Everton flop "failed a succession of managers", now he's saving Moyes

Everton have enjoyed a solid start to the campaign. Negativity has wended its way in over recent weeks – and understandably so – but few expect the 14th-place Premier League side to slump into the drop zone and remain there.

Of course, neither are David Moyes’ team firing on all cylinders, and after a hard-fought draw at high-flying Sunderland on Monday evening, the issues relating to goals and strikers remained at the forefront.

Perhaps more concerning was the way the Toffees tapered off after the interval, almost knocked out of kilter by Granit Xhaka’s deflected howitzer moments into the second half; the Black Cats were on the hunt for much of the affair thereafter.

Moyes needs to fix these problems and ensure Everton push for an elusive place in the top half. But, in order to do this, he must find solutions to the current problems.

How Moyes can solve Everton's problems

Not to be unduly pragmatic, but the data suggests Everton are headed for a mid-table Premier League finish, settled somewhere on the bottom half of the ladder.

How to dissect the glaring conundrum on Moyes’ desk? Between them, Beto and Thierno Barry have scored one goal in the league this season, and the slew of missed chances are piling up.

Barry will be desperate to break his duck after moving to the Hill Dickinson from Villarreal for a £27m fee in July. A smart deal for a promising attacking talent wrapped up nice and early.

Things need to improve in the final third, with Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish keeping things afloat.

However, Moyes’ job would be a whole lot more unstable were the defenders not playing their part. James Tarkowski has not looked his sharpest so far this term, though Jordan Pickford is as important as ever. An issue down the defensive flanks is as noisy a talking point as the one at number nine.

With Jarrad Branthwaite yet to make his seasonal bow as he recovers from a hamstring injury, the Blues’ secure defence could have crumbled over the past few months, but there’s been an unlikely hero who is keeping Everton away from the maw of the relegation zone.

The Everton flop saving Moyes' skin

Toward the end of the 2024/25 campaign, it looked nailed on that Michael Keane would close the door on his Everton career, drawing to a close a career on Merseyside with many ups and downs.

Keane, 32, penned a new deal at the start of the summer, and that’s a move which has proved incredibly shrewd, for he has started all ten Premier League fixtures so far as Branthwaite recovers.

Once said to have “failed a succession of managers” at Goodison Park by writer Jim Keoghan, Keane looks as sharp and cultured as he ever has, really making a positive impression as the protective tissue in front of Pickford’s goal. Against Sunderland, for example, Liverpool World handed him a 9/10 match rating for his defensive contribution.

Looking at how Keane has fared alongside Tarkowski, you might argue he has been the superior man. Certainly, he has been less error-strewn in his efforts than the vice-captain.

The significance of Keane’s fine form in the rearguard cannot be understated. Branthwaite is indeed sidelined and may yet be uncleared for several months.

Imagine a world in which the Friedkin Group had opted against renewing Keane’s deal, content with the options at hand. It would have been disastrous and to the detriment of Moyes’ first full season back in charge.

Just look at the England international’s display at the Stadium of Light. His fearlessness to make one near-the-line clearance showcased his determination and spirit, and he has been a credit to Moyes’ team this year.

Issues persist at right-back, and while he’s imperfect in the role, Jake O’Brien has proved largely effective in an unnatural berth. Recalling him to central defence alongside Tarkowski might have had an adverse effect on the squad’s fluency, not least because of the lack of options in the position.

Would it be too much to claim Keane has been the signing of the summer for the Toffees? Perhaps not, considering the circumstances. His steely displays in front of Pickford’s goal might even be keeping Moyes in a job as he looks to find a successful formula to stave off any worries of yet another relegation-threatened campaign.

