England's 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka is a terrific achievement

England have now won five successive overseas Tests, but face sterner stuff in India

George Dobell25-Jan-2021It perhaps best puts England’s achievement in winning five successive overseas Tests in context by understanding that, the last time they did it – they actually won seven in a row between 1911 and 1914 – Jack Hobbs was in the side, George V was on the throne and Archduke Franz Ferdinand was still thinking ‘this afternoon might be a lovely opportunity for a drive’.There have been long passages in the history of England cricket when to win anywhere – let alone in Asia – was enough to spark national celebrations and MBEs all round. To do so five times in succession? Make no mistake, this is a terrific achievement. We do have to acknowledge that England’s opponents – especially Sri Lanka – have not been at their best. And yes, we probably do have to acknowledge that preparing to face a daunting India side with games against this version of Sri Lanka is a bit like warming up for a bout against Tyson Fury by taking Thora Hird for tea.Related

Joe Root – England 'couldn't be in better place' for India challenge

But England have faced substantial challenges of their own in recent months. To come through them and complete these victories does reflect a certain amount of resilience and character. They have now won four successive Test series under their new coach, Chris Silverwood, and established a template based around substantial first-innings totals which has seen them win eight and lose one of their most recent 11 Tests.Don’t forget: England (and, to be fair, Sri Lanka) came into this series without the usual preparation time. They had to make do with just one day of inter-squad cricket on a green surface in Hambantota. They were also without at least four first-choice players in Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Ollie Pope and Rory Burns and one more probable selection in Moeen Ali. They lost the toss in both games, too, which in these conditions is a significant disadvantage. And just because you don’t hear them moaning about the privations of life in the bubble, don’t think it’s not hard. It is lonely, it is dull and it is frustrating. But they’ve all bought into it in the knowledge that English cricket – world cricket, even – needs these tours to take place to prevent financial meltdown. The game owes them plenty. The final day of the series could scarcely have gone better for England had Silverwood scripted it. His under-pressure bowlers took wickets; his under-pressure batsmen (well, most of them) scored runs. They even bowled out Sri Lanka quickly enough – in 35.5 overs – to engineer an extra day on the beach on Tuesday. They couldn’t have reasonably hoped for better. This was an especially big day for England’s spinners. They had struggled to perform the required role in the first innings. It wasn’t just that they finished wicketless – it was the first time since 2001 that seamers had claimed all 10 wickets in a Test innings in Sri Lanka – but that only seven of their 64 overs were maidens. That inability to perform a holding role meant both Mark Wood and James Anderson were obliged to bowl more overs than Dom Bess.In the second innings, they found conditions more helpful. There wasn’t, by any means, vast turn. But there was enough to sow some seeds of doubt in the mind of batsmen who didn’t know which balls would turn and which would go straight on. As a result, Bess and Jack Leach’s skills – which, by the high standards of Test cricket might be described as relatively modest – were brought into play. That’s not meant to sound harsh. Leach, for example, is an admirably consistent bowler. He rarely bowls poorly – yes, there have been some loose balls on this tour, but he did come into it without much cricket over the last 14 months – and, under that everyman exterior, has proved he has more resilience than might immediately be apparent. Illness, injury, a remodeled action: he has come back from plenty. But he doesn’t gain a huge amount of turn. He doesn’t boast deceptive drift or devastating dip. There were times in the first innings when he looked a bit toothless. In conditions providing assistance, however, he really can play a part. You don’t need extravagant turn on such surfaces; you don’t need to be Shane Warne or Murali. Instead, Leach’s ability to put enough balls in the right area, vary his pace and flight a little and gain some natural variation, is enough. This is where bowling in helpful conditions at Taunton has come in handy. Instead of chasing the game, as a more inexperienced bowler might have done, both Leach and Bess were content to bide their time, build spells and trust their own skills and the pitch to do the rest. And for all their limitations, the fact is Bess claimed 12 wickets at 21.25 in these two games and produced an important innings on day three of this game. Yes, that’s flattering. But for a player in development, he keeps finding a way to contribute. There is a chance that, in India, they will be able to replicate such performances on the fourth and fifth days. Generally, though, pitches