned a ‘wow’ from Spurs’ manager, and supporters will be hopeful the best is still yet to come.

Tonali upgrade: Newcastle preparing bid for "world-class" £61m star

Newcastle United have turned their transfer window around, having for so much time across the past several months looked to have fallen by the wayside after a terrific 2024/25 campaign.

But, despite all the drama, Howe must be delighted with how PIF have pulled through with a series of exciting signings, the latest of which comes in the form of Nick Woltemade, who has joined from Stuttgart for a club-record £69m fee.

Woltemade, 23, scored 17 goals for the German side last season, and is considered to carry a deceptive depth of skill, belying his 6 foot 6 frame.

A thrilling addition, one of the most talented young nines out there, but Woltemade’s signing does come with the caveat that he is viewed as Alexander Isak’s replacement at the front of Howe’s system.

Isak remains a Newcastle player with t-minus 24 hours remaining of the market, but his incendiary comments earlier this month and fierce desire to leave St. James’ Park and sign for Liverpool have scoured all but the slimmest hopes of a harmonious and continuing relationship between the player and club.

Newcastle have only claimed two points from their opening three fixtures of the campaign, but the quality coursing through Howe’s squad remains intact, and the wins are sure to be around the corner.

However, it wouldn’t hurt to add another player to the ranks before the market slams shut on Monday evening, and there’s a feeling from some circles that PIF are gearing up to strike a deal for one of the world’s finest midfielders.

Newcastle lining up midfielder deal

Newcastle added Jacob Ramsey to their ranks in a package rising to £40m this month, but he was withdrawn with an issue against Leeds United, and injuries to Sandro Tonali and Joelinton against Liverpool have heightened the need for a deeper-lying midfielder.

Jacob Ramsey for Newcastle

And according to Spanish reports, an ambitious move for Eduardo Camavinga has beenprepared, though it will be difficult to land the Real Madrid star, with the La Liga giants issuing a firm not-for-sale response to intrigue.

Reports from earlier this week outline the Magpies’ interest in the France international, who has been valued at €70m (equating to around £61m) at this late stage of the window.

Camavinga, 22, would be a marquee addition for the Toon, and though Los Blancos are outwardly denying any chance of him leaving, there is a feeling that a bid entering the aforementioned ballpark would be considered.

What Eduardo Camavinga would bring to Newcastle

Camavinga joined Real Madrid from Rennes in his homeland in 2021, and he has won La Liga-Champions League doubles in 2022 and 2024, featuring 180 times for the Spaniards all told.

A deep-sitting midfielder, Camavinga blends grit and gusto from number six, specialising in combative defensive work and progressive passing play.

Thanks to FBref’s data, it can be observed that the Frenchman ranks among the top 9% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 19% for progressive carries, the top 16% for successful take-ons, the top 7% for ball recoveries and the top 1% for tackles won per 90.

Tonali’s injury heightens the need for such a player, but Camavinga could even prove to be an upgrade on the Italian maestro, statistically comparable to Premier League heavyweights like Ryan Gravenberch and Moises Caicedo.

Having bounced back from a lengthy suspension last term, 25-year-old Tonali became a mainstay in the middle of the park for the Magpies, instrumental in building top form throughout the winter and winning silverware thereafter.

But Camavinga might add even more to the St. James’ Park centre.

Injuries had a prohibitive effect on Camavinga’s form and fluency in La Liga last season, but from the matches he did play, he stood out. Indeed, his dynamism and range suggest he might even prove an upgrade on Newcastle’s star.

Similar players, Camavinga would ease the workload on Tonali while ensuring that Howe is able to rotate as Newcastle challenge both domestically and in the Champions League without working to the detriment of the squad’s performance levels.

Hailed for his “world-class” quality by journalist Thom Harris, Camavinga would cost a pretty penny to bring over to Tyneside, but there’s just cause for such a mammoth bid.

Of course, reservations stemming from the rangy player’s injury record are understandable, but while Camavinga, in his finest form, has a higher ceiling and more about him than the impressive Tonali, he wouldn’t displace the Italian, but rather, jockey for a position, perhaps leading Howe to eke out the best from both players.

A strong ball-carrying presence with physicality and athleticism to take him far in the Premier League, Camavinga could hit the jackpot by stepping away from Real Madrid and rehousing in Newcastle’s midfield, where he could showcase his skills as a talismanic part of Howe’s project, raising the level of those around him too.