Em Arlott leads Bears' takedown of The Blaze

Warwickshire handed The Blaze their first defeat of the Women’s Vitality Blast campaign, by 25 runs, in a clash of two of the competition’s front-runners at Edgbaston.Warwickshire’s total of 172 for 6 was built upon strong contributions from their top three with Sterre Kalis hitting 54 (41 balls), Meg Austin 39 (30) and Davina Perrin 25 (18). Thereafter runs came less freely as Kathryn Bryce dismissed those three on the way to an excellent 4 for 21.The Blaze replied with a scrappy 147 for 8. Tammy Beaumont hit 44 off 29 but the rest of the powerful batting line-up misfired against the home side’s excellent and varied attack led by the pace of Em Arlott, with 3 for 33 and the spin of Millie Taylor (2 for 23).Warwickshire chose to bat and were given a strong foundation by openers Austin and Perrin who added 59 in 40 balls. Both then fell to the Bryce sisters – stumped by Sarah off Kathryn. In each case it was excellent glovework by the wicketkeeper as Perrin was lured down the pitch and Bryce (S) did well to take a ball that bounced, and then Austin missed an attempted cut and lifted her back foot just momentarily but long enough for Bryce to pounce.Kalis added another polished half-century to the one she lodged for Netherlands against USA in Utrecht eight days ago but the rest came and went fleetingly.Laura Harris tried to slog-sweep from outside off stump and skied Kirstie Gordon to midwicket. Pavely, Warwickshire’s match-winner two days earlier, lifted Grace Ballinger to long-on.Kathryn Bryce returned to have Kalis caught at mid-off and Nat Wraith pouched at extra cover as Warwickshire came in with a decent but by no means daunting total on a good batting pitch. The Blaze soon lost former Warwickshire batter, Marie Kelly, who pulled Issy Wong to deep square. Beaumont, who hit seven fours and a six, and Kathyn Bryce added 49 from 48 balls but then fell in successive overs, caught in the deep off Taylor and Georgia Davis respectively. When Heather Graham chipped Hannah Baker to midwicket, three wickets had fallen for 12 runs in 18 balls and the required rate had climbed above ten per over.As the equation came down to 64 from the last five overs, the Blaze needed a huge over but it never came. Georgia Elwiss sought six over midwicket off England pace bowler Arlott but was well-caught by Perrin just inside the rope. Ella Claridge lifted Taylor straight and Perrin was under that one too as Warwickshire’s diverse and disciplined attack extinguished the Blaze chase.

Patidar: 'Virat Kohli deserves it more than anyone else'

Rajat Patidar: It is really special for me, special for Virat Kohli and all the fans who have supported us for years. So I think they all deserve it. After Qualifier 1, we thought we could do this. I think 190 was a good score on this track because it was a bit slow. The way our bowlers executed their plans, that was tremendous to watch.[On Krunal Pandya] Of course, he is a wicket-taking bowler. Whenever I come under pressure, I check where KP is. I had a lot of belief in him.Related

  • Kohli and RCB are finally IPL champions

Suyash [Sharma] also bowled really well throughout the season and all the bowlers, fast bowlers, Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar Kumar], Yash [Dayal], [Josh] Hazlewood. And the way Romario [Shepherd] came in and the way he gave two-three overs and that breakthrough [Shreyas Iyer’s wicket], I think that was really special. It’s a great opportunity for me to captain him [Virat Kohli] and it was a great learning for me. And as I said, I think he deserves it more than anyone else – Virat Kohli and all the fans. And after that, I think everyone who has supported, everyone, the management, the support staff, the coaching staff. I think the way they have supported every player, I think that was beautiful.Krunal Pandya, Player of the Match: When we batted in the first innings, I had a discussion with the batters and realised that the slower you bowl, the better it is, and it is difficult [for batters to hit]. In this format, as a bowler, you need guts to do that because the margin of error becomes very minimal. I just backed myself and thought that if I could vary my pace and keep it more on the slower side, I would create chances, rather than just firing it in.