in India are flat and full of runs for the first three or four days. It would represent a significant tactical error if they present England with the sort of turning surface which might bring England’s spinners into play.We have to acknowledge, too, that some of Sri Lanka’s batting was of a modest standard. The aim on the fourth day, no doubt, was calculated aggression. Instead, they hacked and heaved their way into recklessness. Their 126 here was not quite as poor as their 135 in the first Test – there was almost no assistance in the surface on that occasion – but it was an unusually frenetic, soft display. It’s hard to imagine India selling their wickets so cheaply in the forthcoming series. But this is, very often, the way of modern cricket. When conditions favour bowlers, batsmen invariably attempt to hit their way to safety. It’s a scenario that reflects the predominance of limited-overs cricket, certainly, but also the decline in defensive techniques. Had Sri Lanka’s batsmen trusted their defensive game, they surely would have reacted differently to this situation. As an aside, you wonder if the ECB would have penalised a county side producing a surface like this. A pitch where Sri Lanka’s left-arm spinner, Lasith Embuldeniya, opened the bowling and claimed two wickets in his first 19 balls. A pitch where spin claimed 23 of the final 24 wickets to fall in the match, with the other accounted for by a run-out. Some of Somerset’s opponents have bleated like lambs after their experiences in Taunton. But as preparation for Test cricket in Sri Lanka or Bangladesh, in particular, they do a decent job. If other counties did the same, England’s pool of spinners – and their pool of batsmen who could play spin bowling – would increase rapidly. This was a big day for Dom Sibley, too. He came into this innings having scored six in three innings in the series so far. With Ben Stokes and, more pertinently, Rory Burns returning to the squad for the India series, his place in the side is likely to be squeezed. He really needed some runs. And England really needed him to score some, too.Sibley’s technique would appear to be in transition at present. He hasn’t worked with Gary Palmer, the coach who advocates an open stance and who revitalised his career a few years ago, for some time. So while he still stands open, he then plonks his front foot down the pitch and ends up playing across it. This negates the purpose of the open stance and leaves him a major leg before risk. Three times here he was the beneficiary of umpire’s call decisions. He has few release shots, either. Rarely did he look comfortable; not for a moment did he look pretty. But he watches the ball hard, he has a strong mind and he has remarkable patience. In playing back more often that he had previously and trusting himself to adapt to the turn, he found a way to prosper. And in seeing his side over the line in the fourth-innings, he did what many more celebrated players have not managed.Dom Sibley overcame a tough start to the tour•Getty ImagesAnd then there was Jos Buttler. Buttler has, upon occasion, batted as well as this. He was excellent on the previous tour of Sri Lanka, for example, and very good in the recently-completed series against Pakistan. Here he produced a couple of fluent innings to take the pressure off his partners.Perhaps more significantly, he has never kept better. Yes, he’s been pretty good standing back to the seamers for a while. But standing up to spin, he had sometimes looked an accident waiting to happen. Here he took the ball cleanly as often as any keeper could hope and looked a far improved player. With that in mind, there will be those calling for him to remain with the squad in India for the entire Test series. But it is right that Buttler heads home after the first Test. He looked more jaded than anyone following their World Cup win and is clearly better when refreshed. Who is to say whether the prospect of a break hasn’t helped him produce his best form here? Such freedom worked wonders for Sir Alastair Cook in his final Test, after all. With Joe Root batting as well as he has in years and Stuart Broad and Anderson showing no signs of decline despite their years, England head to India in as fine fettle as they could possibly have hoped. There will, you suspect, be some mightily tough days in the coming weeks. Nobody is suggesting England are anything but underdogs. But in 107 more years, it’s entirely possible a new generation of supporters will look back on these results and think ‘five in a row; imagine that’. Whatever happens next, this has been an admirable achievement.

Inside the Numbers of Mookie Betts’s Sudden Decline

The man wearing No. 50 for the Los Angeles Dodgers looks decidedly different this season.

Mookie Betts is in the midst of the most baffling season of his career, one that, to this point, defies explanation. The star shortstop is recording career lows across the board on offense despite playing in all but nine of L.A.'s games and is rating as a below-average hitter for the first time in his career. His struggles at the plate have led to some serious questions for the defending World Series champions.