Having enjoyed a trophy-laden start to his career, Camavinga could bring that mentality to the Premier League and take Newcastle to the next level, with the English club having enjoyed a taste of true success at the highest level and now hungering for more.

Liverpool close in on late signing who'd have a bigger impact than Ekitike

Liverpool succeeded in claiming three points to start their title defence, defeating Bournemouth on a frenetic evening at Anfield.

However, as cool as Arne Slot comes across, he will know full well that his Liverpool have plenty of work to ply if they hope to retain their Premier League crown while fighting for silverware across the campaign’s various other fronts.

In particular, Liverpool have looked exposed in defence twice in one week since the 2025/26 season kicked off, with the Cherries coming from two goals down before Federico Chiesa’s last magic on Friday after Crystal Palace restored parity twice in the Community Shield before going on to lift the trophy.

Hugo Ekitike scores for Liverpool

Though we all hope to see greater balance at Liverpool over the coming weeks, with the equilibrium restored, but while a new defender and the fluency between the central and deeper thirds left something to be desired, it’s actually the frontline which might receive some attention, with Alexander Isak desperate to rival the impressive Hugo Ekitike for that number nine berth.

Federico Chiesa celebrates for Liverpool

The latest on Isak to Liverpool

Liverpool’s pursuit of Newcastle United’s star striker continues to drag on. Isak is desperate to complete a move to Merseyside and is on strike from Eddie Howe’s squad, but the Magpies are adamant they will not sanction his departure without signing suitable replacements, and that has yet to happen.

Given that Anfield sporting director Richard Hughes has already seen a formal £100m offer, plus add-ons, rejected this month, Liverpool will only make their move once encouraged by Toon officials. This has clearly not happened yet.

Of course, the issue is that Ekitike has started his Reds career off in resounding fashion, scoring in both of his appearances for Liverpool so far, and assisting against Bournemouth too.

Hugo-Ekitike-Liverpool stats

Hailed for his “brilliant start” to life in England by Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher, Ekitike’s prolific opening to life as a Liverpool striker bodes well for the future, and even tempers the need for a free-scoring centre-forward such as Isak, especially with improvements needed in other areas.

And despite Liverpool signing young centre-half Giovanni Leoni from Parma for a £26m fee last week, the hunt remains on for a high-level defender.

Liverpool still chasing defender

As per reports from Spain, Liverpool remain focused on completing a late-window deal for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi this month, even with Steve Parish proving to be a difficult negotiator.

Guehi, 25, has entered the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, and despite hitches in discussions so far, it’s reported that Liverpool are closing in on landing the England international for a £35m fee.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Whether FSG pull the difficult deal off remains to be seen, but Guehi wants to join, and things are expected to come to a head shortly.

Why Liverpool want to sign Marc Guehi

Guehi has certainly had an eventful start to the fresh campaign, starring as Crystal Palace beat Liverpool to lift the Community Shield before keeping a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge, albeit culpable for Eberechi Eze’s fantastic free-kick being ruled out too.

And the spotlight will continue to shine on him if he completes a move to Liverpool, with those of a Reds persuasion sure to expect him to be the “monster in defence”, as commented by Palace reporter Bobby Manzi, that he has established a reputation as while with the Eagles.

A sturdy centre-back with a high-level technical game and a composed approach that offers shades of one Virgil van Dijk, Guehi appears tailor-made for Liverpool, and the impact he makes on Slot’s squad could be quite a thing.

Marc Guehi for Crystal Palace

Ekitike has earned the plaudits for his performances since swapping Eintracht Frankfurt for Liverpool, but Guehi has what it takes to enjoy an even finer start to life at Liverpool, should Hughes and co manage to close a deal in the coming weeks.

An accomplished Premier League defender who has now captained his side toward two domestic trophies in a matter of months, Guehi knows the English scene well and could prove to be the missing piece in the puzzle for an Anfield side questing for more glory.

Ibrahima Konate’s future is up in the air, and he played like it against Bournemouth, with Carragher noting he was “all over the place” against Andoni Iraola’s well-oiled and lively outfit.

In contrast, Guehi proves a pillar of strength and calmness for Palace, and if Slot can secure that version of the Three Lions star, he could prove the cream of Liverpool’s transfer window, outstripping Ekitike and ensuring this club advances toward the next illustrious chapter.