What has been my biggest strength is learning what the situation required. I have always backed my gut and instinct, and today also, I realised that if I was able to take a couple of wickets in the middle – I had to be slightly brave, then the game would be in our hands. I just thought that if I could bowl slow, I would be able to get a couple of wickets. And I am glad that happened. If you had bowled quick on that surface, it would have been good [for] batters. But if you kept varying your pace, there was some help. In the second innings, it slightly got better to bat compared to the first innings. When I joined RCB, I told them that I love winning trophies. After three-and-a-half months, glad that I was able to fulfil what I said on day one – I literally manifested.[On his fourth IPL trophy] It’s been pretty good, right? I mean, ten years, four IPL trophies. I told Hardik [Pandya] also on the phone that in the Pandya household, there would be nine trophies in 11 years.Phil Salt: It’s an unbelievable feeling right now. Honestly, I don’t quite know where I am at the minute. I’ve not had the most sleep, but so proud of the boys. Everywhere we go, we are the best-supported team. It’s ridiculous, the fanbase. And we’ve got AB [de Villiers] here, we’ve got Chris [Gayle] here. Everyone has come back. If you play for them, you love the franchise. If you support them, you love them, and we’re so grateful for that. Thanks for supporting us, thanks for coming out in numbers. Early on in the comp, there were a few games where we were behind the eight ball, and we sort of rode the crowd, so you have won more games than you think this IPL for us.

Jitesh Sharma: I can’t express anything right now. I’m very happy for Virat as he has been waiting for this for 18 years. As a human, I can understand that when a man waits for a trophy for 18 years, how he feels. I’ve said this before that when you play for others, you do something extraordinary. When you play for yourself, you’re conservative. You feel insecure. But when you want to do something for someone else, it’s magical.Josh Hazlewood: I think 190 was a very good score. I think the wicket was a little bit up and down. It may have got better as the night went on, but I think our guys fought it out with the bat really well to post that score. Everyone chipped in and the bowlers held their nerves.[On Kohli winning it after 18 years with RCB] Yeah, it probably means everything. A few of us come and go to other franchises, but to be there from the start and just slug it out for 18 seasons and to get the result tonight, I think we’ll see a bit of emotion.[On returning for the playoffs before the WTC final] You only get better playing in situations like this, gaining that experience. It only adds sort of strings to your bow, so I’m very happy I came back, feel a part of this franchise I’ve been at for a number of years, and yeah, it’s awesome.Dinesh Karthik: It’s a team that waited 18 years, played a lot of good cricket, had to wait its time. It belongs to every fan. Virat Kohli, he has been around for 18 years. Greats like AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, they all tried their hearts out. Support staff like Basu Shanker, [Ramesh] Mane – all these guys have waited 18 years, so I’m very happy for them.

Right from the start, we believed we were a team that was good. We had a lot of bases covered. If we played the way we wanted to, I knew things would work in our favour. Great to see the boys stand up at different points of time. Even today, it was a high-pressure game; they [PBKS] really pushed us – it was not an easy wicket to bat on. But I think we put up a score that was above par. There was a bit in the pitch. But this game, the final, it’s not about the pitch. It’s about the emotion, it’s about how much you have in your tank and the fire to win, and I think we had that a lot today.Andy Flower put us through the rigour, really pushed us to become good support staff. I have become a better batting coach than when I started, obviously it’s my first time… the way he groomed me, helped me… Mo Bobat had a plan and a vision from the start. That’s the culmination of the efforts.Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Of course, we knew it [the pitch] was not easy. So we thought 180 would be a good score to defend and we got 190. So it was ten more than what we thought. The way we executed our plans says a lot about the bowling unit. I think his [Krunal Pandya’s] spell changed the scenario for us, the way he bowled in the middle overs. But yes, the change of pace wasn’t easy, but we talked about it, that we’re not going to overuse it. We’ll use our other options and then use a slower option.Mayank Agarwal [On coming in as a replacement]: Life is very, very unpredictable. If we can stay put, keep grinding, it can turn and it can turn 360 [180 degrees].

Laudrup said "untouchable" Rangers star was "one of the best" in the world

Glasgow Rangers legend Brian Laudrup has called a former Gers teammate “one of the best players in the world”, making it clear how highly he thought of him during their time together at Ibrox.

Laudrup a true great at Rangers

Laudrup is still remembered with great affection by Gers supporters, with the Dane arguably one of the most talented foreign players to ever represent the club.

The midfielder was often a joy to watch during a great period at Ibrox in the 1990s, with the former Denmark international spending four years with Rangers between 1994 and 1998, endearing himself to the fans.

Laudrup scored 45 goals in 151 appearances for the Scottish Premiership giants, with his technical ability almost unrivalled in the Scottish games at the time, and he actually admitted he’d love to play for the Gers team that won the title under Steven Gerrard back in 2021.