With Betts looking like a shell of himself, the Dodgers have a big hole at the top of their lineup just as the season heads for the stretch. L.A. has a 4 1/2 game lead in the National League West, but their recent struggles have made a repeat championship look less likely. They need their star to hit like he's capable of doing.

Given what we’re used to seeing from the eight-time All-Star, his Statcast page is downright depressing. While his plate discipline rates have remained elite, his batted-ball metrics have sharply declined.

What follows is a look inside the numbers of Betts’s most challenging season to capture the wide-ranging nature of his travails.

3 — Home runs in the last 49 games for Betts. In that time he is slugging .307 with an OPS of .578.

91— Betts's wRC+ this season, the lowest of his career, meaning he’s been 9% worse than the average MLB hitter. It’s 49 points lower than his 2024 number (140), 74 lower than in 2023 (165), and 94 lower than his career-best of 185 in 2019.

.238 — Betts's batting average, the lowest of his career by 26 points, and 51 points lower than in 2024.

.146 — Betts’s batting average against breaking balls, down from .250 last season and .309 in 2023.

.309 — His on-base percentage, the lowest of Betts's career by 31 points, and 63 points lower than in 2024.

.370 — Slugging percentage, the lowest of Betts's career by 74 points. The previous low came during his rookie season in 2014. It's also 121 points lower than in 2024.

.679 OPS, the lowest of his career, 184 points lower than in 2024 (.863) and 308 points lower than in 2023.

.317 — Expected weighted on base percentage, the lowest of Betts's career and 114 points lower than his career-best of .431 in 2018. It is also 39 points lower than in 2024.

.404 — Expected slugging percentage, the lowest of his career, 43 points lower than in 2024 and 202 points lower than his career-best in 2018.

5.5 — Betts's barrel percentage, which is 0.5 points lower than in 2024, but 6.9 points lower than in 2023, and 8.6 lower than his career-best (14.1) in 2018.

34.1 — His hard hit percentage, a career-low, 5.4 points worse than last season and 14.4 percent worse than 2023.

83.8 — His contact percentage, which measures the percentage of time he makes contact when swinging at pitches. This will shock you but it's the lowest of his career.

88.3 — Betts's average exit velocity, down 4.1 mph from his career-high of 92.4 in 2023. And, yes, a career-low.

68.8 — Betts’s bat speed, which ranks in only the 11th percentile of MLB. It’s also down 2.5 mph from 2023, when he ranked in the 38th percentile.

66.7% — The percentage of games the Dodgers won through April 14, when Betts’s OPS was .954.

56.5% — The percentage of games the Dodgers have won since April 15, during which Betts is slashing .226/.292/.338 for an OPS of .630. Los Angeles is still a good team without Betts at his best, but his performance could be the difference between a good and great Dodgers team.

270 million — Amount of dollars left on Betts's contract after this season, with seven years remaining. That total includes $115 million in deferred money he'll receive from 2033 through '44. His luxury tax hit will be $30.4 million annually.

Betts is an eight-time All-Star, a seven-time Silver Slugger, a three-time World Series champion and the 2018 American League MVP. He deserves more time to work out of this months-long slump. The Dodgers haven't suffered terribly even with him struggling and their typical wave of pitching injuries, as they still have a decent lead atop the NL West.

It's possible the move to shortstop has had an impact on Betts. He's 32 with a slight built at 5'10" and 180 pounds if you buy his measurements. The physical toll of playing short every day could be contributing to his struggles at the plate.

The Dodgers could move Betts back to the outfield—where he's a six-time Gold Glove winner—and take some of the daily wear off of him, but their lack of infield talent is an issue. Miguel Rojas, Hyeseong Kim and Tommy Edman aren't top-level replacements, and it's far easier to find a corner outfielder than an everyday shortstop.

It’s also possible one of baseball’s most consistent performers of the last decade is entering the next, less productive stage of his career. The decline in bat speed coinciding with reduced exit velocity especially backs up that concerning notion. Perhaps a change in approach is needed before the playoffs begin and the games really start to matter for the Dodgers.