FBref have recorded that Guehi ranks among the top 11% of centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 10% for key passes and the top 2% for through balls per 90, so he’s not just a tough-tackling ‘monster’, but a cultured and Liverpool-fit defensive presence besides.

Given that Guehi is the complete package and has enough Premier League experience to do it at the hhighest level week in, week out, he might just prove to be the answer to Slot’s issues, reinforcing the backline while weaving together the fluency on the ball that would favour the likes of Ekitike and fellow recruit Florian Wirtz in finding their feet.

In any case, it’s paramount that FSG seal this deal, lest Liverpool find themselves sold short at critical moments across the term.

'A real beacon of hope' – CA sees Afghanistan women's match as first step

Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley has described Thursday’s exhibition match featuring an Afghanistan Women’s XI in Melbourne as the first small step towards playing international cricket saying it is a ‘real beacon of hope’ that should spark conversations globally. An Afghanistan women’s cricket team, consisting of refugees who now live in Australia, will play a T20 match between against a Cricket Without Borders XI at the Junction Oval in Melbourne on Thursday morning ahead of the opening day of the day-night Women’s Ashes Test at the MCG that starts in the afternoon. It is the first time they have been able to come together as a group since leaving their country following the Taliban takeover, with half of the group settling in Canberra while the other half settled in Melbourne.Related

Hockley spoke alongside two of the Afghanistan XI players, Nahida Sapan and Firooza Amiri, on Monday at the Junction Oval, with Sapan announced as the captain for the match. Cricket Without Borders Chair Clare Cannon, Director Ken Jacobs and Australia’s Federal Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Tim Watts were also present as the organisation of the match has been a joint effort between, CA, Cricket Without Borders and the Australian government.Hockley was hopeful that this match will be the first of many playing opportunities for the Afghanistan women in the future and indicated that the England and Wales Cricket Board were keen to help promote their cause after captain Heather Knight met the exiled Afghanistan female players in Melbourne earlier this month.”I think this is a first step,” Hockley said. “We’ve got colleagues from the ECB coming out for the women’s Ashes, and there are conversations happening to support from England as well as from Australia. But both players were overjoyed at the opportunity to play in an Afghanistan Women’s XI.”It’s really special for us, especially for Afghan women because this is a very historic moment for all Afghan women,” Sapan said. “We have a big hopes for this match, because this match can open doors for Afghan women, for education, sport and future. We don’t want this to be our first and last match. We want more matches. We had couple of camps together, but it’s going to be our first match. We’re looking for a win.”Australia currently do not play Afghanistan in bilateral fixtures but continue to face them in ICC events and are in the same group for next month’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE.

The Rondo: Assessing Inter Miami – Given Lionel Messi's current form and consecutive 3-0 losses, are Javier Mascherano's side still legitimate MLS Cup contenders?

An underwhelming weekend loss to Charlotte FC highlighted flaws, raising questions about Miami's 2025 silverware credentials

And with one poorly hit shot, everything went wrong. Lionel Messi broke out a panenka from the penalty spot against Charlotte FC Saturday night. And instead of sending the goalkeeper fumbling the wrong way, it fell feebly into his arms. It was rough to see – and not only because failed panenkas might be the saddest sight in soccer.

It was also a bit of a microcosm of Miami's performance against Charlotte: limp. The Herons didn't offer much at all going forward, and were well beaten on three occasions. Charlotte won 3-0, and no one could say the scoreline didn't accurately reflect the caliber of the two sides on the pitch.

More broadly, it showed just about where Miami are right now. This is a struggling side, far off the MLS Cup favorites that a fair few had pegged them for at the start of the season. It was Miami's second straight 3-0 loss, following their blanking by the Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final – the Herons face Seattle again Tuesday in MLS, this time at home.

Yet when there is Messi, there is hope. But how can it be fixed outside of the Argentine? Is manager Javier Mascherano – or his tactical approach – the problem?

GOAL US writers assess struggling Miami in the latest edition of… The Rondo.

Getty Images SportWhat's the key takeaway from the loss to Charlotte?

Tom Hindle: Well, the scoreline wasn't exactly a barnstormer. It looked like many Miami performances over the last couple of years: they have a lot of the ball, Messi does some fun things. But they're so vulnerable on the break. If Messi buries that penalty, then maybe things look a bit different – vibes and momentum are frightfully important in this game. So, is it bad? Sure, in the sense that they lost heavily to an Eastern Conference rival. But it was entirely predictable.