“I would have loved to play in that team. The style of play they have nowadays is fantastic to watch. It’s all about ball possession, that’s not to say my Rangers team were a long ball team far from it actually, but now it’s all about possession. Our team in 97 had a lot of top class footballers, as they have in this team now, but it’s perhaps a more assembled team with younger players.”

Laudrup had some great times during his spell as a Rangers player, including the small matter of winning three Scottish league titles and winning the Player of the Year award twice, and he has also played alongside some wonderful footballers.

Laudrup lauds former Rangers teammate

Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine in the past [via Give Me Sport], Laudrup heaped praise on the brilliance of Paul Gascoigne as a teammate at Rangers, calling him one of the best footballers on the planet.

“I played with him at Rangers and in his prime he was one of the best players in the world. He glided with the ball in a way that made him virtually untouchable for opponents and he was a match-winner, who had great technique when striking the ball. He was also a great entertainer – on and off the pitch! A tremendous natural talent.”

Gascoigne’s life after football has been well-documented, with lots of personal issues sadly affecting him, but it should never be forgotten what a great player he was at his peak.

The former England star was the complete midfielder in many ways, combining skill, power, intelligence and leadership, and the manner in which his personality rubbed off on those around him is almost unrivalled.

Laudrup and Gascoigne enjoyed so many special times together, linking with each other superbly on the pitch, and you wonder what Russell Martin would do to them both in his current squad in their prime.

Harry Kane offers fitness update after suffering injury scare and limping out of Bayern Munich's win over Eintracht Frankfurt

Harry Kane provided an update on his condition after suffering an injury scare during Bayern Munich's 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday. Kane, who scripted yet more Bayern history with a goal, had to be subbed off towards the end of the game after he picked up an ankle injury. The knock certainly left the English fans sweating as he is scheduled to link up with the national team.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Kane said: "I'm okay. It was a contact to the bone. I had it a few weeks ago, and it was in the same spot today. A few days and it'll be fine."

When asked if he would join the England team on Monday, the Three Lions star added: "Yes I'll be there Monday."

  • Kane created more Bundesliga history

The prolific star scored the second goal for his side just three minutes before the half-hour mark with a brilliant strike. In the process, he became the first player in history to score 11 goals in his six league appearances in a season. Former Liverpool star Luis Diaz also had a fabulous outing as he contributed with a brace.

Relief for Tuchel ahead of World Cup qualifier

Thomas Tuchel will breathe a sigh of relief after Kane's statement as he needs his captain to be in his best shape ahead of England facing Wales in a friendly match on October 9, before taking on Latvia in a World Cup qualifier five days later.

After Pino: Crystal Palace now in advanced talks to sign "intelligent" star

Despite already signing Yeremy Pino from Villarreal, Crystal Palace are now reportedly in advanced talks to sign another attacking reinforcement for Oliver Glasner.

Pino realises Premier League "dream"

Following the departure of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal, Crystal Palace swiftly swooped in to welcome Pino from Villarreal. Securing the talented winger in a deal worth around £21m, the Eagles will be desperately hoping that he has what it takes to fill Eze’s boots and become an instant hit among the fans at Selhurst Park.

After putting pen to paper, the 22-year-old quickly admitted that it’s a “dream” come true to be joining a Premier League side – telling the club’s official website: “Of course this motivates me. In the end, you have to continue the path the team has taken by coming here, winning titles, and my goal is to be in Europe.

“It’s very important for the club, for me as well. Doing well in Europe is a goal of mine, but also [to contribute] lots of goals, lots of assists, and for the team to be happy with me. A dream for me is to come to the Premier League at this historic club, being able to help the team with my game and my experience.”

Chairman Steve Parish also welcomed the new Crystal Palace star, saying: “It’s fantastic news that Yeremy – an exciting young talent, with already such an impressive record in domestic, European and international football – has chosen us as the next step in his career.”