He’s like Caicedo: Man Utd ready bid to sign England’s “best CM since Scholes”

Elite central midfielders cost a pretty penny in the transfer market in the modern day, but Manchester United are trying to find their next top talent in such an area.

Over the years, the Red Devils have previously been home to numerous incredible talents, with Paul Scholes one of the best midfielders to ever play for the club.

The Englishman made a staggering total of 718 appearances for the club over a 19-year period, subsequently winning every major honour available in the 1990s and 2000s.

He was part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad that often dominated England’s top-flight, subsequently being a part of the squad that managed to win 11 Premier League titles.

However, in the present day, boss Ruben Amorim is yet to taste glory in the division, with the potential moves for numerous players potentially aiding his quest for success.

Man Utd ready big-money bid for new midfielder

Over the last couple of weeks, United have once again been labelled as one of the sides interested in a potential winter deal to land Brighton & Hove Albion star Carlos Baleba.

It’s been reported that Amorim’s men could look to revisit such a move in the months ahead, with Fabian Hurzeler’s side once again expected to demand a fee in the region of £100m.

However, the Red Devils are likely unwilling to fork out such a fee, especially after rejecting a move for the Cameroonian in the summer after a similar price tag was mooted.

He’s not the only midfielder currently in INEOS’ sights, as Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton has once again appeared on their radar over the last couple of days.

According to one Spanish outlet, Amorim’s men are set to make a €100m (£87m) offer to sign the 21-year-old when the winter window opens on January 1st.

It also states that the Eagles don’t want to part ways with their young talent, but could be forced to cash in if a bid of such a nature is to be made in the near future.

How Wharton compares to Caicedo

As previously mentioned, big money is currently being spent in the transfer market on midfield talent – with Moises Caicedo the best example of such a scenario in 2023.

The Ecuadorian international joined Chelsea for a reported £115m two years ago – a then English record – but it has since been broken by striker Alexander Isak.

However, such a deal now appears to be an excellent one despite the mammoth sum forked out for his signature, with the 24-year-old currently one of the best midfielders in Europe.

He was named as the Blues’ Player and Supporters Player of the Season for 2024/25, with clubs like United no doubt wishing they had their own version of the midfielder.

Whilst landing such a player would also cost a pretty penny, the Red Devils fans could get their wish of getting a similar calibre of player if they complete a move for Wharton.

The Englishman has been labelled as a similar player to Caicedo by FBref, with the Palace star even managing to outperform the Blues sensation in numerous key areas.

Wharton has registered more key passes and more passes into the final third per 90 to date, arguably making him a better ball-playing option at the base of the midfield.

Whilst being composed with the ball is key in Amorim’s system, the manager is desperately craving a dominant ball-winner who can sit and conduct the play in front of the backline.

The Palace star has demonstrated just that, even bettering the Chelsea star in that aspect, as seen by his higher tally of tackles won in the middle third of the pitch this campaign.

Wharton’s all-round dominance over the former English record addition is highlighted in his better take-on success rate and higher tally of recoveries made per 90 – which has led to one coach dubbing him the “best English midfielder since Scholes”. It sounds a stretch but given the numbers and clamour from many Three Lions supporters to see him alongside Declan Rice at next summer’s World Cup, it’s easy to see why that assessment has been made.

£87m may seem a mammoth sum for such a young talent, but it’s evident that the Englishman has bags of ability, but not to mention the potential to improve further in the years ahead.

If he can replicate such numbers at Old Trafford, he would certainly become a fan-favourite, potentially emulating Scholes in helping the club create new history in the Premier League.

Baseball's Top Prospect Roman Anthony Made His First Big League Hit Count

Boston Red Sox rookie outfielder and baseball's top prospect Roman Anthony made his major league debut on Monday night, going hitless in four at-bats, while driving in a run on an RBI groundout in Boston's 10-8 extra innings loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

While Anthony already notched his first career RBI, he had to wait until Tuesday night to collect his first hit at the major league level. On his first at-bat of the night in the bottom of the first inning, Anthony took a Ryan Pepiot changeup the other way, hitting an RBI double into left field off the Green Monster.