Alejandro Orellana: In football, there are different types of defeats, but Miami's loss to Charlotte highlights a big gap between the teams that are championship contenders and those that are not. The 3-0 defeat, added to the final loss in the Leagues Cup, paints a clear picture of the teams that will be fighting for MLS Cup – and right now, it's hard to see  Mascherano’s team in that race. During the transfer window, Miami failed to cover up its weaknesses, despite the signing of Rodrigo de Paul. On the other hand, Dean Smith’s team secured their ninth consecutive win and appeared a stronger, better-coached side that doesn't rely on just one player – unlike Miami with Messi.

Alex Labidou: There’s no shame in losing to Charlotte, a team that has tied the all-time record win streak in MLS. Rather, it is the way that it happened, and the timing. Inter Miami were coming off the Leagues Cup final and had 14 days to prepare. Outside of an inspired opening 20-30 minutes, Miami were easily outdone by the counterattack  – an issue that has plagued them since last season. In soccer, a forfeit is considered a 3-0 defeat. Based on what was shown Saturday, maybe Miami should’ve considered that.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWhat is Miami's most glaring weakness?

TH: The same it has been for 18 months: there's no defensive structure in this team. They're too old to press high convincingly, and don't have the legs on the break to drop deep, either. The logical solution is to piece together a truly balanced system, and that hasn't worked out for 90 minutes. You can't really highlight individuals as much as a collective here.

AO: Miami has many weaknesses across all positions, and the team seems to depend entirely on Messi’s form. If Messi comes out on fire, the show is guaranteed. But if the Argentine star is contained or just not having a good day – as happened on Saturday and in the Leagues Cup final – Miami look like a broken machine. The spine of the team is made up of veterans: Messi, De Paul, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suárez. Those are intimidating names- no one would want to face them. But the reality is that they are players in the twilight of their careers and no longer able to consistently compete with the emerging MLS talent.

AL: Miami’s biggest weaknesses are poor roster construction and tactical inflexibility. Outside of the second half of the Leagues Cup final, Mascherano has largely relied on a 4-4-2, playing Messi as a second striker. De Paul, one of the world’s best box-to-box midfielders, has been largely miscast in a wide midfielder role. You’re paying this man a lot of money to play a role he’s largely unfamiliar with and is taking him away from what he does best in the center of the pitch. Mascherano clearly doesn’t trust Fafa Picault to start games – or play much at all – and the team doesn’t have options like last season when it could rely on Robert Taylor or Julian Gressel to occasionally step up. All of that is concerning when Miami’s top two attacking options are 38 years old.

Getty Images SportDoes Miami's form cloud Messi's future?

TH: Yes? No? Maybe? All of the noise from the man himself suggests that he will still be wearing Miami pink at a brand new stadium next season. But the few months after the campaign will be interesting. Everyone's favorite rumor is a little Barca loan, but that'll be hard – if not impossible. In an ideal world he gets to rest up, perform next season, and play at the World Cup for Argentina.

AO: Messi’s future will never be in doubt. He’s the greatest player of all time, and he’ll stop when he decides to stop. Until that happens, nothing will change. Whatever fuel he has left in the tank – a lot or a little – is a type of fuel every team in the world would love to have. When it comes to Inter Miami, he remains the most invaluable player on the roster.

AL: He hasn’t signed an extension, and he already hinted he might not play in the 2026 World Cup. Considering a lot of Messi’s reported motivation for playing was getting ready to help Argentina defend their status as world champions, there should be alarm bells ringing in South Beach. He's mentioned that injuries could be a factor, and he has not looked the same since suffering an knock at the start of the Leagues Cup. Injury-related or not, he doesn’t have the same explosiveness that he showed at the start of the season. It appears increasingly likely that Messi will consider retirement following this season.

GettyAre Miami legitimate MLS Cup contenders?

TH: There are probably four or five better in front of them, but how many of them have Messi? Cincinnati seem to be the team to beat in the East, and you'd back San Diego, Vancouver and Seattle in the West. The funny thing is, no matter how much they struggle, the Messi effect simply cannot be ignored.