After securing Pino’s signature, however, Palace are not done there. Reports are now suggesting that they’ve stepped up their pursuit to sign a talented Bundesliga star before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Crystal Palace in advanced talks to sign Baumgartner

According to Sacha Tavolieri, Crystal Palace are now in advanced talks to sign Christoph Baumgartner from RB Leipzig this week. The Austrian reportedly wants to complete the move and the Eagles are negotiating a loan deal with an option to buy the attacking midfielder at the end of the season.

At 26 years old, Baumgartner is a player who has featured at the very top of European football and would instantly offer Glasner some much-needed experience. After starting 18 out of 34 Bundesliga games last season, meanwhile, it’s a move that the midfielder himself arguably needs if he wants a permanent starting place.

That said, inconsistent game time hasn’t stood in the way of praise for the Leipzig man. Former Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl previously told reporters after signing the midfielder: “Christoph is quick, possesses a threat on goal and is a very intelligent player.

RB Leipzig's Christoph Baumgartner in action with Celtic's DaizenMaeda

“He can play with both feet and has an incredible shot. His skills and abilities lend another aspect to our game. Baumi is also a good guy: down-to-earth, eager to learn and ambitious.”

Arsenal in talks to offload "sensational talent" after last 48 hour meeting

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta may not be happy with Andrea Berta’s transfer talks to offload a “sensational talent”, with the Gunners believed to be locked in exit discussions after a meeting in the last 48 hours.

Fresh off a solid start to their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win over Man United at Old Trafford, Arteta could still see a host of deals conducted at the Emirates Stadium ahead of deadline day on September 1.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetaduring a lap of appreciation after the match

Unfortunately for the supporters who wanted to see Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze link up with Arteta, that dream appears to be on the verge of collapsing.

Tottenham have verbally agreed a deal for Eze after Arsenal’s reported hesitation to move for the England international, with the club apparently deciding not to move, partly due to their desire for Ethan Nwaneri to get more minutes this season (talkSPORT).

Meanwhile, it is now believed that winger Leandro Trossard is on the verge of signing a brand-new deal at Arsenal, following previous reports that Berta could move for another left-winger if the Belgian leaves.

Given he is set for a salary increase, but the actual length of his deal hasn’t changed, it is unclear exactly what Arsenal’s plans are for the long-term when it comes to bringing in an eventual replacement for the 30-year-old.

However, in the meantime, Arsenal’s focus could be purely focused on outgoing transfers.

Fabio Vieira, Karl Hein, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Reiss Nelson, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior have all been linked with moves away from N5 in the last few weeks.

Stuttgart remain in lengthy talks for Vieira, which now centre around the possibility of a loan deal that includes an obligation to buy for £17 million, dependent on certain conditions.

Zinchenko has attracted interest from Italy and Turkey, with some reports suggesting that the Ukraine international has already discussed a move to Fenerbache with José Mourinho (Sabah).

Arsenal in talks to offload with FC Porto to offload Jakub Kiwior

According to GiveMeSport, following a meeting on Monday with FC Porto, Arsenal are also locked in talks over letting Jakub Kiwior depart for the Primeira Liga on loan.

The Poland international deputised brilliantly for the injured Gabriel at the back end of 2024/2025, impressing with some solid performances, but Kiwior is firmly a squad player under Arteta.

GMS report that Porto are pushing to sign Kiwior on a temporary deal, including an obligation to buy for 2026, with the major obstacle in negotiations believed to be the 25-year-old’s wages.

Francesco Farioli’s side want Arsenal to cover the majority of his salary before agreeing a move. It is interesting to note that, given just how highly Arteta rates the player, the Spaniard may not be keen to lose a reliable member of his squad.

Kiwior has also been called a “sensational talent” during his time in N5, but Portugal could now be beckoning.

Wayne Rooney reveals unlikely bromance with Germany & Bayern Munich legend Bastian Schweinsteiger as he admits being surprised by midfielder at Man Utd

Wayne Rooney has lifted the lid on his unlikely bromance with former Manchester United team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger. The two played alongside one another at Old Trafford for two years and to this day they remain good friends but the German's character surprised the ex-England international.