Anthony's first hit of his career helped the Red Sox jump out to an early 2-0 lead on Tuesday night.

Anthony's family was unable to be at his first major league game on Monday night, as the rookie was not called up until late in the afternoon, just a few hours before first pitch.

Even though they couldn't attend his first career major league game, they were front-and-center by the Red Sox dugout on Tuesday night, taking the atmosphere in after Anthony drove in two runs.

Clearly there were plenty of emotions from the family after seeing the top prospect's first career hit.

There will certainly be plenty more hits to come for Anthony as he formally embarks on his major league career.

Casemiro's stance on new contract as Man Utd make U-turn and contact his agent

Manchester United have now made a U-turn and made contact with Casemiro’s agent over a new contract, and the midfielder’s stance on signing a new deal has been revealed.

Kobbie Mainoo has been unable to get a look-in as of late, with Ruben Amorim predominantly opting to give the former Real Madrid man the nod in central midfield, alongside Bruno Fernandes, who has been utilised in a deeper role this season.

Consequently, it is now looking increasingly likely that Mainoo will depart in the January transfer window, with the youngster potentially in line to follow Scott McTominay to Napoli, despite the fact Amorim wants to keep hold of him.

With the central midfielder’s place in the World Cup squad at stake, it is understandable that he is looking to receive more game time ahead of the summer, but Amorim is in a tricky position, given that Casemiro has been indispensable this term.

Recently, the 33-year-old has even been compared to United icon Nemanja Vidic, and it has subsequently emerged that he could be rewarded with a new contract as a result of his fine form, despite widespread reports suggesting United have been hesitant to offer him fresh terms.

Casemiro's stance on signing new contract at Man Utd revealed

According to a report from United In Focus, Man United have now performed a U-turn and contacted the midfielder’s agent about a contract extension, with transfer expert Graeme Bailey revealing Amorim’s stance on one of his star players signing a new deal.

Bailey said: “I’m told Amorim would be open to him staying, and if Casemiro is ready to take a drop in salary and work with United on a deal, it is not inconceivable that he stays.”

Not only is the manager open to keeping hold of the veteran midfielder, but the player himself is also personally receptive to the idea of remaining at Old Trafford, and positive talks have already been held.

The ex-Real Madrid star has certainly turned a corner since Jamie Carragher infamously told him he was finished at the top level and to move to Saudi Arabia or the MLS.

Indeed, the 80-time Brazil international has only missed one Premier League match this season, which was due to suspension, amassing three goals and one assist in his opening ten matches.

Of course, the five-time Champions League winner is more well-known for his stellar defensive attributes, and his ability to win back possession has been on display regularly over the past year, averaging 4.09 tackles per 90, which places the maestro in the top 1% of midfielders.

Consequently, it would make sense to offer Casemiro a new deal, but it would have to be at reduced wages, given his age, with the central midfielder currently the highest-earning player in the squad.

Every 2025/26 Premier League club's ticket prices

Matchday tickets to watch live football appear to be going up with every season, pricing out the regular punters who have supported their teams for years.

The Premier League is known as the richest division in the world due to its globally distributed broadcasting deals, but how much do the 20 clubs charge supporters to watch a match live?

All 20 Premier League managers' salaries (lowest to highest)

How much each Premier League gaffer earns.

ByCharlie Smith Oct 21, 2025

Here is a look at ticket prices for every Premier League side for the 2025/26 campaign, looking at their cheapest and most expensive ticket excluding hospitality.

20 Sunderland Most expensive ticket: £46

Back in the Premier League after eight years away, Sunderland have the least expensive matchday ticket at just £46.

The Black Cats supporters were treated to some brilliant displays straightaway at the Stadium of Light, making this value for money.

19 Burnley Most expensive ticket: £55

Burnley also won promotion in 2025 and are one of the cheapest to watch in the Premier League.

Tickets start at just £30 and reach £55.

18 Bournemouth Most expensive ticket: £56

Bournemouth have been enjoying their finest Premier League football under Andoni Iraola.

At £56 for a ticket, they are the third-cheapest club on this list, however, prices may well go up should they qualify for Europe this term.