AO: Don’t see them winning the trophy, but as long as you have Messi, you can never fully count them out. The real problem is Mascherano, who has shown time and again that the job is too big for him. The “Messi and Friends” group needs to move on, because Mascherano isn’t going to lead them to a championship. At times, the Herons have looked solid, but in other moments, the team has fallen apart. The manager doesn’t seem to have what it takes to win a title.

AL: That might be Miami's goal, but there are at least six teams that are better equipped to win the title: LAFC, Seattle, FC Cincinnati, Minnesota, Vancouver and Charlotte. And that’s not even including conference-leading Philadelphia, who have shown some inconsistencies, and San Diego, which is trying to win it all in their first season. The age and lack of depth of this Miami team, tied with their tactical issues, mean they likely won’t be lifting the Cup this season. As NFL coach Bill Parcells once said, you are what your record says you are – and right now Miami are eighth in the East.

Women's domestic players to be granted basic salary equality from 2025

England’s women cricketers have taken another step towards gender parity, with minimum starting salaries in domestic cricket set to be equalised across the men’s and women’s professional games from 2025.The move, which will coincide with the first season of the new women’s county competition, will apply both at ‘Rookie’ level, which is being introduced into the women’s game for the first time, and at ‘Senior Pro’ level for players who have established themselves in first teams. The announcement comes in the wake of the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) report in June 2023, which called for a “fundamental overhaul” to the pay structure of women’s cricket in England and Wales. The report found that the average England Women’s salary was 20.6% of their male equivalents (although the ECB considered that figure to be closer to 30%), and set targets for equalising pay at domestic level by 2029 and for internationals by 2030.Although the ECB pushed back at the report’s timeframe for achieving full parity across the sport, their commitment to minimum salaries reflects the need to offer an equality of opportunity for young players considering cricket as a career choice. At the time of the report’s publication, the minimum salary for male first-class county players was in the region of £27,500.This latest move follows last summer’s announcement that England’s women would receive equal match fees for international fixtures, which had been an immediate recommendation in the ICEC report.”Equalising starting salaries across our men’s and women’s professional domestic game is another positive step forward for women’s cricket in England and Wales,” Beth Barrett-Wild, Director of Women’s Professional Game, said.”The changes we’ve made to the structure of women’s domestic cricket across the last nine months have been about producing a sustainable and viable product that’s attractive off the pitch, as well as being quality on it. As part of this, it’s important that our players are remunerated appropriately, and that cricket is seen not just as a viable career option for women, but an enticing one.”Increasingly, every decision we take is about making cricket as attractive a sport for young girls as it is for boys. We know we still have a lot of work to do in this space. But we are moving at pace, and the news today represents another significant building block in the journey to gender equity in the game.”The ECB has also confirmed that the eight Tier 1 counties in the new women’s competition will have minimum squad sizes of 15 contracted players, with each of the first-class counties required to invest at least £500,000 on their player salary costs in 2025. A salary cap of £800,000 per year has also been agreed for those clubs.PCA Director of Player Rights and Women’s Cricket, Emma Reid, said: “Working with the ECB and the professional game, we are really pleased to see equalised minimum salaries across the men’s and women’s domestic game from 2025.”This is a big step towards reaching parity and a journey that the PCA is fully committed to achieving, but there is still further work to do. With the women’s teams under the umbrella of the First-Class Counties, the PCA will continue to lobby for parity across all areas of the professional game.”The starting salaries and salary budget details have been approved by the ECB’s Professional Game Committee (PGC), which features representatives from FCCs, the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) and the ECB.The announcement came in advance of the ECB’s one-year update on its progress towards equity in cricket, in the wake of its initial response to the 137 recommendations and sub-recommendations outlined in the ICEC report. The measures introduced have included the appointment of the Cricket Regulator as an independent, arm’s length disciplinary body, and an additional investment of £2 million in the ECB’s pathways programmes.Richard Thompson, ECB Chair, said: “A year ago, we published our response to the ICEC report into racism, sexism and class-based discrimination in cricket.”We made a commitment to wide-ranging action aimed at tackling discrimination and breaking down barriers for women and girls, people from lower socio-economic groups, and ethnically diverse communities, and today I’m pleased to report on the progress we have made in that time.”But we know there is much more work to do and it’s only the start of the journey. We have a number of plans and structures in place to allow us to accelerate change through 2025 and 2026. And we recognise that in some areas lasting, meaningful change will take a long time.”This article was updated at 1pm BST, September 25, 2024, following the publication of the ECB’s progress report