  • Rooney taken aback by Schweinsteiger's manner

When Germany and Bayern Munich star Schweinsteiger swapped the Bundesliga for Premier League giants United in 2015, Rooney was expecting the midfielder to fit the German stereotype of an "efficient" player. Instead, the forward was pleasantly surprised to learn that his new team-mate was quite the "prankster".

  • AFP

    What Rooney said

In the latest episode of the 'Wayne Rooney Show', he said: "Thierry Henry made a comment. Bastian Schweinsteiger won't leave me alone. He keeps just following me everywhere. So the comment was that, it was like T-Bag (Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell) and his guy [from Prison Break] with him. Basty’s brilliant. He's so much fun and he's come out with his dad. His dad's a good character as well. I've said to him all the time, when he signed for Man United, I thought, we sign this really efficient German, he's gonna come in and, you know, really organised and that, and he comes in and he’s like the biggest joker prankster I've seen. And then with Bastian, even when he was at United, me and him end up on FaceTime to Thomas Muller. He was on FaceTime this morning, Thomas Muller, who is out in Vancouver at the minute. And I'm like, I think I've been kidded all these years that these Germans are very efficient. They’re just big pranksters! Even Bastian's dad, who, I think, he said was 72, but he was all great fun."

  • Rooney and Schweinsteiger are two of the greats

The two players will go down as some of the best players of their generation. Rooney was one of England's best-ever forwards, and Schweinsteiger had a hugely successful career, both for Bayern but also in winning the 2014 World Cup with Germany. Despite having quite different backgrounds, these two showed that friendships can blossom from just about anywhere.

Rooney and Schweinsteiger's plans for the future

In another anecdote about spending time in South Korea with former United team-mate Ji-sung Park, Rooney said he and Schweinsteiger planned to go to the famous German festival, Oktoberfest, one day.

He added: "Ji-sung Park again took us out for some Korean food for lunch and to try on some Korean school uniforms, which was quite strange. It was cringy. And do you know what I think, just for Ji-sung Park, we've all done it. Because we love him that much. We all said, okay, we'll just do it. And we all knew how cringy and how bad it looked. I didn't put the trousers on it. I said I'll put the shirt and the jacket, and the tie on. It's been great. And we went to one of the famous towers here. And like you have in Paris, where you have the lock, where you write the message and make a wish? It was like one of them. And so me and Schweinsteiger done a message each on either side of the lock, so mine was, 'Basty, can you please take me to Oktoberfest?' He said, 'Yes, I will but you have to wear the outfit'. We’re gonna try and organise it."

No water, no roof – fans reel from the heat in Pune

No access to drinking water for spectators at the MCA Stadium on a hot and humid day in Pune led to chaos and complaints of sickness among the fans who came to watch the first day of the second Test between India and New Zealand.During the lunch break, hundreds of spectators queued up near the North Stand for water, which was unavailable at the time. Police intervention was needed to manage that crowd. Around 20 people complained of dehydration and giddiness and needed attention at the first-aid kiosk at the North Stand. With temperatures over 30 degrees celsius, a member of the staff at that kiosk suggested that there were more cases of dehydration in other stands. The MCA stadium, located in the outskirts of Pune near the expressway to Mumbai, has a capacity of 37,000, and almost 18,000 spectators turned up for the third Test match at the venue and first since 2019. More than half of those spectators had to brave the heat and humidity as only six stands at the MCA stadium have a roof. The MCA had promised free water during this game, but amid the chaos, a number of fans ended up buying water from vendors at high prices. One fan said he had spent more on water bottles than his ticket for the entire Test match.Once water was made available to the spectators the MCA secretary Kamlesh Pisal apologised to the fans and said that more water booths would be set up across the stands from Friday.”We can only apologise to the fans for inconvenience caused,” Pisal told reporters. “But we want to assure them, through MCA, that this won’t be repeated, and everything will be taken care of.”Considering the scorching heat, we had decided to provide cold water. In our previous experience, the fans had complained about us providing warm water or boiling water. We, as management, thought we would provide them with cold water, so we had kept cool cages. Once the water in cool cages finished, we tried to refill it with the same cold water, and in that process, it got delayed. We have done a recce of the entire water in stands and will make sure everything is refilled properly tonight to avoid such situations.”