17 Leeds Most expensive ticket: £59

Leeds are the most expensive of the three promoted sides from the Championship, with the most expensive Elland Road ticket sitting at £59.

A stadium expansion is planned to increase capacity to over 50,000, and it’ll be interesting to see whether prices rise in Yorkshire as well.

16 Manchester City Most expensive ticket: £60

Manchester City may be going through their roughest spell since Pep Guardiola took charge in 2016, but compared to other clubs, their most expensive matchday ticket is a reasonable £60.

At £30 for the cheapest ticket at the Etihad, City fans can also get some decent value for seeing their team perform in the Premier League. Given they won the titles four years in a row, this figure isn’t too steep.

15 Liverpool Most expensive ticket: £61

Considering Liverpool’s success domestically and in Europe, it is admirable that their most expensive matchday ticket is £61, which ranks them relatively low on this list.

The club froze all ticket prices for the 2025/26 season. Not a bad price to watch the defending champions if you can get your hand on a ticket.

14 Brentford Most expensive ticket: £65

Brentford are now an established Premier League side, having secured promotion to the top flight back in 2021.

The Bees have never finished lower than 16th in the table. The most expensive matchday ticket at the club currently is £65, with no increases for the 2025/26 campaign.

13 Newcastle Most expensive ticket: £70

Newcastle United once again secured Champions League football for the second time in three seasons and won their first piece of silverware for 70 years in 2025 under Eddie Howe.

The most expensive Magpies ticket is £70, with the price of the cheapest ticket being £55.

12 Nottingham Forest Most expensive ticket: £70

Nottingham Forest’s most expensive matchday costs £70, which has increased after qualifying for Europe in 2025.

The cheapest option currently stands at £50, and the supporters going to the City Ground have seen three managers in the dugout during 2025/26.

11 Wolves Most expensive ticket: £71

Wolverhampton Wanderers have work to do if they are to avoid dropping into the Championship, with major unrest at Molineux.

Despite their poor season, the most expensive matchday ticket is £71 at Molineux, hardly worth the value considering. The cheapest is £26.50, the lowest in the division.

Enzo Maresca to Juventus?! The truth behind Bianconeri's rumoured interest in Chelsea boss & ex-player revealed as Serie A giants close in on new manager

Juventus are on the lookout for a new manager following Igor Tudor's sacking this week with Luciano Spalletti expected to take over. However, Enzo Maresca, who was on the Juventus books between 2000 and 2004, has been linked with the vacant managerial role in Turin. Chelsea, though, won't sanction his exit at this stage of the season as the Blues look to add to their recent silverware under the Italian.

AFPMaresca has impressed at Chelsea

Maresca was appointed as Blues boss in 2024 as Chelsea turned to the Italian following Mauricio Pochettino's Stamford Bridge exit. The Argentine succeeded Frank Lampard in west London in 2023 yet was relieved of his duties after just 12 months.

The 45-year-old Italian was named Chelsea head coach last year after guiding Leicester back to the Premier League in his debut season in the Midlands. And Maresca enjoyed plenty of success in his first campaign in the capital. He guided Chelsea to the Conference League in May as the Blues battered Real Betis 4-1 in Poland. And they followed up continental success with the Club World Cup over the summer in the U.S. as the capital side eased past Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain.

AdvertisementChelsea boss a Spalletti alternative?

Maresca's performances didn't go unnoticed, either, with the former midfielder a reported target for Juventus. The Old Lady made the decision to sack Tudor on Monday following a 1-0 loss to Lazio, the Croat only taking over in Turin back in March following Thiago Motta's exit. Defeat to the capital side extended their winless run to eight matches, while the Serie A powerhouse had failed to score in the previous four.

Massimo Brambilla, who oversees the club's reserve team, Juventus Next Gen, in Serie C, took interim charge for Juventus' game against Udinese on Wednesday evening. Goals from Dusan Vlahovic, Federico Gatti and Kenan Yildiz confirmed a 3-1 win as Juve got back to winning ways.

Spalletti is expected to take over on a permanent basis sooner rather than later as the Bianconeri look to rescue their season. Spalletti has been out of work since leaving his role as Italy head coach back in June and had previously guided Napoli to the Scudetto in 2023.

AFPNo chance of Maresca leaving Chelsea

However, despite rumours of Juventus pursuing Maresca, the Chelsea boss won't be returning to Italy, at least according to a report in the . "Chelsea have received no approach from Juventus despite previous reports in Italy suggesting Maresca was a candidate after the sacking of Igor Tudor as head coach on Monday," the report on Wednesday started.

"Nor would the Blues have welcomed one as they have no interest in a mid-season managerial change, feeling such a significant shift does more bad than good. Luciano Spalletti is expected to become the new Juve boss instead."

And Spalletti added fuel to the fire on Tuesday as he praised Juventus, saying: "Juventus are a great club with a great history. Everyone would gladly coach Juventus."

'If you want to be up there you need the consistency'

Chelsea will hope that talk of Maresca taking over at Juventus won't derail the club as they look to add further silverware to the trophy cabinet in his second season at Stamford Bridge. Maresca could only watch on as the Blues fell to a 2-1 loss to Sunderland on Saturday afternoon, a result that ended the Blues' four-game winning run.

And after the defeat to the Black Cats, Maresca admitted that the club need to be more consistent if they are to challenge for top honours. "If you want to be up there you need the consistency," Maresca started.

"We won four in a row and yesterday we could have shown that, but because we lost points we didn’t show that. If we can have that level and this level, probably it is better to have something in between, to be consistent always in the same way, rather than like this. But I think overall, since we started, we have performed much better compared to Saturday’s game.

"Before this game we had exactly the same points as last year after eight games, but we dropped points yesterday. But we are still in October, we need to improve many things, and see where we are in March, April, May."

"Talented" £17m England international "open" to signing for Aston Villa

A “talented” England international is now interested in completing a move to Aston Villa, should the Villans like the idea of bringing him in.

McGinn happy after "important" Aston Villa win

Unai Emery’s side got back to winning ways on Thursday evening, winning 1-0 at home to Bologna in the Europa League, courtesy of John McGinn’s strike.

Speaking after the game, the Scot was in positive spirits, as Villa look to build on the victory heading into Sunday’s Premier League clash with Fulham at Villa Park.

“It was important. We got a bit nervy towards the end. They play mental football, man-to-man, and it reminds me of (Marcelo) Bielsa when he was at Leeds. It’s tough and you need to be concentrating because they leave a few players up. You need to be clean going forward with the ball and I don’t think we were.

“I thought we were a little bit rusty going forward, but we created chances and we could have won by more. I thought we played better in the first half than the second, but the important thing was to get the win with a very important clean sheet with a good save from Marco at the end.”

New signings could be needed in January, or at least next summer, in order for Villa to keep improving, and they have now been linked with a move for a 10-cap England international.

England international "open" to Aston Villa move

Speaking to Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown claimed that Ruben Loftus-Cheek is “open” to joining Aston Villa from AC Milan, although no approach has been made for him.

“He’s always showed a lot of promise and at his best he can be excellent, but for me he’s never quite hit the levels people expected of him, even though he’s clearly got a lot of talent. Since his move to AC Milan, he’s done well, and Tuchel obviously sees something in him.

“The qualities he’s got could be an asset to a lot of sides, there’s no doubting that, it’s just about whether he’s going to perform consistently enough. There’s been some talk of a move to Aston Villa, but I’m not sure he’s the player they need right now, he might be better off somewhere else.

“I think it’s something he’s open to, he wants to come back to the Premier League, to compete and potentially put himself in the [England] manager’s thinking. I’m sure if Aston Villa came calling, it’s a move he’d like to make, but I am doubtful about whether they’d push for that one at the moment.”

Loftus-Cheek, thoguht to be valued at £17m, could be a shrewd signing by Villa, having been hailed as a “talented” player by Owen Hargreaves in the past, especially if he has the hunger to win his place back in the England squad before next summer’s World Cup.

At 29, he is still young enough to enjoy three or four good years at Villa Park, and his pace and power in midfield areas could be a weapon for Emery, also adding depth in the middle of the park.
